Fishguard to Cardiff - on my way home through the Welsh countryside and coastline
I came into Fishguard in the morning aboard the Stena Europe using a combined SailRail ticket which covered the ferry journey plus onward travel to a UK station. So, after waiting nearly 2 hours for the train (and having a very big second breakfast at the Station Café), I'm ready for the second leg.
I wasn't sure how nice the ride would be so I got my cameras out to see. As it turns out, it was a really lovely run and worthy imho to be a Johnny Hoover video!

Cost: SailRail combined ticket, Rosslare to any UK station : £54.90 / €63,50
Date of Travel: April 2023

I enjoyed your journey from Fishguard to Cardiff after watching your journey from Rosslare. Hope you videoed your journey back home to Devon.

I stopped recording on this trip at Cardiff, because the run Exeter-Cardiff was already on the channel here: Are HSTs still any good at over 40 years old? Exeter to Cardiff with Great Western Railway. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5mcsNuvpKjJd7w.html ...and you get to watch it in and old HST before they were taken off this route.
Used to drive most of this area between 2002-2007 as a Sales Manager, great train journey....

A very scenic journey, well reported. I do value the info you provide on the history of stations and the background economics of the line.

Really enjoyed this! I've driven from Fishguard after crossing the Irish Sea and wondered what the train journey through Wales would be like. Have you covered the Heart of Wales line? Had a quick look and couldn't find it. That's certainly on my bucket list!

Heart of Wales is still on my list, but I will be doing it at some point. That little run from Fishguard to Cardiff was a real surprise for me too. I had no idea it was going to be such a nice line. Thanks for watching 👍

I took the train to Milford Haven last year and had to change at Swansea and we stopped at every station en route. Very pretty.

Yes. I do fancy a ride to both Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock. Thanks for watching 👍
The Stena Rail & Sail deals are quite good. We've been impressed when we've taken advantage, although ours were more coach & sails. All good. And the video captured, definitely "Johnny Hoover Travels" channel worthy.

Fantastic, it’s a beautiful line, Llanelli is my home town and I love our little station, I wasn’t aware of the history though, good info, thank you.

Yes it was a great run. I had no preconceptions of what it would be like and it was lovely! Best wishes to Llanelli from Devon 👍

West Wales is so beautiful and breathtaking when travelling on the train. I definitely would want to go there and explore the wonders of what West Wales is like. Plus TfW should order more new extra trains and to make the journey lot more convenient and quicker.

Yes it really is a very pretty line as you chug along! Thank for watching 👍
A nice way to brighten up a somewhat wet and murky Friday morning, Johnny! Have only done the journey westwards towards Fishguard Harbour backin the day at night, which in those days, involved changing trains at Swansea. Out of interest, did you film the portion of your journey from Cardiff to Exeter?.
@JohnnyHooverTravels
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Roddy. It is pretty wet and murky here in Devon today too. No, I didn't record the Cardiff to Exeter portion as I already have the journey in reverse on the channel on an HST. Incidentally, this service is often a short form IET now. As it was on the day I travelled. Definitely going to be more Sail/Rail on the channel though. It was a lovely ride from Rosslare to Exeter.
"Estuaries are our speciality!" - JHT That was great, esp the run along the water and the sheep-spotting :) Did you manage any more breakfasts on the rest of the journey...

It's Wales, there must be a few sheep. And no, I was just "Johnny Two-breakfasts". 😀
I Googled it and found there are 155 estuaries in Britain. I still don't know what an estuary is.

Haha! Yes, I can see the issue. When does a river just run into the sea and when does it turn first into an estuary before it gets there? I actually live right where the River Exe becomes the Exe Estuary but I'd be blowed if I could draw a line on the map to say where one ends and t'other starts! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching it 👍
Just to point out that the line to Fishguard is the main south Wales line, the branch line runs from Clarbeston Rd to Milford Haven.

Open railway map marks the line to Haverfordwest as the SWML. But they may be wrong of course! Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm always happy to be picked up on stuff 👍

Thank you for your reply, I have enjoyed your videos & your travels, look forward to your next trip. Back in the 70s & 80s I was signalman at Clarbeston Road signalbox & the South Wales Mainline was to Fishguard, strange I know as the greater amount of traffic uses the branch to Milford!

@@tonyminkowski846 ah well. If you were actually in the box, then I respect your knowledge over an open source internet map. Thank you for that clarification 👍
Totally agree that you often get some gems when travelling a new line, although Ely - Kings Lynn last week didn't do much for me! Sad that a 'boat train' is two 153s, even though they've been refurbished to a reasonable standard. Looking forward to your next video.

I suppose the Fens aren't noted for their scenic nature. It wasn't the fact they were 153s, but more having to wait nearly 2 hours for them to rock up that irked me! Thanks for watching! Next Friday, I'll be on the Night Riviera sleeper from Penzance to London 👍

@@JohnnyHooverTravels You'd think TfW could get the trains to match up with the ferries, I think there's a similar problem at Holyhead albeit at silly o'clock in the morning.

@@kevinellis8869 tbf I think tide times change, but train paths are pretty fixed. Also, that incoming service to Fishguard from Cardiff may have connected well for people on the sailing back to Rosslare.
What will be the next journey, is it home to Exter?
@JohnnyHooverTravels

No. I've already got a ride from Exeter to Cardiff on the channel so I didn't record the final ride home. This Friday's video will be a journey on the Night Riviera sleeper from Penzance to London. Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching another 👍
haha 78 mph on 75 mph train and line. lol i travel on this line alot because i live in llanelli and llanelli to carmarthen is a lovely line. odd you didn't go on the swansea distact line turning off the carmarthen to swansea line at Llandeilo juntion onto the heart of wales for couple of miles to go on the swansea distact line and back on the main line at briton ferry between neath and port talbot
