First Wash Ferrari 355 GTS: Detailing The Best Ferrari Ever?!

Go to www.squarespace... to get a free trial and 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. This is a 1995 Ferrari 355 GTS getting its first wash in years since it was imported from Europe. The 355 is my favorite Ferrari but known to have issues with sticky buttons, leather peeling, and difficult maintenance. I give the 355 a thorough powerwash before diving into the paint correction. The interior also gets a full rejuvenation before we take this beast for an epic drive. Stay tuned for the owner reveal as he explains why this car has weird etchings on the glass. Enjoy!

Hi, I'm from the UK. Window etching did become a thing because of car theft, but not of the windows. In the UK and Europe, a car has a registation number plate for life. If all the windows were etched with the registration, stealing it and just putting false plates on was not possible. However, I never saw etching that large.

Also from the UK, and +1 for this. W is the year 2000 though, so if they stopped making the 355 in 1999 then this example was either late registered as new, or imported to the UK from mainland Europe in 2000. If there is another etched number, it would be interesting to see what it was. I assume the service history will tell all.

Hard to believe the owner thinks it's for theftprotection of the windows themselves, but one shouldn't be surprised. This F355 was brought over from Europe and repainted, the owner claims the number is somehow part of the VIN. I wonder what happens if you run "AAU 87W" through Europols stolen veihicle database .

Thank you for the shout out and link. It’s important to note that cleaning parts doesn’t provide a good finish and often will result in loss of graphics. At Sticky RX, we do not clean any parts. We full strip them to bare metal or plastic and fully refinish with hard touch coating and laser etch all graphics. We use the best automotive interior coatings on the market and not generic materials.

In 2005 I was driving up the Pacific Coast Highway on my BMW R100S motorcycle when I pulled up to a red light in Malibu with a light blue 355 next to me. Light turned green, the driver let it rip, and I followed suit. For about 10 minutes we flew down the most incredible road in the country, switching leads, just enjoying the ride. When we finally got to a stoplight in Oxnard, he leaned over and said ‘thanks for being able to keep up’. Like he was searching for a match. I’ll never forget it.

My favorite part of the detail, other than the finished product, is the initial vacuum, it's almost a milestone and lets you see what really needs to be done to the interior of the vehicle without all the crazy distractions. I don't like inside windows but I'm a window freak who's always trying to perfect the craft of the "fishbowl effect" in every car I touch. It's going well lol. Great video, love the Ferrari!

355 is the greatest sounding and one of the greatest driving cars of all time. The engine is a true masterpiece with its 5 valve head, titanium connecting rods, titanium valves, dry sump and on. This engine and the F50 engine share much in their design and remain the only street cars to run a 5 valve design. 355 also had the record for specific power output at the time at 108hp/liter beating even the McLaren F1. The 355 will go down as an all time great Ferrari and they are even better in person than video. So special

completely agree with you, Larry, on the 355. I've been priviledged to own but one Ferrari and it was a 355 Berlinetta/6-speed. The styling is flawless and a 3.5L engine with a flat plane crankshaft, 5 valves per cylinder, titanium connecting rods make music (when a Capistro exhaust is attached) that is not unlike that of period F1 cars...especially at the 9,000 rpm redline! The every 3-years or 15,000 mile cam belt/water pump/tensioner change necessitated a motor drop and accompanying huge bill that did me in after 5 years of ownership.

My very first professional detail was a disastrous "sticky dash" situation. Everything from A-pillar covers to entire dash, steering wheel, center console and door cards was covered in this mess. I did a ton of research and everything failed miserably until I tried IPA and steam. It did come at a cost though as some of the dye on the plastic was removed in the process. But this was a highly neglected barn find and we all knew it was going to happen.

As a detailer my favorite part of cleaning is when I do a buff or a polish on faded paint as it makes a really big difference or doing a headlight restoration. My least favorite is cleaning the interior as I had to clean some pretty grimy stuff that took forever and with a lot of elbow grease. But yeah i love exterior detailing, not too big on interior detailiing.

