In this video I talk about how I am going to fit an electric motor to a Dawes Super Galaxy touring cycle (1992 model) with dropped handlebars.
In this part I review the parts and show the wheel being fitted.
The kit I will be fitting is from easifit easifitebikekit.co.uk/

When I saw mrs scrimpers bike I shuddered when I saw the rat trap pedals . When I was a young bloke ( 14-15 ) I saved up my money week by week until I could afford a pair and the moment came when I took them for a spin ....then my foot slipped off a pedal and it swung round and hit my shin and with a load exclamation of ..ouch! ouch! ouch! I hopped off home and replaced them with my old ones and a plaster for my leg .Thanks for your video looking forward to pt4. Cheers from Australia

Thank Mark. The motor has made all the difference to Susie's cycling, she actually looks forward to going out now but the problem is that I am now the one getting left behind!

Nice job. I enjoy your channel as you are always doing something different and not afraid to take on a new challenge. I started watching when you were building Whirligigs. I might call the manufacturer again and ask him to send along a replacement spoke for the bent one. That bent one would drive me crazy.....

I've had inner tubes explode like that before and in all (my) cases it has been because on inflating the tyre I've not 'settled' the inner tube into the tyre and the inner tube has got piched between the tyre and wheel rim - maybe that is what happend with you?

Thank you for your comment however did you actually watch the video fully? I have been fitting tyres on cycles for over 50 years and know the correct way to fit a tyre. Even if as you suggest it was my fitting that was at fault this happened twice on two different tyres, it's also strange that since the new rim was fitted we have had no further trouble. Furthermore generally speaking if you do happen to trap the tube when fitting it results in what is called a pinch puncture, it does not normally cause the tyre to blow off the rim. If you look at my video you cannot fail to see just how loose the tyres are on that rim compared to the new one we fitted. The rim diameter is too small meaning that it is impossible for the tyre bead to lock behind the hook it sits on the hook and when pressure is introduced the tyre will move outwards and eventually explode out as happened twice with us. I managed to get a fatter Michelin folding tyre on to the rim but leaving it pumped up in the workshop and when I checked two hours later it had already started to move out. From comments received here and on facebook I know of at least 3 cases where this has happened using the same kit as the one we fitted , The suppliers have admitted that the rim is smaller diameter rim that those of other manufacturers and state that you should only inflate to 40PSI which of course is far below the accepted limits for 28c HP tyres which are normally of the order between 65PSI - 95PSI depending on the tyre fitted. even the Kenda tyre supplied states a min of 55PSI. If the rim outer diameter is too small due to a manufacturing defect then the bead seat diameter will also be too small by the same margin - hence the tyres will fly off. As I mention in my video I am happy with the kit apart from the rim that was supplied to us, I added the warning to the video after the incident because I was concerned that another person could have the same issue and they might not be so lucky as my wife who had actually stopped before it exploded, a few seconds earlier she was racing down a hill. As a Cyclist you will surely know that if a front tyre blows then you are on the deck instantly and most probably end up in hospital or worse. It should be pointed out that my issue only covers the 700c 28c wheel that was supplied, others sizes may not be affected.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. First tyre - BANG! High pitched noise in my ears for hours. I was trying to fit a Swchable (sp) Marathon Plus, which are puncture resistant and have used them for years. Kept on popping out from the rim. Spent 2 hours trying to get it in. No luck. Nearly sent the kit back, but tried the cheap tyre it came with and it is working. Will I really have to change the rim, or is there any other solution? Contacted Clive, and he gave me the "correct way" to fit it, but no luck. Any ideas. By the way, I enjoyed the video's, thanks. Like you, I have been cycling for years. I do know how to fit a tyre!

Hi Howie, thanks for the comment and watching my videos. We are not alone, since I made the videos I have heard from quite a few people with the same issue. The thing is this issue is not just an annoyance it is putting riders in danger, As a cyclist you will know that a front wheel blow-out can have serious consequences resulting in very serious injuries or death. I can not for the life of me understand why the makers and sellers of this kit are so blasé about the danger as they could be responsible in the case of litigation. The makers of the rim admit that it is undersized but state that if fitted correctly and only low pressure is used it is safe. The point is that the tyres are called high pressure for a reason and as you will know one expects to use pressures in the region of 70-95 PSI depending on the tyre, Even the Kenda tyre supplied says pump to 75PSI. In my opinion and the opinion of my friend who is a chartered engineer and a wheel builder these rims are a 'ticking time-bomb' It's only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, we were lucky my wife was riding fast downhill when she heard a noise and stopped before it 'blew up' imagine if it had blown on the hill. When you buy a product it is indefensible that you have to replace part of it to make it safe but there is not a chance in hell any of us would ride with one of those rims on the front wheel. With a proper decent rim fitted it is fine. Let me know if you need any more help or advice.

