Speaking of when I mentioned JustSomeGuy- he shared about the letters his family had from Tolkien as an example to bring home other points. I think it was regarding ROP which his voice essentially is the same opinion regarding that series. His family were one of many who were correspondents with JRR Tolkien. - He often talks about LOTR stuff while playing really well known LOTR online war games, heck, you can even create your own character and immerse yourself in middle earth via LordOfTheRingsOnline where it’s free roaming. You can even interact with several people. Commence various role plays together if you wish, some have very unique dwellings and such from previous events and whatnot too. It’s been around for several decades now.

Good Morning Flo. I discovered LOR while at sea in the Navy 50 years ago. Imagine being stuck on a ship for months without trees or mountains, then stepping into this fantasy. It even gave me the best of dreams. I believe every crew member in my department read these. Anyway, I’m looking forward to this journey with you.❤

Aww thank you for sticking with me for this BTS journey. I wasn't sure whether it would be interesting enough to keep the interests of others, but I'm having a blast! I find the fact that you were fortunate enough to discover the LOTR while at sea to be mind-blowing. I mean, my goodness gracious, what a way to be introduced to the LOTR realm. And the idea that it was a part of the collective consciousness of your entire crew at the same time in the same space is just beyond great. Thank you for sharing that with us. I'll be smiling at that thought for the rest of this week for sure 🥰❤️

This Hobbit was published first, many of its references was to his 25 other books came first; compiled from writings still being discovered. Another book just got published within this last year or two called The Hoard. As it explains more and gives context to things like the fall of Doriath, the OG heart of middle earth and huge portion of the elvish population. And how the sons of Fëanor and their own armies even made it through all the terrain that was impossible for everyone else to even reach plus such a trek was also a very long and arduous one. The details of Doriath’s natural and enhanced defences were already known to us so this new book clears up many things including this. ❤️

I'm so glad you're reacting to these. For me, the extras were just about as exciting as the films. And I had never read the books when I saw Fellowship, but as soon as I got out of the theater I started, and three days later I finished the whole trilogy. Completely obsessed. And it's so gratifying to see how basically everyone working on these things were just as obsessed I was.

It's a tribute to Peter Jackson and his crew that his film adaptation of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) has nearly as great an impact and is touching so many viewers as the books do. I've read the books about half a dozen times from the mid-1970's through the early 1990's. I always find something new. I was actually forced to start "Fellowship" because it was required reading in my Freshman English Class (High School). I wasn't interested in reading it at first - some book about hobbits & elves & wizards - who wants to read about that? But I got swept away almost immediately by the story and the charm of Tolkien's way of writing. It's hard to explain the warm feeling I'd get just reading the book, especially at the beginning and the start of Frodo's journey. So many unknowns at that point, and potential terror. A whole new world to discover that was ancient and fully developed. And Sauron was everywhere and nowhere. The only way I can explain the beginning is: it was like the warm feeling you'd get reading an old Christmas tale, or looking at a beautiful Christmas tree with presents next to a glowing fireplace. Since we'd started reading "Fellowship" in the fall semester, we matched the timeframe of the Unexpected Party, and the start of Frodo's journey in late September. So, for re-readings, I'd always start on Sept. 22 so I could experience them at the same time of year as Frodo's travels. Reading the books is almost a biblical experience. And when "The Silmarillion" came out in 1977, it went to #1 with over a million hard copies sold immediately, and I snatched up a copy as soon as I could find one. If you're really into Tolkien, it's a wonderful book - sort of like the Bible of Middle-Earth. It's not a novel, although there are some very good (and tragic) individual stories - of the Creation, the Valar and Maiar (Gandalf was a Maia), the holy Two Trees, the Silmarils which forever captured the light of the Two Trees, Beren and Luthien (story similar to Aragorn and Arwen only 6-7,000 years earlier!), the Fall of Gondolin, Earendil the Mariner (remember the Phial of Galadrial? "May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out." It had some of the light of the Silmarils, although even IT wouldn't shine in Mt. Doom, Sauron's mountain), the story of Numenor in the Second Age, and its downfall due to Sauron's influence, and more backstory Of The Rings of Power And The Third Age. One other interesting thing: Tolkien's world of Middle-Earth is so fully fleshed out with its many languages, races, geography, geology, botany, and history, that when the books were released and at various times afterwards Tolkien would say that he didn't actually write LOTR, he'd just transcribed the story from an unearthed copy of an ancient book discovered at some archeological site in England. The book was called The Red Book of Westmarch. I think most people knew he was kidding, but given the huge depth of information and history of Middle-Earth, it gave some pause to wonder at his statement. He obviously had a sense of humor!

Omg...thank you so much for leaving this comment. I'm growing quite fond of hearing other people's stories of their first encounters with the LOTR. The fact that "Fellowship of the Ring" was required reading for you is just priceless. I wish it was required reading for me in High School. I could've gotten on the LOTR bandwagon much, much, much sooner. Also, let me just say the fact that Tolkien himself "joked" that he found an archeological site in England where he found an ancient book has me smiling from ear to ear. I keep saying it feels like the vivid memory of an actual past life or something. I appreciate you sharing that with me. I feel like even Tolkien knows that what he has created was just too off-the-charts extraordinary so he has humbled his contribution in the funniest way. I just keep loving him more and more. Thanks again and have a good evening. 😊

I m so glad that you would like to read the books :) I hope they would give you as much joy, food for thought, inspiration to create, and good memories of time spent in fans company (over a pint too) :) as they gave me through the years. I m sure there are many Tolkien fans with whom I can share a feeling that I got after finishing the book (not once, but between 1993 and 2003 I've read it like 12 times), it was a kind of feeling of uttermost but silent joy (Tolkien calls it the effect of 'eucatastrophe' - which is a special kind of "happy end" in fearytales - eucatastrophe has big part in his "theory of literature") and feel of ensurety that I m on the Light Side of Force lets say it that way :) and that those who could be united by sharing this world, those who were able to weep with Frodo and to fight with Gandalf and to love with Beren and Luthien, and to stand with Finrod Felagund who stood against Dark Lord singing about endurance - you know we are friends forever, we are kind of spiritual friends and there are hundreds of milions of us around this darkened, barbaric world. And though "Our kingdom - a distant light" :) thanks to old J. R. R. T. we can always share a common dream of homeland, and this homeland is the Shire. :) And it was a moment of clarity, like oh, so its already all granted, and we are in a God's fanfic (we are sub-creators of fanfics from God's creation - this was Tolkien's explanaition about human need for creating fictional worlds) so nothing to fear, for this world is only a mundane shadow of the other, real world, the world of joy, adventure, honor and splendor :) I never was a particular happy person but to this day I can re-create this first feeling I got that day when I finished the book as this stupid, lonely, pampered, living without goal, egocentric teenage girl who at this moment understood, that was the thing I m going to serve (or rather the ideals Tolkien put in his stories) and after P. Jackson (as some critics said - "Pete Jackson - a madman with a torch") movies came Tolkien fans became my people and the books and movies are "the songs of my people". Through this fantasy universum I want to serve the Light - despite my ethical and theoretical, and political problems with any and all of institutional religions. :) Thats my very personal story - as one of milions of us, forever in debt to the Professor :)
