@Alexander Habbe - The best analogy I can think of is that it's like the social and political real life equivalent of having those special sunglasses from the movie _They Live._ Eyes truly open, alert and aware of the superficiality of so much that is taken for granted, and the insidiousness that can be hidden in it not questioned. Things that too many people stay asleep when faced with, their senses refusing to be conscious of it. It's not necessarily a claim that you even perceive everything under the surface, but more that you're actively trying to shine a light down there. Unfortunately, the term has been co-opted and turned negative to describe the most shallow representation of 'woke' which is more like sleepwalking than actually being awake, and it shoehorns in issues in an insincere, artificial manner. Now it's used a lot to derisively poison the well on these issues, lump all that in with what it used to be, and confuse people on what being _woke_ is about.

Jamel, I dunno if you reacted to Fishbone and to this song after my recommendation, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who suggest them to for a reaction but i'm sure I've spent enough enthusiasm and words on them to encourage you to give'em a try. I'm glad you weren't disappointed, I'm glad.... happy to hear your words about the crowd diversity and that you caught my point about how much important would have been if Metal, and Rock in general, had more black musicians and bands creating music and performing on stage as an alternative to RAP and R'n'B . Something like that would have been important good repercussions on AfroAmerican culture and culture in general. Fishbone went even further and is sad that that role hasn't been sufficiently recognized. For all gods sake... I found out about Fishbone here in Italy and you still had no idea they ever existed? Sounds unbelievable even only thinking about it! The band is still performing today, the lineup has seen many changes along the years and that's a real pity because they could seriously be huge. They definitely have been influential but nothing takes away my belief they could have become one of the greatest bands in history. You know what... who cares... they ARE one of the greatest bands ever. If you reacted to this thanks to my suggestion... well... that fills my heart with joy, I love when my passion for music becomes contagious!

Fishbone was and is a truly amazing band; an unbridled artistic manifestation of authenticity, eclecticism, and love. I saw them in Louisville in 2012, when Angelo, Norwood, and Walter were the only original members, but they and the rest of the lineup at the time, delivered every bit of passion, energy and love that I imagine they ever had to us, an audience of..idk, maybe a 100 or so people. And they were all super nice, and sociable after the show, too. Fishbone was, in my opinion, the pinnacle of what I think "alternative rock" was all about in the beginning: eclecticism. At least that's the groundwork that was laid by bands like Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Fishbone in the 80s, and explored further, with a plethora of variety in the 90s, exemplified by the band lineups of lollapalooza--at least the few years or so in the 90s, to my knowledge. Which by the way, this video is footage of Fishbone's Lollapalooza '93 performances, which sadly, Kendall Jones, the writer of this song, was not there to play, but that's a whole other story. It really saddens me that the album this song was on: Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe...that album somehow ended up being their downfall, when in my opinion, it was their peak. It's my favorite album of theirs, after a series of albums leading up that I also absolutely love. It was their last album to feature all of the original lineup +the additional second guitarist, John Bigham. I believe this album was the peak expression of Fishbone's development of their craft as songwriters. I can't say enough about how profound that album is to me; eclecticism realizing its best potential. It's all over the place stylistically, but in a way that's not forced, contrived, or gimmicky...it's the antithesis of all of that; you get metal, ska, funk, punk, hip hop, soul, blues...etc. and on every single song--every single style--it feels like Fishbone is right at home. You can tell that made this metal song, because they HAD TO make this metal song; it was authentically within Kendall, and by the same token you can tell that the beautiful, heartwarmingly sweet, soulful "Lemon Meringue" written by Norwood, came from the same place of authentic passion. To me, as diverse as it is, it all feels like it creates a cohesive mood. Despite that profound quality, maybe too many people just weren't ready for that level of eclecticism, sadly. When I first heard the album in 2006, it challenged me; it pushed me out of my comfort zone of musical taste. At the time, I was still mostly comfortable in the rock/metal realm. I had started branching out with some funk rock/alternative rock, like the aforementioned, but nothing yet, like what I experienced from this album. I was initially drawn in by THIS song, Servitude; I could not stop listening to it; the metal riffing contrasted with Chris Dowds, soulful melodic singing, the electrifying rhythm, the sick-ass guitar solos...to this day, it's one of my favorite metal songs. Having been stuck on this song before hearing the rest of the album, so I expected to hear a bomb-ass metal album--90's style. Instead, when I first skimmed through the tracklist, I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't that; or it only was with a few songs, but it was a profound blessing in disguise, because the more rock/metal oriented songs sounded and felt so good to me, and the more limited sensibilities I had at the time, that I HAD to keep giving the other songs a chance, and in doing so, it wasn't long before I realized I love every song, which led to me broadening my musical tastes to a whole new level, which is a truly invaluable thing as a musician/music fanatic. Thank you so much, to every member of Fishbone, past and present, for all of the art and love that you've given the world. I love every one of you with all my heart

I loved their ska/punk/funk fusion, and they put on amazing shows (until Angelo started bringing out a theremin). I understand why they moved on though, as Ska had mutated into vacuous party music in its 3rd wave. (Ironic that most people equate it with white frat boys now, since it was born in Jamaica). Oh, and how about the Roots getting into trouble for playing Fishbone's "Lyin' Ass Bitch" when Michelle Bachmann was on Fallon?

