Fisherman's Rib in the round (1- or 2-color): a Knittycat's Knits Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Video tutorial on how to knit the Fisherman's rib stitch in the round, in either 1 color or 2 colors. When knit in the round, this stitch is worked on an even number of stitches (set-up row + 2-row repeat) using either circular needles or double-pointed needles.
Pattern:
[Abbreviations: K=knit; K1b=knit into the stitch below; P=purl; P1b=purl into the stitch below]
For the 2-color version, I have designated colors as main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC). Pattern is the same for 1-color or 2-colors (have indicated in parenthesis which colors to use when knitting in 2 colors).
Cast on an even number of stitches. Place a stitch marker before joining in the round (as shown in the video).
Set-up row (for 2-color, use MC): *K1, P1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 1 (for 2-color, can use either MC or CC): *K1b, P1. Repeat from * to the end.
Row 2 (for 2-color, if used MC in Row 1, then use CC in Row 2; if used CC in Row 1, then use MC in Row 2): *K1, P1b. Repeat from *to the end.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for the pattern.

    Great video! I have a simple tip to add. When knitting FMR on a loop in one colour. To know which row you are on, no need to panic nor put a marker. Look at your stitches closely and you'll notice that some stitches have a double thread passing through the base of the stitch, some have an single thread. (for example on one row: all the Knit stitches have one thread at their base and all the pearl stitches have a double - or the other way around) the stitches you knit below are the stitches with one single thread passing through their base. I put one marker at the end go that row so I know when to switch for the next row.

    Dearest Knittycat, I am in great need of your great experience. I am trying,and trying to knit a 2color Fisherman’s knit in the round. I have no trouble with the pattern but I can’t seem to understand when I finish a row and have both colors behind how I pick up the right color without mixing both colors. I end up with two vertical rows with color one and color two having both colors. I have watched your tutorial at least fifty times. You explain what to do but you don’t knit to the end of the row so that I can watch how you change colors. I have been knitting forever, as you know, so why am I having so much trouble. I can do this in Brioche easily. You are so great .Thank you sooooo much. Jan on the Oregon coast.🤗

    Hi Jan, so sorry for the delay in responding. I had seen your previous comment and was hoping to test out the stitch before I could respond; it has been a while since I knit the 2-color hat so needed a refresher (: Well, I tested it out just now and at the end of each row, take the yarn to the back and bring the new yarn from under it. This should give you a neater edge. Note that the edge/join may not have the exact same look as the rest of the stitches but it should be neater if you follow this throughout. Hope this helps and again, thanks so much for your patience. Do let me know if that works. It has been a hectic Summer for me and I have been very much backlogged and unable to post new videos. I will be posting a complete Fisherman's rib hat video (in 1 and 2 colors), which will also show the decreases; I will be sure to call out handling of yarn at the end of rows. Things are slowly clearing off my plate, so hoping I can do this by end of next week. Thanks for being such a great supporter of my channel and best wishes my friend 😊

    I have a questions: Two color fisherman’s rib in the round, when switching from color A to color B at the beginning of the round, do you cross your yarns, pull the new yarn under the just used yarn? I am just working on a Cowl and the yarn switch looks neat most of the time, but there are a few times when it looks messy and I think that’s when I crossed the yarns wrong. Thank you if you can clarify.

    Do you know of a full video tutorial with three double ended needles for those that don't have round needles?

  • @KnittycatsKnits

    @KnittycatsKnits

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrew, sorry I don't think I have a full tutorial on knitting a hat using double-pointed needles (DPNs) right from the start. However, I do have a video on transferring needles from a circular needle onto DPNs and you can check that out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pIB7ltRmg9qXoc4.html. If you do wish to use DPNs from the start to knit a project such as this hat, then you will need a total of 4 needles: 3 needles to split the stitches onto and 1 needle to knit around with. It is really not that bad if you try it and using DPNs right from the start is sometimes needed if you don't have/need enough stitches to stretch across a 16" circular needle. I will plan to do a video on this in the future, so thanks for the question and for watching my video. Best wishes (:

  • @KnittycatsKnits

    @KnittycatsKnits

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Donna, the number of stitches would depend on yarn type used and needle size. For an 8-year-old, typical hat circumference is about 19-20 inches. So, if you use similar yarn as shown in description of my other Fisherman's rib hat video (see kzread.info/dash/bejne/qpqDp7aEfZqbZ6w.html), then I expect 72 sts may work. Highly recommend checking gauge first. Hope this helps but let me know if you have other questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for the project 😀

    In the first round of decreases, you started out with the K1Below, P1 . . . but on the second needle you did K1, Purl1Below. Was that intentional? Are we doing Knit 1 below or Purl 1 below on the first round of decreases? Or do you switch back and forth?

  • @KnittycatsKnits

    @KnittycatsKnits

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question, monelle! The best way to know the number of stitches to cast on for bulky yarn would be to determine the gauge by knitting a small swatch (sample). Please see my video on how to this at kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZd8kselfbjKqNI.html. The yarn label should typically say what size needles are recommended; 10-1/2 may work. But you will need fewer stitches than what my pattern calls for and will need to adjust when doing the hat decreases when shaping the crown. Hopefully this helps but let me know if you still have questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes!😊

  • @KnittycatsKnits

    @KnittycatsKnits

    Yes, that should work just as well. Brioche and Fisherman's rib stitches are like twins; they have the same, super-stretchy look. Fisherman's rib may be a bit easier for a beginner. But be sure to put in proactive lifelines as you knit (both are harder to unwork if you need to take out stitches to fix knitting).

    Does 60 stitches give a medium size hat

  • @KnittycatsKnits

    @KnittycatsKnits

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Samidha, that depends on type of yarn and size of needles you use. Would suggest making a small swatch with the yarn you wish to use to determine gauge (for medium weight yarns, can try needle sizes from 4-6 mm or so). Once you know gauge, then can determine number of stitches. The hat you make should be about 16-17 in circumference; it will stretch to fit a standard 21 in head. So say your sample that you knit up in the pattern with say 13 sts measures 4 inches, then knitting with 4 times 13, will give you 64 sts (going even for hat pattern). And 64 sts should give you a hat that fits. Hope this helps.
