FIRST YEAR AT AUCKLAND MEDICAL SCHOOL as a Postgraduate Student in New Zealand - Recap Video

In this video I discuss the highs and lows, and surprises about Auckland Medical School & studying in New Zealand, from a postgraduate student's perspective.
Since this is my first KZread video and opening of this channel I also introduce my interest in science communication and my desire to make information readily accessible for all, in this space.
Apologies for the audio issues in the intro! Will be fixed in later videos.

your awesome. thanks for that. I left school at 15 years old, had no formal school education, did drugs and alcohol for 14 years, slowly sorted myself out in the last few years, i did a pre tertiary course and passed that with a A average then got into a nursing degree which i just finished this year and got a A minus average which has put me on the waiting list for the first year Biomed next year. If im accepted i may have a chance to get into medicine which would be crazy because of my past. The MCAT and interview gets me bit nervous as get anxiety at times and my english is not as good as most school leavers due to leaving school so early but maybe i can prove myself with enough hard work next year if i get accepted. Be cool if i could get in contact with u to ask some questions which could help me a bit. Im from hamilton and going to auckland next year would be a big move like what you went through.

Hi there! I don't even know where to begin. This story! Good on you for turning your life around and shooting for the stars. The MCAT is study-able however the interview requires a little more practice. Hopefully can do a video on it and if our paths crossed, would definitely be keen to help out where possible. Embrace the big move; it could be the beginning of the rest of your life! Wishing you all the best & arohanui :)

I really love this vid! I'm a FYHS student in UOA and right now I'm gathering a lot of info on first-year med students. I'm extremely nervous about the UCAT and the interviews. I feel like there's so much going on in first year just to prepare. it's pretty crazy realising that Otago does do interviews but I assume your overall grade is derived more on the UCAT if you're missing out on interviews. thank you so much for this video, you're amazing!!!

Thank you so much! I’m so glad! Otago definitely puts more weight on the UCAT. It’s hard not to be nervous, but don’t worry, as the year progresses, you’ll get more information!

When you can tackle the year the smart way, you get results you deserve without living as a walking breathing stress bag for 10 months. And it isn’t about effort. In nearly 10 years of helping thousands of students enter medical school, we’ve found that trying hard is not the solution. Sometimes you just do the wrong thing harder. Hey, just discovered you! Your amazing 🤩 I was just wondering what the requirements to get into med school under grad after completing first year health sciences straight out of school? Thanks in advance xx appreciate it

Hey there! So the requirements vary. You need to achieve a certain UCAT score and certain average GPA for the year. I recommend looking at last years thread for otago or Auckland, on the site “Med Students Online.” It will give you an idea. But it can be anxiety provoking! So don’t stress too much! All the best.

Hey there, I live in Auckland and I’m wanting to become a doctor when I’m older and hoping you can help me. Ive got some questions… How hard is it to become a doctor? Is it achievable? What do I need to do to become a doctor? Do I need to get straight a’s every test when I’m at college? Is there any tips or tricks? What are the lowest standards in school you need to be at to become a doctor? What can I start now to help my chances to become a doctor? If you can help me it’d be greatly appreciated!!

Hi there! Apologies for the late reply. I'd recommend you check out some of my other videos or even my Instagram. I think just speaking to some people who are doing the career you're interested in, is a good start. The things that make people great doctors are not their intelligence, it's who they are as people. So that's probably my advice!
