Thanks for sharing Spencer. Being a broke down fisherman and not being able to catfish anymore, your videos bring back memories of my younger days. Please be careful below those dams at night especially when youbare alone. Back in the 70's I was fishing below wheeler dam on the Tennessee River and thanks God I wasn't alone. I was wearing my life jacket which is required within 800 feet of Wheeler damn and that night was very similar to your session where they had the flood gates open. Anyway my partner and I were fishing for big blues and had done fairly well with several in the 40 and 50 pound range when all of a sudden the boat got pitched to one side really quick and it was sever enough to throw me out of the boat. Luckily my partner was seasoned and cut the anchor rope and came after me. He finally caught up to me and got me in the boat. Needless to say I was shaken pretty bad and we called it quits for the night. Just the fact of being thrown out the boat that night isn't necessarily what scarred me but I fished thus stretch of river many times and what scared was what I couldn't see under the water. People don't realize how much line and old hooks are down there and when when TVA is spilling like that the current alone is strong enough to push old fishing line, old boat actors and ropes and most of all old hooks. Getting hung in all that stuff can mean life or death if youbare not prepared. You probably already do this Spencer but if fish alone especially below dams it's always a good idea to have a very sharp knife strapped to your waist or ankle. It might just save your life if you are thrown overboard and get hung up in old line or even old cast nets that have been lost. Not preaching but trying to give you some good advise that I learned from my mistakes over the years. Take care and as always thanks for including us viewers in your fishing trips. I only crappie and smallmouth fish now due to back problems but I remember getting my line peeled on more then one occasion. Really sick feeling when you get spooled using 85 pound dacron line......only had it happen 3 times in my lifetime but thise were huge fish. Could not turn them and thats when I was a young strong buck.

Thanks for taking the time to share that reminder. I keep a knife and often a pair of pliers on my belt. Mainly for other things, but would work in situations like that in a pinch. I sure hope I never have that concern, but it's a real concern. Take care sir. Thanks for taking the time to watch.

  • @egregiousblunder5395

I don't know about Spencer, but my favorite rigs for big flats is a Whisker Seeker FMJ 7'6 H rod paired up with an old school Abu Garcia 7000 series reel. The 6500 C3's are great too, just make sure they are vintage stock and not the new ones with junky plastic internal gears, spool them up with 80lb power pro and you are good. Otherwise, my go to setup is a typical Santee Cooper rig, make sure to use flat no roll sinkers, not egg sinkers as well. Bait wise, live green sunfish, blue gills, and mud cats are the top choices. Try to see what native bait fish and smaller species are in your area to see what they may be targeting as well.

Egregious Blunder is correct. It sounds like it’s as much about where you fish than anything. If all you’re catching is small/medium channels, target more structure, increase your bait size or change to live bait like sunfish. Three way and Sante Cooper rigs are the way to go for me.

@Dallas RH Spencer has a great channel. Another great channel who targets bigger fish is Steve Douglas. He shows his rigs on many of his episodes. A big promoter of the Sante Cooper rig. Both great guys. If you’re trying to learn, I would give the nod to Steve. But that doesn’t detract from Spencer’s channel at all. And it appears Spencer is going to try to make the video you’re requesting. Until then, go check out Steve’s channel.

Hey Spencer, nice vid again, just a quick question, up here in Canada we have channel cats but no flatheads or blues, ive thought about trying to keep one for eating, i did once years ago, a big one close to 20 lbs. And it was very greasy. Im just curious if the smaller ones are not so bad or if other types of catfish are a little better. Just thought id ask, considering you eat plenty of cats in some of your vids. Any input is appreciated. Loved the vid, keep em coming, ill keep watching em lol.

Again, glad you're teaching those whiskers how to bite. Yeah, gates open, fish get to feeding. Knew they opened, 12" below flood stage-if it stays that way. Those at the dam don't much worry about us a few mile down river. They let the water behind the dam get 19' above average, we'll be wet down here for awhile. I was on it today looking a couple of places over as I dodged brush piles and trees. Blues are actually blue here huh, ought to see them in places like Deerpoint Lake, some of the other lakes in the Sand Hills. Butter cats are really dark, oak leaves tanic stains the water and the fish too.

@@jimmylowe1233 That's true with crappies, bass, some others, but whiskers are always on the bottom, and they're on the bottom of deep rivers where Spencer fishes in his area and others. I've fished in holes in the Mississippi and Missouri deeper than I've found in the Gulf, fished in the shallows of both, shallow rivers and lakes, in middle America. The 4 types of whiskers there aren't anything like this region in coloring. Nor are the crappies, bass, even the pickerel(jacks here).
