Five(ish) Minute Dance Lesson: Merengue, Level 1

Have you ever wanted to take a Latin Dance class but didn’t have enough time? In this podcast, Latin Dance instructors Ricardo Loaiza and Elba Garcia prep you to dance the night away! Once you’ve practiced all three dances, find a local Latin Dance club or bust these moves at the next school dance! Wepa!
Ricardo and Elba are going to show you how, with just a few simple moves, you can impress on the floor in no time. The Merengue is the official dance of the Dominican Republic. Remember that when you’re dancing the Merengue, your feet don’t leave the floor.

Best dance lesson video I've seen in a long time. Ricardo is not only funny, he explains the origins of the music. Together they teach effectively. And the animations are awesome.

2:31 mark - this is known as making a set of railroad tracks - feet and legs are slightly offset to prevent knee incursions with each other, because since I had danced merengue before, your knees are precious little items! You can also use knee protection, such as knee caps, as needed.

The (first Merengue); as we know it today; was recorded by "El Maestro Luis Kalaff Perez". He was born in Pimentel, Provincia Duarte, Republica Dominicana. El Maestro Kalaff died in 2010. NOTE: My neighbor. Had nothing to do with "slaves". That is not how Merengue is danced. If you want to know anything about Merengue; ask a Dominican; and make sure he/she is certified from "El Cibao". Better yet!!! Ask a (Pimentelense).

Basically, that is why most merengue DJs will likely do a mixture of merengue styles - techno-merengue (like "Izquierda derecha" of La Factoria de Sabor), classic merengue (like "Bibillurrina" of Juan Luis Guerra), and High-NRG merengue (like "Latinos" of Proyecto Uno), as well as meren-raps (merengues with rapping, like "Tiburon" of Proyecto Uno, or "El Jardinero" of Wilfrido Vargas). Cumbia-merengues are also probable (for example, "A Mover La Colita" from La Dinamita Sonora - which is actually based on the classic merengue done by Wilfrido Vargas!!!). This is because a merengue DJ wants to please almost everyone who likes only one or a few styles of merengue.
