i started out buying the little x7 for my hatchet, went to the x17 for my splitter, but felt i needed something a little longer and heavier so went the whole hog and got the gerber equivalent of the x27 (gerber freescape 26 inch being identical to the fiskars x27 but in green and black instead of orange and black). Never looked back, and great for splitting Australian hardwoods...

Yep. Use that X27 and place your logs lower down. Practice your technique dude and don’t slice in to yourself please. Oop nearly

The logs are quite high man, you need to have them much lower for more effective splitting. If it was about 1 foot lower it would make a tremendous difference. Also the second log after the x25 split is much harder because it has knots which is why the x17 struggled.

you don’t need all these great axes. you need practice and skill. I recommend x25 for you to use like forever.

I can gladly say i will never ever ever buy another wooden handle axe ever again, and havent for some years now, the fiskars are just too damn good. I used to be all about the "heritage" and sentimental/nostalgia, but when those wooden handle breaks when you most need them not to, the spell is broken and you regain your sanity and perspective.

Agreed, what a daft test. Weaken a log with a couple of axes and then praise a different axes that then does 'more' splitting.

@@verysurvival, exactly you shouldn't have done...it means it not a fair test!

I think you would find splitting easier if the platform you are putting the logs on wasn't so high. You are wasting alot of your stroke and gravity assistance having it so high.

wrong way to swing an axe mate, swing back around you up and over your shoulder 1 hand grip 1 hand guide and slide.

I was thinking the same thing when I was watching this. Still a cool video but can't help but notice that more practice and training is required to chop the wood better and more effectively

@@ElPresidentedEscolar Haha. Agreed, his technique is rubbish which is why he struggled. He should remove the “Humble” part and just call himself “Trekker.”

I truly appreciate the effort but you're trying to split one log round with 3 different axes. Find the same sized log rounds and repeat the test using one log per axe, and record the strikes from each axe it takes to split, fracture and cut. Good effort though.

if you have 3 different logs they might have different knots in them

I have the x17 and the x25. Amazing g axes...so sharp and they stay sharp with little maintenance.

The to trick splitting spruce rounds, is you have to cut it right. If it has a row of knots from the branches you cut that as close to the bottom of your log and cut below the next row and split it from the top.

Any thoughts on the new fiskars norden n12? Has it compare to these

one of the most useless tests I've seen around. Use different axes on the same log.

The way you swing is odd and places a lot of strain on your neck and shoulders. That said, as much as I love my classic wooden hafted tools the Fiskars are my go to for many years now for beating around the home and often in the woods as well.

Your splitting log is to high your contacting your log above your apex of the swing. Happy trails

It's not really a splitting log, it's just general surface at the camp. My main cutting log at the wood pile is at a better height.

I have a fiskars 25 is very good but if it is fresh the wood does not tear with anything, only if it dries !!

Look at them legs! woooo! lol I've been wondering about the Fiskars for awhile now

just wanna mention that that wodden axe that you have.....is NOT a splitting axe :D

I'm starting to get a feeling my X27 might be a little too long for me (I'm 6ft). I don't seem to be able to swing it as fast or as accurately as my X25. X17 is good for small stuff (only).

thank you for that review - it shows that all these fiskars x11,x17 are nice but only: when you have super dry wood with no knots of fast growing pine trees with fibres wide apart as they come from monocultral areas. my twisted oaken parts... not dried .... you better look for a saw. :-D

The splitting log is way to high.

Fiskars makes some good tool's. 👊💀👍

X-27 ! Good call ! My brother does a lot of wood splitting has a couple of very heavy splitting axes, they do the work. Good review !

Not sure you credited the knots with holding these logs together perhaps as much as you should have. You seemed to task the X17 with more "knotty stuff" than the X25. Nevertheless, X25 will obviously perform better on tougher splits.

The saying the bigger the better established for a reason 😉
