FISH FINDER basics

In this episode I go over in detail all the Fish Finder Basics you need to get familiar with , and understand the fundamentals of this piece of electronic gear to assist you in having a successful day fishing on the water. I cover the difference between traditional sonar and CHIRP. I also give an extensive overview of the basics, such as frequencies, cones, gain, clutter, noise and how to control and manipulate these visuals on your read out screen. Lastly, I explain the speed at which your fish finder shows what you are seeing, known as scroll speed, and how this affects what type of fishing you are doing along with how to control it for each individual method. If you're new to fishing and are looking for some solid advice on one the most pertinent pieces of equipment on your boat, or maybe you're just trying to figure out how to tweak this toy to do what you want... This episode is a must see.
Enjoy,
Tight lines & good vibes.

    Captain I knew nothing about fishfinders I’ve been scouring youtube for a useful introduction and was finding not much content and especially not any great content, at least until I saw this video. This was so educational and comprehensive for someone in my position. I feel like I just sat for a 101 course, lol. Thank you Cap 💪

    Hi Heath, that was an excellent tutorial. If fishermen can understand those basics, then they are 90% there. I had two fish finders on my last boat. One at the helm for running and one on the transom for fishing. That way I could always see the depth while driving and the fish and structure when fishing. This was a very good video. Hope all is well with the Crew. Unfortunately, my best friend, in Ocean City, NJ, call me last night to tell me his wife has stage four cancer and it's pretty bad. Life isn't fair. She only 68. Have fun and good luck, Mickey

    Hi Mickey, sorry to hear that about your freind. Yes, life isn't fair, and when it rains it always seems to pour. About the video, I had fun making this one. Have had a quite a few people asking about fish finders. I know this video is really just a general overveiw, but I hope it answers a lot of questions. There still so much more to it than this. And with the numerous manufacturers, I could literally do nothing but videos on fish finders. Everyone here is doing well, hope the same on your end. Again, sorry about your freind's situation. Take care, talk to you soon.

    Hi Heath, My friend is destroyed. They've been together since high school. The basics of fish finders was a great video. If fishermen get that right, then they won half the battle. You're right about more videos on fish finders. They are so advanced today with so many features. Thanks, Mickey

    Great learning videos as always, is the signal from transducer down and up (Echo) also gives u the depth? Also would like to know which type of transducer gives u the most depth in saltwater… Thanks again for ur great videos 👍😊

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, the transducer return signal is what shows you the depth. The best transducer is always debateable. I say start out with what would typically come with the fish finder then look for a stronger one that is compatible if you're not satisfied.

    Excellent breakdown for us starters! Can you do a video on sidescan, or do you not used it in open water?

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    Side scan is more of a shallow water, back country, lake or canal thing... I don't find it useful for offshore fishing.

    Do different frequencies show more or less depth?

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Not neccessarily. A lower frequency will take long to produce an image because of the wide range. The higher frequency read the bottom quicker because of the smaller range

    Hey Heath. I am new to your videos and find them extremely entertaining yet very educational too. Regarding the CHIRP that you were discussing and you said the cone size ranges from 21-32 or 11-16, what does the cone size refer to?

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    11 ай бұрын

    The cone size is how wide the signal being sent to the bottom is... i.e. a size 11 cone is smaller than let's say a 16... size eleven gives more detail, where 16 has a wider veiw.... chirp is more help in this aspect because of these multiple cones sizes giving you both detail and wider scope of veiw at the same time.

    Great class. I have a raymarine axiom with a hull transducer and another one on the back by the engines. Pretty decent set up , not top of the line but mediocre . System has 3d vision, side view, etc. Depth reading always disappears around 300ft regardless of wave conditions or speed of boat. Any suggestions on settings from you or anyone out there is appreciated, I just can't get any image/ reading when I get to the humps in the florida keys.

  • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

    Try setting your depth to auto read... those humps are 400-500 it should pick them up if your are in idle.

    It''s not the fish finder... it's the transducer that needs to read the ground fast enough. From my understanding SIMRAD is the best on the market right now.

    I've always had Garmin... because of its GPS which I find to have high end bathymetry compared to the rest of the market... but I also am a huge fan of Simrad especially with what is called CMOR mapping.
