Fishing for Crabs! Looping Large Crustaceans From Shore

Skipped the soggy opener and waited for calmer weather to dissipate the strong swells. Found a day that lined up with some prime conditions and free time and met some flips at the Half Moon Bay south jetty, and looped my first keeper dungeness crab of the recreational season PLUS a bonus brown rocky to boot! When the bite is slow, just mix up the bait and cover lots of water till you find them. The harder you work, the better they taste.
Thanks to Ron aka Old Man and the Sea for the large vert loop snare design tip, works great!

You do understand that a snare becomes more valuable the closer to the coast it gets!!

I found a way to make effective crab snares for 50 cents each in 5-10 minutes (the one that caught the rock crab). Let me know if you want a how-to vid.

The crab you caught was a brown rock crab they have bigger claws then the red rock crabs and in my opinion taste better their claws are super sweet

How does this trap function? Does the snare only tighten ones you pull in the line? Or can he get trapped whilst feeding?

Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah it seems to be slow going for a lot of crab snare-ers out there these past two weeks despite the string of good conditions. They're definitely out there though; party boats pulling in limits and I've been getting plenty of large males (which is shocking) by hand out at Ocean Beach, but I imagine things will turn around here shortly. Just gotta keep putting in the time! Be safe out there and have a great holiday weekend.

Have you ever tried the crabhawk trap? I was out crabbing one time and I saw this guy use it and he caught plenty of crabs from the dock. I wonder how it compare to the snarl trap.

Good one! Ish if you retrieve the line with rod it would be good for your reel for long run, just retrieving with reel will shorten your reel gear's life for sure. So pull and reel pull and reel

Rock crab got that sweeter meat! Too bad not enough meat on them though.
