If you squared the short points to the outside of the lay board and used that as the long points of the angles wouldn't that do away with having to measure as you have effectively already marked off the same points?

Yes it would, as you've effectively used the lay board as a 'rod' and transfered the rafter points onto it. Whether it's quicker or not, I don't know🤔

You wouldn't need to measure and use the offcuts to mark thickness and still need to bevel the angles,am not trying to pick work to pieces and only have limited experience with this kind of work , big fan of your channel too Del , asking questions is a good way to learn I'm not trying to be critical

Love these vids. I normally do as you do - use the layerboard material as a rod - mark the longest points and measure on the material itself longest point to longest point and just reproduce it. I'd like to know - as suggested above - whether squaring across from marking the longest points and then marking the angles again would work. Pretty sure I've flipped the layerboard/rod before so that the marked longest points are on the top edge of the layerboard material, then marked the angles...and it came up short?? There'll always be a discrepancy because the top of the layerboard, where it meets the ridge, will need to be slightly shorter because of the thickness of the layerboard material (whether 2x or 3/4 ply) and the rod can't account for that. These are the best solutions though: marked in situ; no squares or complicated apps. needed. Carpentry is always best when you can get all your tools in a bucket and a pouch!!!
