Fishing the Jetty Rocks, 61st Pier, Galveston
The date was November 27, 2021. We had a very short window of opportunity to fish before the rain moved in. The winds were coming in from the east at about 5 mph. With the recent swings in weather, I decided to bank fish and leave the kayak for another day.

Had alot of great memories on that pier from 1980 to 93. Alicia knocked it down in 83', it used to go out alot further and had a real t-head. met some nice old-timers back then; Badweather Jack, Treat, Delton, Russel M., we'd live on that pier for a solid week in the summer. good times...

The coffee on there could hold a spoon up during the night. I managed a 38 lb red off the t-head. I think it was the second largest that year from that pier. One night I was fishing with a buddy right in the middle of the t and about one am decided to get a coffee. Lots of people fishing. Got back and everyone on the pier was standing in the middle with my buddy holding a bundle of every line one the pier. He cut the leader off and handed me my rod. I asked what had happened and he said as soon as I walked off something hit my line and went to the left end of the pier catching every line and then reversed and caught all the lines to the right end of the pier. I asked if he had any idea what it was. He said yeah it's in the ice chest. That's how he knew which leader was mine. It pays to have a big fishing buddy in times like that. Oh, and it was a good sized gafftop.
That’s good sportsmanship to give your left over bait away to the next fisherman. Great job

@@chiroangler How much does it cost to fish there? I've never been there. I heard you also have to pay for parking.

@@ro.c.3985 I think it's like $12 to fish the pier. Also you have to pay for parking on the seawall. There are signs posted.

LOL that is hilarious man. I was fishing with that guy for about an hour. He came out to scout the conditions and came right back with all his gear. He told me he mostly does fresh water fishing, but he really knew his stuff about saltwater too!

Where did you get the live shrimps? And what size hook are you using?
@chiroangler

Hi, I got the live shrimp from Fat Boys. I also used a #2 circle hook from gamakatsu.
I'm from there and never did fish the jetty or the pier. Lived further down so went to 91st

Thanks man! This weather has been tough lately. I tried to surf fish last week and got skunked.
Use a longer leader in the fall/winter on your cork. like elbow to hand length

What kind of weight and how much weight you used for free line? Thanks
@randomguysview
2 жыл бұрын
Typically when you're freelineing there is no weight but in heavy currents or winds a couple splitshots on the leader don't hurt.
@chiroangler

I use a very small split shot, enough to give me some casting distance.

How about the gear you are using. Pole, reel and line?
@chiroangler
2 жыл бұрын
I use bass gear. 7' medium light powered rod with 20 lb braid to 20 lb mono leader. I have heavier gear, but I find it hard to whip the bait out there.
Is that your truck parking there? Are we allowed to drive into the jetty? Nice catch man.

I believe that's the owner of the pier. You have to park on the seawall.

If you intend to fish the pier or go up to the observation deck, then it's a fee. Otherwise its just like any other jetty.
