About FIU Latin Jazz Ensemble
Voted ‘BEST LATIN ACT’ in 2020, Miami New Times
The FIU Latin Jazz Ensemble is the only large ensemble within the Division of Jazz Studies dedicated to Latin American and Contemporary Jazz exclusively.
The group was founded by the late great pianist, composer and professor Michael Orta. The ensemble is now lead by Jazz drum-set instructor and Music Business professor Rodolfo Zuniga who is honored to continue professor Orta’s vision for this group. The FIU School of Music's Latin Jazz Ensemble is an electrifying group that features many of the jazz program's most gifted students. They perform a wide-ranging repertoire that explores the fusion of Latin and American Jazz styles. Always keeping ahead of current trends in the idiom, they perform numerous works from contemporary arrangers, as well as original compositions.
The students perform at FIU, jazz festivals, and clubs. At FIU, they have been studied with many world-renowned guest clinicians and soloists such as Adam Nussbaum, Ingrid Jensen, Jim Snidero, Paquito D’Rivera, Johnathan Blake, Marco Marcinko, John Fedchock, Randy Brecker, and more.