They were so before their time and it sucks bc they should have been huge. I had a huge crush on Angelo, the lead singer (as well as instrumentalist.) The kind of longing crush you only get when you’re young. He was so dynamic and cool. I found them kind of late, late 90’s, early 2000’s. I found them when a friend was playing some of their music. I found their videos and was obsessed for a hot min.

great music touches everybody...so true, man. Fishbone never got the credit or fame that so many other acts got in the 80s and 90s...and race may have played a part, but I think the deeper truth was that they were controversial, critical, thoughtful and smashed barriers...which made them more dangerous than most other acts of their time. If they'd aimed for safe tropes they could have been a hit factory...but they could be playful and make fun songs...but they also played from their heart and spoke their truth without fear...and that made them powerful...and beloved by fans. You noticed the diverse crowd...that was a unique factor of Fishbone...few bands other than Bad Brains and the Specials had such amazing mixed crowds, where respect and brotherhood ruled the day. I feel like the age of isolation and internet communications has stripped away some of that precious universal respect and love that was part of the era of alt-rock.

This is FAR from a "representative" Fishbone track. ...in fact, this album, itself (GIve A Monkey A Brain And He'll Swear He's The Center Of The Universe), among: fans of the band, casual listeners, reviewers, radio D.J.s ...pretty much everyone! -Even the band itself! (they claim that their slow "dissolution" began here, actually!), it was considered "controversial" and had, both, ardent lovers of and negators of. ...It generated disparity and rifts. - Just sayin'! --I would have gone with (would STILL go with) earlier material, such as: (my first choice) "V.T.T.L.O.F.D.G.F." or "Ugly" or "Lyin' Ass Bitch" or, even, their SEMINAL: "Party At Ground Zero" OR better yet!)) the GREAT "One Day (from Truth And Soul -- Which, also, includes their fantastic cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" [which introduced Curtis' greatness to a large portion of my generation, whose parents and older siblings, apparently, had SHITTY record collections, with NO CURTIS in them!!! 😲😵😂😜🤘🤘] as well as: "Mighty Long Way", "Bonin' In The Boneyard", "Pouring Rain", "Ghetto Soundwave", "Change" (pretty much every track ON it!! 😋😁)-) Fishbone have a catalog FULL of ska-, funk, punk- and heavy metal-influenced songs which: break boundaries, set new standards and display the type of deft, intricate musicianship (musical excellence you RARELY see collected in a single grouping of ANY sort!! While ska and reggae (and other associated offshoots of Jamaican music-styles) were massive influences on British/English punk rock, they were, relatively unknown on the U.S. side (except through the underground where interest in and knowledge of them filtered through to some via the punk community). Fishbone were, in MY experience, the first (and at the time, I think: ONLY!) band, even close to the mainstream who employed ska sounds, feels or any of the elements. They were, definitely, outsiders and developed more acceptance through their INIMITABLE, UNFORGETTABLE live performances and, later-on, through the development of what became known as "alternative" music and the rising into "common recognition: of what had previously, only, been "underground" music and bands. This happening in the 1990s The Fisher brothers [original Bassist and drummer - The rhythm section were brothers. Yes. 😁😋👍👍🤘🤘🔥] were core elements in the band's formation and sound (but, then so were ALL of the founding members, incl. Chris Dowd, Walter Kibby II, Kendall Jones and Angelo Moore!!!!! 🤘🔥🤘). Drummer, Fish (who, initially, left Fishbone in?? I THINK, 1998? ...but is, now, back, with them 🤷‍♂️), actually, was the drummer in Wicked Wisdom [Jada Pinkett's nu-metal outfit - who were fairly good, I must admit!]. 🤘🔥🤘 Every single one of these guys is RIDICULOUSLY talented as a musicians and many of them as writers and arrangers, as well! If you've never seen FISHBONE play live, you are missing-the-fuck, right, -out! These guys NOT ONLY put out the MOST energy I have EVER seen or FELT, anywhere (and I've been to over 350 shows in my lifetime -so: I have a "gauge," here!! 😋😲😁😁🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘), but they play EVERY show (no matter how large or small!!!!! - I've seen this band play to 50 people (IF that!!!!) ...and it felt like a stadium show, MFer!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁😁😁💜💜💜💜🤘🔥🤘), NOT only "TO THE FANS" or "FOR THE FANS," but, specifically TO the fans who ARE THERE!!!!!! They are THAT in tune with shit! You can't get much better than Fishbone, live. NEVER dissatisfying. 💜

