Fish - A Gentleman's Excuse Me & Lavender (Live in Poland. 1997)
Imagine being in a Holiday Inn somewhere (next to the PA Turnpike?) for this story about the one who got away. - Fish It was always L for Lavender. It was all the most exciting L's, except for one, but we're finished dancing...
Can't you see it's hard for me, can you see what I am trying to say? It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side. Can you get it inside your head I'm tired of dancing?
I know you still like old fashioned waltzes, your reflection in the mirror that you flirt with as you glide across the floor, but if I told you the music's over would you want to hear, that your dance card is empty that there's no-one really there?
For every one step forward we're taking two steps back. It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side. Can you get it inside your head that from this one step forward there's no turning back?
We're finished dancing.

Years ago, in the 90's, I was driving home and there was an announcement that Fish would be playing at a local pub. I live in Cape Town, South Africa, and apartheid had just ended. We were starved of international acts, and very few local people knew who Marillion was. Even though I thought I had misheard, a friend of mine and I went down to the pub and bought a drink. The band playing was a local band, and there were no signs advertising a massive star was playing that night, so we thought I'd heard wrong, but decided to finish our drinks. We got chatting to a couple of Scottish guys sharing our table - they wanted to know all the essential tourist venues in Cape Town. After about forty minutes, they stood up and said "well, got to go sing for our supper". That's when I realised we'd been talking to Fish and his guitarist. There were about 200 people, maximum, in Bertie's Landing, and we heard Fish sing all the great Marillion songs. My friend and I could not believe our luck.

Still great in 2023.
Saw him 2 years ago in Nürnberg Hirsch... Was a awesome experience... Then he and his band played misplaced childhood... And all the crowd is going mad... Best concert ever... Thnx Derrek
Whenever you´re feeling sad and think your hopes are gone, remember to watch this video to warm your heart and carry on. Is good to be alive to hear Fish and the beauty of his music.

Fish is one of a kind. Just fantastic. ❤👍
Emozione intensa , gocce che scendono dagli occhi...grazie, consolazione in questa cloaca di musica del terzo millennio e guerre e paesi che non fanno nulla per rendere lieve le vite. Non possono che scendere lacrime dagli occhi...
Suberb Lavender version. Awsome guitar solo
Fish in Poland, incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I listen to this, with tears in my eyes. This is music, which you activate and you realize, how your mind and personality are put together. If you can not appreciate this, you are a poor person. This is timeless and divine.

Lucky enough to have worked a few gigs with him on the Vigil Tour in 90.. Sound Musician and one GREAT album,,,, not a bad note anywhere on that gem! Thanks for the memories DWD!.... Great memories in particular of the homecoming show at the RAH!!!!
This song still cause my heart to ache....20 years and 4 children was not enough for her....no longer did we dance with love or passion...just simple need was no longer enough...I sent the Orchestra on their way...now Lavender still causes hope....and perhaps a new dance partner, or perhaps the music will be playing to an empty dance hall forevermore.

Possibly the best youtube video ever. I caught fish ye know years after in Whelan's in dublin a few years back. He managed to hug the whole crowd, apart from me. Love. K

Master of all classes, Onkel Fish!!
fair move Steve Hogarth! for playing the piano on this video :-)
Cada vez hay menos romanticos, genios del pasado, musica especial para los oidos que trankiliza y hace la sensatez en los humanos. Belleza musical= ARTE.
brings tears to your eyes
You can hear in his voice he was starting to struggle and that it was damaged by then, which is probably the cruelest joke to one of the greatest singer/songriters who ever lived. Robin Mickey and Stevie look like babies there! so young!
Achingly beautiful
Piękne solo!
This is a truly beautiful song.
LOVE how he plays Blue Angel right after Lavender...it's like Lavender²
Marillion c'est Fish, Fish c'est Marillion... La vie est ainsi mais........... Love it

Lavenders is one of the most beautyfull song ever, as well as The Perceptions of Johnny Punter. Thanks Derek !
A classic in my eyes.
zo geweldig mooi dit, na 200 keer, nog steeds natte oogjes
Kind of looks like he would kick your head in just for looking at him and then comes out with amazing songs like that, I love it when you get that, I've had friends over the years that could make people cross the street to avoid them, all Mohicans piercings and tattoos lol, but they were some of the nicest people I've ever known, don't judge the book by the cover. This song was played at a recent funeral, that was a bit emotional.
Pure beauty, what a lyricist!!
Merci👍👍✌✌
Ich liebe Fish🤗🤗🤗
This is a nice story. Thank you. I grew up in East Germany. In 1988 Marillion was there for the first time and I couldn't see them. I was in Berlin, but with the Army and was not allowed to see it. I never was at a Fish gig. But Marillion with Hogarth sometimes. I´m at Marillion Fanclub Germany and I´m looking forward to the new, last Fish Album. Hope you was here on YT last weekend to the Couch Convention.