I would be willing to bet that vehicle spent time in Venezuela under previous ownership. The window etching matches 90s number plate nomenclature, and we did etching so large because when they stole vehicles, they covered small etchings with stickers. The etchings were made to identify vehicles with VINs and numberplates to avoid vehicle theft, not parting them put. People would, in fact, do full door or roof VIN number decals (20" long) and spray clear coat over them just to avoid their vehicles being stolen

The best glass cleaner I've ever used on a car is technically for stained glass work. I do a lot of stained glass and also love detailing cars. The stuff I use is called "Clarity Stained Glass Finishing Compound". I've used it for years. I do an initial clean with iso alcohol, (if really dirty/buggy) then go over it with the Clarity. It dries to a haze, then you just wipe it off with a micro-fiber towel. No streaks, ever! Highly recommend giving it a try. Maybe other brands of finishing compound are just as good, that's just the one I've used. Love the videos, Larry. Looking forward to the day when you can work on an old C4 corvette.

Correct. Ordering a full set of windows for a car is easy to trace, and expensive. So the thieves would have to order them piece by piece over months of time to avoid suspicion, but then they'd have to store a stolen car for that time. So the cost plus the traceability plus the risks involved, makes it a good deterrent. But yes, it's ugly, but also, it's very easy to check by police if the etching is off from the license plate.

That plate is an old Venezuelan plate. Three letter digits at the beginning, two numbers and a letter at the end. Here we have this culture of etching the windows because car theft has always been a major crime. Maybe it's just my speculation about the license plate but the similarity resonates a lot with me, also because few people in Europe do that to a Ferrari.

All parts which could be stolen have marks like that - tattoos :) what a gr8 part of history :) In Germany they use to tell "go travel visit Poland, your car is already there" ;) The same as we were telling that All cars stolen in Poland are already in Russia now ;) it's been 30 years, a lot changed - but even now those "tattoos" are visible on a European cars :) Greeting from Poland !

The 355 is definitely one of my favorite Ferrari's alongside the 550 Maranello. If I ever win in a lottery and decide to spend big money on a car, it will be difficult decision between Diablo, 355, 550 and 205 T16.

Sticky buttons is also common issue on MB W210. Dads 2002 E430 has ruined sticky buttons on the steering wheel.

You can't do much once the 'halo' starts to show. You end up chasing it away and its just gets worse and worse. Its a no lose situation that only a repaint of the panel can fix. Good job finding it Larry.

I have a love hate relationship with wheels. I’d have to agree, glass is the worst but i think detailing floor matts/pedal box is my favorite. Engine bay is right up there with my favorites as well

The window etching should match the number (licence) plate. If a car was checked and the two did not match the car might be stolen. Unusual to have a different number etched on though - possibly VIN? - and it was never usually that big so probably aftermarket on that Ferrari. Great looking car!

A friend has a modern Civic Si that has the etching on the windows; it was an additional dealer cost to get it removed

I'm with you. I could spend an hour vacuuming dirty nasty carpets, dripping sweat and fatiguing my arms over spending 10 minutes wiping down glass. Cleaning glass is my worst part of detailing a car.

15:46 - cleaning my wheels is the best. My truck is all black and the wheels start to get a faded brown look when they get dirty. Once they're clean again they are a shiny black and Ammo Mud is the best looking tire shine I've used.

Long time watcher of your content and I love it as I take away tips and tricks for my detailing here in Adelaide, South Australia.😊 Something I noticed.. You torqued the wheel nuts while the vehicle was on the ground. You should have the vehicle off the ground to torque the nuts as there is no vehicle weight applied allowing you to correctly apply tension. Your handbrake will hold the rear but the footbrake must be applied for the front wheels. Not criticising just mentioning for safety.👍

I had the pleasure to be ripping one of these down the highway. Beautiful car. The owner said he was having issues with the gated shifter. I told him he needed to drive it harder. LOL