Hi, darling, I've just seen this reaction, and I have a bit to say re. Fishbone. Firstly, please look in to their back catalogue, I guarantee you'll love it! Secondly: I was a massive fan back in the day - I ran a fanzine in the late 80s/early 90s because I was such a huge music fan (late teens, early 20s) and I interviewed them a couple of times (ahh, pre interweb lol!). Fantastic blokes, all of them. They still are the best live band I've ever seen/experienced - I'm shortly turning 50, so I've seen a few ha! When I was 17 me and a couple of friends travelled from London to the Netherlands (on boats and buses) just to see them at the Pinkpop Festival. TOTALLY worth it! (you can find footage from that gig online - you're welcome lol!) As to where they are now, and why they're not massive...well, from my perspective and experience.......they were black. And utterly f**king fabulous. And that's why they didn't get the support in the early 90s, when they should have had it.

I love Fishbone! They are so great and stylisically all over the place. They are a metal-funk-ska-soul-punk rock band!! :-) They're also one of the best live concert bands on the planet! They have never really broken through to a huge following though-- which breaks my heart, honestly. Their music could really bring people together, but too many people have either never heard it, or dismissed it, because it's so eclectic. To me, they're legends!

I went to college 87-91 and grew up listening to this band. Saw them multiple times and yes, as a white man, I can tell you their shows, vibe, and scene were all about human truth and soul (see what I did there 😀). They were/are outrageously good. Their challenge was they were too smart, too confrontational, and too good for the times. If you ever want an example of a band ahead of their times it is Fishbone. They would be revered in today’s times. Yet, they didn’t despair and just kept bonin’ in the boneyard. Much, much respect to Fishbone, a true original.

More than any other band, Fishbone was the soundtrack of my youth from the mid-80s to the early 90s. Thank you for checking them out. They are still touring in some form, but this song was from the last album recorded with their original lineup, and it was never quite the same again after this. The question of what happened is a complicated one, but I think it mostly had to do with the fact that radio, and even their own fans, didn't know how to categorize them. Their sound changed radically from album to album, and even from song to song (and even within any given song), so it was always a challenge to keep up with them. This album was a turning point, because they had finally began to get some mainstream attention and it was probably the most radio-friendly record they ever recorded. Unfortunately, their most talented songwriter (the one who wrote this song) quit the band right after the album was released, and other original members began dropping out soon after. Most of them are back together now, so I keep hoping against hope that they will record some new music at this level. You need to see them live to get the full effect - might want to check this out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoeZxbORfLregpc.html

I was lucky enough to play shows with them both and I've seen them many times. Their live shows were a spiritual experience. Record label's didn't know how to market them. • @SudsRegal

Fishbone in their prime (circa late 1980's - early 1990's) were untouchable live! Bands like Janes Addition, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Alice in Chains all sang praises for Fishbone and how their explosive live shows meant any band that headlined after them just looked flat regardless of how huge that band happened to be. They utterly smashed so many musical boundaries, mastered so many genres. mixed humour with ultra serious social commentary and prided themselves on their exceptional musicianship and most importantly, their originality. For me it was their amazing use of horns with crunching guitar riffs that made them so unique and original. Their sound evolved with each album adding much heavier elements and tones along the way, almost progressive metal with a handful of tunes on the 1993 album 'Give a Monkey a Brain..." but they also continued to write songs that ranged from ska, funk, thrash to punk rock like they owned each genre. There are more styles of music on display on that album than any other in my opinion and for that reason, Sony/Colombia records reaaallly struggled to come to terms with how to market such a diverse band. It's almost criminal how influential they were on the alt rock scene internationally by the early 1990's yet by the early 2000's they were almost forgotten by all but diehard fans and all the musicians they influenced. Their mainstream presence died almost instantly once they lost their major label connection. Their decades long career and their story is such an emotionally rollercoaster, it would make an incredibly fascinating and dramatic film. Never has there been a band more important or more relevant than Fishbone: 5 African American boys from South Central LA just throwing all their musical influences in the mix and the result was so refreshing, so original and fun yet also thought provoking. I thank you Jamel_AKA_Jamal for reacting to this epic song and bringing attention back to this national treasure called Fishbone! I suggest going back to their debut ep 'Fishbone' and working chronologically through their albums. Unfortunately their magic was diluted once their original guitarist/founding songwriter Kendall Jones departed in 1993 followed shortly by Chris Dowd (keyboards/vocals/trombone). The original lineup reformed for the first time in decades only a few years ago (minus Kendall Jones) so I'm so curious to see whether they end up back in the studio or if it's just for touring their classic material. They are one of my all time favourite bands and the world has really never seen the likes since, certainly not to come out of South Central...
