Fitting 285 Tires on a Tacoma TRD Pro

In today's video, I go into detail about how I installed and fit 285/70/R17 BFGoodrich KO2 tires (and Method 703 wheels) on a 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro! There were definitely a few modifications required to get this larger-sized tire to fit without rubbing on the mud flap, front of the fender, and upper control arm, so I talk about what was done to address this.

Data point for others doing 285/70/17s. I've got an OME suspension (2.5" front, 1.5" rear lift, measured from street to wheel well center), C load KO2s: OMETAC16HKSB2. With 17x8 zero-offset rims, it's a perfect fit. No need to replace UCAs or to trim or hammer anything. I can smack it around at full steering lock without any rub. Almost all of the clearance issues I've seen on others' set-ups are from going overboard with a big negative offset. 2021 TRD OR.

I've found this to be the case too-- for fitting larger tires, wheel offset matters more than people may think! The lift matters, but 0 offset helps quite a bit. Thanks for sharing your setup!

How off is your speedometer and odometer with the larger diameter wheels? When I increased the wheel and tire size on my old Nissan truck, the actual speed became off and required recalibration to maintain proper speed and mileage indications. Is this recalibration something you can do with an OBD-II tool or does it need to be sent out to a company?

So have you had any problems on the outer wall of the tire ? I have some toyo open country AT3. 265/70/17 on the trd pro wheels after about 6 months I took the spare down to clean it. And had some major rubbing on the outside wall of the tire from the top of the undercarriage compartment. It was so bad I had to get a new spare. Any recommendations to solve that problem? I’ve tried tighten the spare down as tight as I could but that didn’t seem to do the trick.

1st: disregard my question from the later video which I watched first. 2nd: Did you get an alignment after putting the 285's on? Also, I had my heart set on American Racing 17x8's with zero offset for my '19 TRD O/R knowing I would need new shocks, but I'm guessing those 'Pro' Fox shocks (with the preload collar) will swap in easily... I hope. Not needing UCA's will help with my budget - same reason I won't get those Methods. Great video, as usual!!

I wonder if I put a 275/70/16 on my stock wheels, will they ever rub? A 2020 off road.

As far as I’m aware, the largest you can go without rubbing is 265/75/R16, but depending on your wheel setup, you might be able to get away with it!

Chloe, Can talk about the MPG difference with these wheel/tires compared to the ones you had on,or is it too early yet to tell?

It’s a big difference compared to stock. Around 3-4mpg on interstate with my truck before the regear and custom tune and I set my speed to 68 on the interstate.

I decided on 265/75/16 and a 2 inch front and rear lift kit. That way I can keep my rake. That way when I'm pulling a trailer I don't look stupid
