Fissure detecting at the Delaware Mine

The Copperland team locates underground copper-bearing fissures at the old Delaware mine in Michigan's Keweenaw peninsula using methods both old & new: magnetic compass & Fisher Gemini-3 metal detector. - "Three fissures were developed to a considerable extent - the Stoutenberg, Delaware, and (Kelly) Hogan. The Stoutenberg was opened to the eighth level, the Delaware to the ninth level, and the Hogan to the fourth level... " - USGS Professional Paper 144 Butler & Burbank

Thank you for sharing such an interesting piece of info. I recently have been fascinated with the history and geology of the copper country. Been going up every year finding some of the more obscure places to collect and always love seeing new things!

Thanks for commenting Digging Canuck Metal Detecting! The Fisher Gemini-3 is designed to locate deep objects. In fact, it may detect metals or ore bodies as deep as 20 feet, depending on ground mineralization & size of target. Some people use it for cache hunting or relic hunting, or for locating underground pipes & public utilities. We were only interested in locating copper-bearing fissures that played such a big part in the history of Michigan's copper boom.

The Gemini 3 does not discriminate between iron and other metals, but it will detect metallic veins down to 30-50 feet. This detector is designed specifically to find veins.
