Fisher Space Pen. What No-One talks about.

I love my Fisher Space Pen, but there is one issue no-one talks about.
About "90 Seconds Vlogs"
I always liked the idea of making vlogs. Not because I want to show my life, but rather because usually vlogs are boring. Basically as a film editor I think that making your mundane life interesting in a vlog is not as easy as many people think. That is why I want to challenge myself and create these short vlogs. Topics will be about bags, film making, my work as a film editor and more. As long as it is entertaining within 90 seconds.

HOW I REVIEW:
As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
LINKS:
For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals. For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.

In hindsight I probably should have mentioned how long I have been using the pen before needing to replace the cartridge. As mentioned in the video this issue seems to start once the pen looses pressure or ink. I have been using this pen for almost two years. Granted not for intensive writing but for small notes or to do lists. But with this as an edc pen in mind and that long time of use, I still recommend this pen as an edc pen. And even if you have the issue with the ink, you can easily find an alternative replacement cartridge.

If you are ok with gel ink, but like the form factor of the Fisher Space Pen Bullet, then you can use the Zebra RJK7 as a replacement cartridge. The gel ink is very nice to write with and is not prone to causing blobs on the paper. You need to snip a few mm of the back of the cartridge but there is no ink there and it is made of plastic so it’s very easy to do with a sharp knife or a pair of scissors. The video quality on this vlog was also very good :).

Interesting that you need to replace the refill after only 2 years. I've been using Fisher Space Pens for over 40 years and I journal extensively. I find my refills last 3 to 5 years depending upon colour. Blue lasts about 5 years, Black 3-4 and Red about 3 years. And yes, that leaking is a sign the refill is about to give up the game. I always have spares though so it's a no issue for me. Oh, and your Samsung's image quality is great 😄

How long a refill lasts depends on how much you use it, and the video is about what happens when it starts to get empty, which you agree with: "And yes, that leaking is a sign the refill is about to give up the game" It`s not about how long they can be stored..

Thanks for sharing your experience. Ive had multiple cartridges with this issue. Maybe qc in Germany is different? Or the gas inside the cartridge is acting different in Germanys colder climate? I am not great in physics, but doesn't gas act different in different temperatures? So maybe it expands more once it is hotter? Just a very uneducated guess tbh.

  • @Youknowthebo

    @Youknowthebo

Hey mate. This is actually only my second replacement. With my use as an edc pen the cartridge lasts a very long time which also might be the reason. I assume that the gas of a gas filled cartridge might leak over time so that the ball might not be able to close properly (this obviously is just my naiv scientific explanation 😂). But I can't remember if the first cartridge had the same issue. It was a blue cartridge so I switched it quite early to a black one.

I have the same problem with my fisher AG7 space pen right from opening the box, and it virtually unusable.😂 I ditched the fisher original refill, and replace it with a BIC Cristal original refill and/or Schneider Slider Edge refill, with cutting to shorten the ink catridge, and paper tap wrapping at some point of the refill for the AG7 spring to have something to hold on, and the problem is solved. Considering i don't write in water, nor on oiled paper, nor upsidedown, nor in zero gravity, so the new modded refills works like a charm for me, for cheap dirt price, and much much smoother than the fisher original refill.😊

I wouldn't worry much about ink leaking out of the pen onto your bags. The ink creates a blob on the tip of the pen and doesn't leak out of the closed cap. However, you need to check before writing because the blob will get on the paper on your first letter of writing and when you move over the blob with your hands your hand gets dirty and that might get on your bag or clothes

This is why I use a small fountain pen in leu of the space pen. I am not going to space or writing upside down. If I need something that I can write in rain with I just bring a uni-bal vision fine. The annoyance of the leak factor is not worth it for me, and a small fountain pen costs less or the same. There is also a roller ball that runs fountain pen ink that is small and cheaper with less issues. Not to mention the ink long term is cheaper and performs better then the fisher refills. Fisher Space Bullet 27USD J. Herbin 16USD (small clear plastic rollerball that uses fountain pen ink) Pilot Petit1 Mini 3.30USD (Small clear plastic fountain pen) Kaweco Classic Sport 24USD (small fountain pen) Onto Tashe 14USD (small metal fountain pen) When the pen gets low on ink refill the cartridge or use a new cartridge or buy a converter (like a cartridge, just with a filling mechanism included in the part)

The bob is particularly bad with the coloured ink. I found red the worst. I don't think is just due to low ink levels but the design. I used pressure ink in the G2 Parker refill and have been using that cartridge for many years with no blotting. As the ink in any of these lasts a very long time it might be down to individual batches of production. The Fisher bullet pen with black refill I have carried and used the longest (over five years) is fine. The red refill purchased at the same time ran out quickly as most of the ink was blotted from the tip.

I used the Fisher fine red in a Parker and a fine black in the bullet pen. I also matched ink to bullet pen colour for blue, black, red, green and purple as a school set for my daughter. My refill of choice for G2 pens is the Schmidt P600 fine These of course do not fit a Fisher bullet pen but any Parker pen from inexpensive Jotters to expensive gold 75 and 180 series. The bullet pen is better EDC but the Zebra T3 is even smaller and the OHTO Minimo takes a range of other refills, different colours and including pressurized. Anything smaller is just the metal refill itself like the refill for a Victorinox 91mm pocket knife (Champ) or Swiss Tool.

Parker did not engineer the cartridge or the Fisher Space pen - the hint is in the name. Yes the Russians used a pencil. But a typical pencil sheds graphite and if that floated into the electronics could cause problems. The Russian used less electronics or sealed the units and were less concerned. But pencils do not have to have lead or graphite cores and alternatives could easily have been used. So more a myth and of course Americans it was claimed threw money at problems instead of looking at existing alternatives in their space program.

@@P373RV2 Of course graphene was first extracted in 2004, Old Mir was decades earlier. The ink bobs do get everywhere you don't want but are so sticky that I doubt that they would float and the refill lasts longer than any "flights" or periods in space undertaken to date.

The trick is to tear a small piece of paper towel and jam it into the pen cap and it will always remove the excess. ✌️

Yeah. Absolute over-hyped waste of money. I owned about 6 space pens, gave them away very quickly.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing. I do not share pens either, and I’m trying to still stay home as much as possible because young people and some people believe facebook memes over real science.

Well, to be fair: this is the first time after two years of use that I have to change the cartridge. With that in mind this is a small issue.
