Thanks for the reminder to keep the walls blank! I had a veteran/20 year 1st grade teacher help me get my new 1st grade room ready last month. I started putting “library rules” posters up in my reading nook to elevate the cuteness and she said “whoaaaa. Don’t put those up yet! You want to do a mini lesson on how to behave in the library, how to treat books, how to be a good reader. You’ll want to model, model, model. Then put the posters up as you talk about and review the rules before even letting them go near your library/reading nook.” So, same point you make in this video. Also, can you do a video on what you cover day 1 of school? My school doesn’t do a meet-the-teacher. My grade level team has given me some getting to know you resources that I will use. I’m just a bit overwhelmed with what all to do day 1, 2, 3, 4. I’d love to hear how your first days go!

I wish that principals would watch this presentation. Some of them expect teachers to have their walls covered and ready to greet students. They forget that a principal is a master teacher and not a master of teachers. Glad to hear that you are back, and thank you for remembering how far you have come.

I am a first year teacher and I am soo excited. I was lucky enough to be hired by the staff that were a part of my final internship!! I’ll be working with kiddos with special needs and my heart is really just full!

Good tip! Kids don’t even know what’s up on the wall and your posters are not functional but just wall art instead. I agree about the word wall....I see word walls up filled with words before school even starts and I know kids probably don’t use it because they don’t know what’s on there. Good reminder for all teachers, not just first years. “Fab friends, fab family” could be our name? Another great video. Didn’t realize how much I missed your videos until you started posting again. 😂😀👍🏾

GREAT, GReat, Great ADVICE! My first year I put all the posters up before the students came to school. Epic fail...just pretty posters on a wall. 😳 Now, I teach it first and then hang it up it in the room. By going through this process I noticed my students refer to the anchor charts often in the classroom. 😁 I am a 3rd grade teacher and noticed throughout the test the students would look up where the anchor chart use to hang. (Posters are covered or taken down during state assessments.) Thank you again Ms. May. May you continue to spread your wisdom and knowledge to us ALL!❤

Girl, we don't need a regularly scheduled program. We just need YOU! Meanwhile, thank you for this video. I agree, we put a LOT of pressure on ourselves to design pretty rooms but we need a seasoned teacher to explain the purpose for the decor. It's for learning! 😊 It took me a minute to figure that out 'cuz I was all Pinterest-y and I didn't have your online mentoring yet. As for our name, I'm voting for One Fab Family! 💕

This is what I learned from student teaching. In the beginning, your walls will look empty, but as the days go by, all the anchor charts that you teach will eventually fill up all the walls. I've trying to avoid buying any cute posters! 😥 Great video! 👍

First year teacher. Thank you for this video. I'm teaching dual language kindergarten and I've been going crazy trying to decorate and put stuff on my walls. Thank you for reminding me that I'll have 20 little interior designers that will help me get my room together. We can put things up together and that gives it more meaning. Gracias!

You are so on point with those tips. I taught in Jamaica for 18 years and that was something I practiced. I found that the students really make use of anchor charts after the lesson is taught and it's placed on the wall. I have just completed my first year as an international teacher in NC and I felt like I was fresh out of college but thanks to some of your videos I was able to get an insight into this new classroom culture. Thanks for all that you do Miss May❤ [Hugs]

Miss. May you have truly helped me successfully throughout these last two years of my teaching career! I watch your videos to find resources or answers to some of my classroom management tricks and tips! I used your being silent when being interrupted during teaching with my first graders and it worked 😂😂😂🤣, they were looking around so worried and became refocused with no interruptions!. Thank you so much!

Ms. May. I am an aspiring teacher in Houston. Just started my certification process and want kindergarten or first grade. I know I just started and not even teaching yet... but boy am I nervous! But it is a life dream to become a teacher. So glad to have found a local teacher on KZread!
