Fitch's China Outlook Cut Overblown: Ecognosis

Fitch's decision to revise its outlook for China to negative from stable is questionable as much of the nation's debt is domestic, says Ecognosis Advisory CEO Andrew Freris. He discusses the Fitch revision with Haslinda Amin on Bloomberg Markets Asia.

It's the reason why they're able to run such budget deficits, in their case it's even more intense because they use quantitative easing which charges the fed to buy us treasury and lower interest debt which helps the governement finance its deficits through debt. The Chinese stopped doing it al least 20 years ago so the Pboc holds a very small share of chinese bonds. In fact Xi told them to increase it gradually. Long story short, they have the tools to deal with a decrease in revenues from property and local government debt. Some provinces are already banned from using it and the central government issues bonds since last year to help them clear it. + The scale of the debt is according to internal sources less than reported. Fitch is overreacting

@@waltertodd4479 The US economy is running very important deficits compared to others regions of the world especially europe to invest in infrastructure, the inflation reduction act and the chips and science act... Along with various generous programs like child tax credits recently expanded and students debt cancellations. These are funded through debt monetization. The resilience of an economy depends on a lot of factors, energy security, food security, tech self-reliance, and social redistribution. It would be foolish to believe that China is not capable of achieving energy security given their dominance in green tech and green energy, food security given their recent moves allow GMO crops and their developing seed industry and vertical farmlands. Tech self-reliance given the amount of money they are putting on R&D in a wide range of industries not only semiconductors and social redistribution which will be gradual but will certainly be put in a place to offer a real social safety net for their citizens. You may hate it, but they have the financial levers, and increasingly the tech levers to be masters of their own destiny...
