Well, preferences and state of mind are two different things. But that's not the point..

for the rim brake, extra-thin brake shoes are available. And, yes, I would always test with a "dead" tire from a bike shop prior to switching...

I didn't know about those brake shoes. But how does that help? I actually had to make mine, gasp, extra thick for the caliper to open a bit more. See, testing with an old tire would be smart, that's why I didn't.

Check this out: From my own experience as a Campy R/SR Rim brake user. I switched to Ultegra calipers on my Bianchi Infinito CV (full R/SR build) and was able to go from 28 with lots of brake caliper paint wear to 30mm tires with the Ultegra calipers. Simple fix, campy brake calipers are the issue, not your frame or tires. Borrow a friend's Shimano calipers for an hour just to fit them.

That's a good point as I noticed the tire rubs on the diagonal portion (upper) of the caliper when it's in its regular operating range. The Ultegras may have the upper section of the calipers more horizontal than Campy's. Good advice, thank you. PS, you're assuming I have friends (JK)

That's a nice bike. I'm thinking about trying 28mm on my 25mm Giant Defy.

Thank you. As a friend of ours suggested here, you can always try with an old tire, never forgetting maybe that if it's paper thin almost rubbing somewhere, with the new tire it most def will. Also, tire pressure makes a huge difference in overall tire size.

if a spoke breaks, the ride is over

It is indeed. But you know what, I've never broken a road bike spoke in my life (and I'm not that young). Only once mountain biking. Do you believe it is a relatively common thing?

@makantahi3731 Damn. There's these tools to check spoke tension and see if they're uniform around the wheel. What I like to do is to lightly hit each one of the spokes with a ruler or pen and listen if the sound note is similar. If so, the tension is similar and therefore shouldn't explode while riding.

@@for_the_love_of_bikes yes, exactly, that's an optimistic attitude, the reality is closer to Murphy's Law. I made myself 2 wheels, front and rear with new Alpine S spokes. after 1-2 years, first one spoke on the front wheel broke in the nipple on the thread while driving lightly 100m from home, the next day one spoke on the rear wheel broke. both spokes were replaced with black nameless spokes, since then 8-10 years have passed without a single spoke breaking. you cannot be 100% sure that there will be no problems

@makantahi3731 haha, that's a good story actually. Law of averages indeed. Could it be the spokes needed some time to bed in? I go through that every time I re-tighten a wheel. They take one or two trips to bed in a d only then I can finalize the truing. Well, let's hope your current average of 0 breaks continues. Cheers mate!
