Fishing Ascension Island Part 3: The Bite We Came Here For!

Ойын-сауық

The Team is now 25 days into their 37 day trip to Ascension Island. Over the last few weeks the boys have covered thousands of miles of fishing grounds. Plagued with bad weather and hundreds of voracious sharks up until this point, the trip begins to take an unexpected turn.
While hiding from the weather on a windy day the crew stumbles into a new fishing zone. An area seems to have never been fished by previous teams. With a little over a week left the boys work the entire area for several days. The bite is ON. The team makes up for lost time landing several Blue Marlin over the 800# mark and several other quality models to go with it.
As the trip nears its end the crew reflects on their time spent at the remote island and the new relationships they’ve formed. Anthony throws a party for the town with the help of some new friends, and a local fisherman (and friend) weighs in on his experience with Team Badco.
The support team preps the mothership for the loading of the 33 L&H Game-boat along side the fishing team. With no time to waste the boat is loaded immediately after the last day of fishing. The combined teams navigate loading a 15 thousand pound asset by crane in the islands open waters. They successfully load the rig, and everything goes smoothly and as planned…mostly.
The boys say their goodbyes to the island the next morning, before catching their flight off the rock. The feeling is bitter sweet but the intention to return to this mysterious and relatively untouched Island ruminates in everyone’s mind. This will not be the last time the team fishes these grounds…
The crew would like thank all their new friends on the island as well as all the previous captains who helped make this trip possible.

Hey, i saw the Harmatan and i was fishing alongside it some 25 years ago on the Shy with captain Ian from South Africa. I caught 4 blue marlin in 5 days fishing two 600 pounds one 900 pounds and one 1300+ lost because the leader twisted the rod. All on film. This heartbreak haunts me still this day. There was a million dollar price on the biggest grander of the year and i missed it. I saved 10 years for that trip on the coast of Ghana Africa and i would give 10 years of my life to have a second chance. Good luck to you all.

Many of us are living, if only for a moment, vicariously through each of you. I'm handicapped and can no longer stand on a boat nor have the strength to fish. I appreciate your content. Thanks from the ones who can only wish to be on such an adventure. God Bless

I have a question. Why not drag bigger lures? I'm no expert but I have caught quite a few yellowfin tuna, dorado/mahi mahi, and other smaller fish. I caught mahi and 15 lb tuna on lures that were 8" or longer with the skirts. A 1000 lb marlin can probably eat a 50 or even 100 lb tuna. Dragging a 3' long dorado for bait seems totally reasonable to me for fish that big. I suppose it's tough to tow something that heavy and fast. Maybe I need to make you some new lures.

Even elephants eat peanuts! We pull many different sized lures. We keep track of all our stats and in no location that we’ve fished have we recorded large Marlin biting bigger lures over smaller lures. In fact some of our biggest fish have come from our smallest lures in the pattern.
