First Year of CS @ UCL
Ғылым және технология
I've just finished my first year of studying Computer Science at UCL and in this video I share what I learned at university. I show you what my university experience was like, the things that I struggled with and also what I enjoyed.
Modules:
Term 1:
1. Engineering challenges with EEE
2. Design and professional skills (Python, Ethics)
3. Principles of programming (C, Haskell)
4. Discrete maths
Term 2:
1. Object oriented programming (Java)
2. Algorithms and data structures (Python)
3. Theory of computation
4. Maths and statistics
keep moving forward :)

Physics Term2: 1. Statistic and probability 2. Microprocessor 3. OOP with C++ 4. Discrete structure 5. Linear Algebra

It's difficult for me to say, as I started programming a few years before uni. Some of my friends hadn't done any programming before, but if you're dedicated you can pick it up pretty quickly! You will probably have to learn from other sources too, like KZread and codecademy, cause sometimes a concept might not "click" for you in a lesson. You can do it!

Hey there! I think it is possible - you just need to have good time management and be committed. I wouldn't suggest doing a really intensive part time job though, maybe look into tutoring which is flexible and remote, and also jobs around your uni campus. You will probably have to sacrifice going out with friends sometimes, so it's all down to your goals. You got this! PS - nice username 🤣

Hey man. Just got my offer for UCL CS and wondering if you would mind if you shared your notes.
Hey I got accepted into UCL CS and I’m really excited to start soon. I’ve didn’t take CS for GCSEs and A-levels but I have been using sources like CS50 and codeacademy. Do you have any recommendations to help me prep for CS in UCL?

What A levels did you take and what grades did you get? Do you have any advice on getting in? I’m in year12 rn
@zafaris
Жыл бұрын
Hey Oliver! This might be a bit of a long reply 😅 At A levels, I took Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and I managed to get 4 A*s. For UCL CS, Maths is required and Further Maths is recommended. The other 1/2 subjects could be anything really. I guess Physics or CS are pretty good ones to take, and Chem was completely irrelevant. If you are applying for Computer Science, I would suggest you start learning programming now, as it will help you tremendously. Also there are loads of great free online resources to learn coding (eg. CS50, KZread, Codecademy, Freecodecamp). Once you get more familiar with coding, I would highly recommend you start building your own personal projects. They don't have to be huge or amazing, but this way you'll have a head start and can start building up a GitHub portfolio. At the end of the day, UCL is going to look at your A level grades and your Personal Statement. Aim for the highest A level grades you can achieve, but that's only the first step! All the stuff I've mentioned before, you can add to your personal statement, as well as anything else you've done in the past. Ask your teachers for help with your personal statement, to make it the best that you can. Finally, I would suggest joining the r/sixthform discord and other similar channels related to computer science and UCL, so that you can connect with like-minded people and ask them for guidance as well. Please reply if you have any more questions and I will try my best to answer them. Hope this helps! Imaad :)

Hi! I’m currently a Year 11 student, and I want to apply to some top unis like Cambridge and UCL for BSc CS. For my A-Levels I’m planning to take Physics, Maths, Further Maths and IT. Are these A-Levels a good combination? I’ve also started to learn programming in Python, C++ and HTML.

I dont know much about UCLs undergrad compscience until I saw this video, (great video btw). But as a postgrad, I strongly deter anyone from taking the Finance degrees in Compscience. The structure is very poor, and the teaching is even more messy. Although the professors are highly qualified, their pedagogical skills are left wanting; if you truly want to learn something rather than just achieve some prestige from the degree offered, I highly recommend you search elsewhere.