Would be interested to know how long ago you purchased your wheel. If recently, i.e. several months after Scrimper raised the rim-size problem with the supplier, it's concerning that the problem still persists. This kit seems a good solution for a conversion I need to do for someone, but not if the 700c wheels are still being supplied with undersized rims.

@@HatFog I know that you aimed your question to Howie but I hope you will excuse me commenting. Looking at the pictures of the kits I imagine they are the same undersized rims . Probably best to ask the suppliers but I imagine they will say there is no problem with the rims. I have to say that once a decent rim is fitted the kit works well, even if you factor in the cost of a decent rim it still works out to be a good buy. Obviously it's not satisfactory, when you buy something it has to be fit for purpose and of reasonable quality, if others are riding the same rim as supplied (using the correct tyre pressures for the tyre supplied ) it's only a matter of time (IMHO) that someone will have an accident when a tyre blows off. My comments apply to the 700c rims, other sizes may well be fine?

@@scrimperuk Thanks for that. An Easi-Fit website question from January 2022 was: "looking at the wheel and seen a KZread ref the rims being to small (scrimper UK KZread channel) for the tyres and the tyres bursting, Is this issue fixed now??". The supplier's reply stated: "Yes the wheel rims are fine just make sure before you inflate your tyre that the inner tube is not trapped between the tyre and the rim and that the tyres beads is seated correctly in the rim". So still kind of implying the issue is/was one of poor tyre-fitting rather than the rim-undersizing you and several others suffered - and not even recognising that there may have been a production problem which had now, one would hope, been rectified. Getting the wheel rebuilt with a proper-sized rim would be a pain and unwelcome additional cost. I can build wheels, but the bike it's needed for has cantilever brakes, so the pad-to-rim gap is small and the wheel has to be dead true to avoid brake-rub, meaning it would take me a long time to get it all transferred, trued, round, balanced and stress-relieved properly. Not to mention the hassle of ensuring the new rim has the same ERD as the undersized rim, so that the same spokes can be used, or of figuring out new spoke lengths. I wonder if the other branded versions of the kit have the same undersized rims - some more research needed I fear..... In any case, thanks for a great series of videos on the product and its installation and troubles - really useful! I hope your wife continues to enjoy ebiking with it, and that it remains trouble-free for years to come.

Thanks for your kind comments about my videos. It sounds to me that the issue of undersized rims has not been addressed. When the tyre exploded on our wheel I spoke to the suppliers who suggested that I had not fitted the tyre correctly, I was so angry because I have been doing cycle repairs for over 60 years and knew that it was not down to my error, after all it happened twice to our wheel with two different tyres. I went over to my workshop and made a very stern video showing in detail how that rim was undersized, I sent it to the supplier and because they agreed to pay for us to fit a new rim and a new tyre and tube I did not make that video public. I think you will agree that in my last video I was very measured in my comments about the rim and even after the troubles did not run down the kit. Since I made the video I have heard from quite a few others who have had the same issue so it's not just me. The manufacturers of the rim have even stated that their rim is undersized but is fine if you don't pump it up to the recommended pressure 'stamped' on the tyre, which is wrong, it is possibly as dangerous to ride on an under-inflated tyre as much as the risk of the tyre blowing off these rims if you pump to the correct pressure for a 700c tyre. My friend who is a chartered engineer and an expert wheel builder spent many hours testing these rims with lot's of different tyres of different makes and not one could be fitted tight enough to be safe to ride. My wife was very lucky that day she had just descended a steep hill and stopped after hearing a noise when the tyre blew off and locked the wheel in the forks, has this happened whilst descending the hill she would almost certainly been very seriously injured or even worse. IMHO these rims are a ticking time-bomb, I commented on the rims issue as I would hate anyone else to have an accident and I had not said anything about the problem. One of our club members has just bought a different brand of kit and his wheel came with a quality Mavic rim.
