I fished Racine for the first time this past September. Bad timing due the hot weather prior to getting there followed by 4 days of high winds. I was fishing in my kayak and stayed inside the harbor area the whole time. The last day I was there I could see that a lot of fish had moved in, but time to go home to southern Indiana. Landed one king on my custom painted crankbait and lost several others over the four days. First time I had ever tried salmon fishing out of my kayak. Won’t be the last

Hit island park & south of steelhead facility last weekend on the morning bite. Mix of kings, coho, and an odd large brown. I fished up around where i think you were in the afternoon, but I didn't have any luck, and saw no movement really. Nice catch! I'll keep an eye out for the orange net handle next year.

I’ll be around all winter fishing for those browns and steelhead. Hope to see you out there! Tight lines!

Hey man! I just moved up near Racine. The root is about a mile from my house. Got a good beginner list of equipment for someone that’s new to fishing for trout and salmon? I’ve fished walleye and musky my whole life but I’m brand new to this type of fishing. Rod action, lures, bait, etc? I work right near R&R so maybe I’ll pop in there too. Thanks!

First off, congrats on joining the hunt for some awesome fish. For a rod, I would recommend something with a hard backbone. Something that can really battle strong fish. I wouldn’t go shorter than 7 feet and no longer than 8.5. You want something that can really whip lures out there in the harbors or rivers. For baits I would use in-line spinners in the river. You can also use crank baits when casting in the harbor. Any squarebills will do good. Chartreuse and yellow are some great colors. Another thing you can do is use beads or spawn bags under a float which also works really well. Good luck and tight lines!

I would also go to R&R, they have a great selection of gear and even more information about what to use.
