Five Minute Histories: Ethel Ennis' Jazz Club

Ethel Ennis is often called the First Lady of Jazz here in her hometown of Baltimore. In today’s Five Minute Histories video, discover how during her illustrious music career Ennis worked to give back to her city through free concerts and her unique jazz club, Ethel’s Place. To help us tell Ethel’s life story, we are delighted to have two special guests for this video-Dr. Raynetta Wiggins-Jackson and Earl Arnett, Ethel’s husband. Dr. Wiggins-Jackson curated the fabulous exhibition, “Ethel’s Place,” currently on view at the Peabody Library until April 14 (go check it out!). Thanks for watching and see you next week with another Five Minute Histories video.

This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and KZread channel.

It was wonderful to see Earl. I have seen him in over 25 years. My parents were friends of theirs. In the prelude, one person who was overlooked was Andre Watts, who trained at Peabody, and who was likely the first person of color to perform at the Lyric Opera House when he gave his graduation performance.

Great story, however since you are a historian please don't conflate rap & R&B. Dru Hill are not rappers. They are R&B singers
