Bay windows are normally curved or a series of straight sections creating what's known as box bays, closed bays, angled bays or splay bays.
All types of window blinds with the exception of vertical blinds need a flat fixing surface, so cannot be used for curved bay windows.
Metal venetian blinds are a very versatile type of window blind as this style of blind stacks tightly at the top of the window when it is open, but then it can be lowered to any position, with the adjustable horizontal aluminium slats of the blind offering finite control over the level of light and the degree of privacy required.
VENETIAN BLIND COLOURS
Venetian blinds make a perfect choice for a contemporary interior. The chic minimal look offers sophisticated elegance to a room, especially in the modern metallic finishes. Metal and glass furniture and light fittings are still very much on trend and including a window treatment in the same metallic finishes will ensure that the decor flows.
A venetian blind colour palette is immense, ranging from the brightest primaries, creating a highly visual statement, especially in a high gloss finish, brightening the dullest of decors. Kitchens, children’s bedrooms and playrooms are full on action rooms that can take the impact of the reds, oranges and yellow blinds, whereas for bedrooms and bathrooms, the brightly coloured blues, greens and turquoises will still make a bold statement, but with soothing undertones.
At the other end of the spectrum there are the softest of neutrals and naturals that will offer the wide range of benefits from this style of window treatment, whilst giving a low impact finish. This gentle approach is ideal for a modern bedroom that wishes to give emphasis to a romantic look.
Metal venetian blinds are also available in a range of very realistic wood finishes. The natural beauty of the wood grains has been skilfully applied to the wood effect finish, so the blind offers a cohesive window finish for rooms with wooden flooring or wooden furniture. This looks particularly attractive in a small kitchen if the wood effect finish of the blind matches the wooden kitchen units.
BENEFITS OF VENETIAN BLINDS
The horizontal slats of the blind can be angled to any position which will allow for as much or as little control over the light, privacy and temperature in the room.
The aluminium blades and paint finishes of the blind will not be affected by a steamy atmosphere in a bathroom and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth if they get greasy in a kitchen.
Fitting any style of blind, but particularly vertical or venetian blinds will help to protect your furniture, carpets or wooden flooring from the harmful rays of the sun. They are also very efficient for reducing glare in a room that may affect the viewing of TV screens or computer monitors.
A venetian blind, whether metal or real wood will add an extra level of interest to a modern minimal decor as the play of light passing over the slats of the blind will create interesting shadows on the walls and floor of the room.
MEASURING FOR VENETIAN BLINDS

2. When you are measuring for a bay window, you will need to check that there are not any installations such as phone sockets or fittings such as tiles or dado rails that may hinder the working of the blind, or that need to be taken into consideration when you are measuring for the blinds.
3. If your window has large handles or air vents, you will have to fit the blinds (top fix blinds) to the ceiling of the bay window. Venetian blinds can also be fitted to the wall (face fix) blinds.

To ensure that your venetian blinds fit perfectly into your bay window, you will invariably need to make 2 cardboard templates to represent the depth of the venetian blind headrails as well as the depth of any obstructions in the window. These templates should then be placed either side of each angle of the bay with the tips touching. The point where the tip touch is the position to start to measure the sizes of the venetian blinds you will need to order.
