Fishing Canoe Modifications | Old Town Saranac Customisation's

A lot of you guys have been asking about the fishing vessel I use in and around South East Queensland that has featured in the last 6-7 months of footage. Here it is! Very basic design and I am open to other improvements you think I could make to it to make it even better! Cheers

    Your setup is perfect. I live in southeast Louisiana and fish bayous and canals. I just bought the same canoe. After watching your videos I'm really impressed with your ability to stand and fish. That table on top of the stabilizers looks absolutely perfect for landing and unhooking fish. No need to reinvent the wheel here. You and your dad nailed it on the first try. Great job!

    I am glad I found your video. I want to do something similar to my canoe. After watching the video of your friend falling in and him climbing back in I can see just how stable it is. There is no way I would stand up in mine as it is. Matter of fact I flipped it while sitting down first time out LOL.

    Nice to see another Aussie canoe fishing, most canoe fishers are Canadian. I have an old town guide 147 myself. I replaced the molded seats with the old school timber and webbing seats. No middle seat, that a yoke for portages. Had to come up with an inventive mount for my depth sounder so I could easily put it on and off (most of the time I am not fishing). But I love that motor mount you got. I have been recently thinking about putting my electric motor on. And that stabilizer setup looks great too, I'll have to watch some other vids now and see how well they perform.

    Thank you for the video. I have a Saranac 146 DLX and you have given me some great ideas. I especially appreciate the stabilizer mount idea. I could never imagine standing up in the canoe, but seeing you and another do it at the same time, that says a lot about the effectiveness of the stabilizers. And while stabilizers may not be the "cool" thing to have on a canoe, they are when you use the canoe primarily for fishing (which we do). Is your Saranac fiber glass (it appears to be and you have it on a trailer)? I purchased mine this year (2020) and it is polyethylene (must store a polyethylene canoe upside down on the gunwales).

    Just got an old town canoe, just under 17’. I was looking to convert it for fishing. I’ve been researching stabilizers and really like your setup. My question is, does the length of the outriggers matter? Like how far out they go? Also the angles they are on. Some ppl use 45s others 90s. Thanks again for sharing your setup.

    Thanks mate! I suppose the wider the stabilisers stick out the more stable it’ll get and less rocking above the water line. I tucked mine close and found this worked well for me when I fish by myself. Plus I do sometimes fish skinny creeks so it’s good having them nice and close and not catching everything on the way up the shallow skinny water.

    Nice rig! I feel like it might be a benefit to you and your readers in sharing this... If you're solo...you can remove both seats sit in the middle. Adjust seat height with foam ice fishing floor mats. Tying them together with paracord at each corner. Also, I cut a foot off of my trolling motor shaft. Very easy...just need a drill press for small precision hole at the top of the shaft. Maybe your's doesn't have one? If not, awesome! Be careful not to leave too much wire out for when you splice back together, you'll have to stuff it back into the head. Could get right. Just apply more pressure gently. I wish I could post a pic on here...the shorter shaft .makes it so much easier one handed! If this helps anyone on here...Praise the Lord! ❤ And a gentle reminder that, Jesus, loves you.❤ Be BORN AGAIN in, Jesus' Spirit!❤

    At 1:55 in your video, you can see 4 little hooks(?) in the bow of the boat, along with the polygon-shaped hole in btwn the holes you punched out. QUESTION: What purpose are those 4 hooks designed to serve?? (and what is that polygon-shaped hole for?)

  • @dang.fishing

    @dang.fishing

    I believe it’s for old town’s rod mounts (the polygon) and the 4 hooks are to attach a rope or something similar

    Thanks, @dang.fishing! We have this same model & I can't find any mention of those hooks in any manuals, directions, etc. I like the rope/line idea, but I think that would be a single hook-thing so the rope wouldn't get snagged on the other hooks. If I find a definitive explanation from Old Town, I'll post it here. Great mods you made to your canoe, very imaginative & practical.

  • @cleverbastard

    @cleverbastard

    11 ай бұрын

    Yep, you're right. Here's the reply from Old Town (Johnson Outdoors Watercraft): "For your older Saranac models, the decks had cleats on there like in your images that can be used to tie off rope, or any accessories you wanted. The two holes that look like they have little teeth around the edges [what i called polygon-shaped holes], located at the tip and base of the deck are star mounts that can fit any Scotty or Cannon accessory that has a Star-mount. Cannon accessories do tend to have a better/snug fit." Happy fishing!
