Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and is the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Jon Watts, written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire. In the film, Parker asks Dr. Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) to make his identity as Spider-Man a secret again with magic, but it breaks open the multiverse and allows five supervillains from alternate realities to enter Parker's universe.
A third MCU Spider-Man film was planned during the production of Homecoming in 2017. By August 2019, negotiations between Sony and Marvel Studios to alter their deal-in which they produce the Spider-Man films together-ended with Marvel Studios leaving the project; however, a negative fan reaction led to a new deal between the two companies a month later. Watts, McKenna, Sommers, and Holland were set to return at that time. Filming began in October 2020 in New York City, before moving to Atlanta later that month and wrapping at the end of March 2021. No Way Home explores the concept of the multiverse and ties the MCU to past Spider-Man film series, with numerous actors-including previous Spider-Man actors Maguire and Garfield-reprising their roles from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb-directed Spider-Man films. Maguire and Garfield's return was the subject of intense speculation, and Sony and Marvel attempted to conceal their involvement, despite numerous leaks.
Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered at the Fox Village Theatre in Los Angeles on December 13, 2021, and will be released theatrically in the United States on December 17, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The film received acclaim from critics and audiences, with praise for the performances and chemistry of the cast, emotional weight, cinematography, action sequences, visuals, direction, villains, screenplay, musical score, character development, and fan service.

Just gonna jump ahead of the comments here (it's going to be insane) and say, I'm still not considering this a review so much as a massive discussion. I'm still rather undecided on this film and intend to give it a rewatch. It certainly has its flaws and big ones at that but I think a rewatch will determine just how much they bug me, and how much they impact the experience the second time around. While watching the film, I was thrilled to bits and all of my criticisms only really surfaced once the credits began. This isn't really a backpedal but to say, I still don't think I can give a fully fair assessment on this one, even with all that's been said. Do I recommend it? 100%. Do I look forward to rewatching it? 100%. Did I enjoy watching it when I did? 100%. It's a wild ride, I won't pretend it isn't and by no means the worst Spider-Man film. I guess it's tricky to give an immediate judgement of a film that is so divorced from traditional storytelling and so committed to delivering a satisfying conclusion to 3 stories that were never intended to overlap. I do ask that people in the comments do be mature about my criticisms. By all means tell me if I'm speaking in bad faith, but you don't need to go so far as to attack people in defence of a film that's proving popular and is probably going to make more money than any of us will ever see in our lifetimes. Just, hear each other out and be cool. It's a discussion not a fight. Aight, Pup out.

The way you fix this flat hole is really simple. Literally just go with the fact that these are variance and not the exact one to one translated versions of the Spidermen and villains we saw in those previous movies. these are from variant universities of those universities were things happen very similar but slightly different to fit the story and in resolution. It makes everything makes sense and it makes everything click together for the most part

Doc Ock may still die as to stop the Machine, but Norman means he won’t die, Harry never becomes New Goblin, and the whole timeline changes. Electro may not die either.

Do they go back with their memories intact or do they get their memories wiped and continue on in their universe as if nothing happened? I think the not talking to MIT before makes sense with this characterization, this Peter is extremely impulsive, that's been constant since all his movies, going to germany in Civil War, then the whole thing with trying to get into the Avengers in Homecoming, then giving the glasses to Mysterio in FFH, and then this movie, just getting the idea to go to strange and then going immediately. MJ even points this out to him in this film, to workshop his ideas with them first.

It did not take years for Doctor Strange to use the sling ring. In fact it's explained that the slng ring is one of the most basic forms of magic that beginners learn. They also say that all it takes is the ability to believe and visualize where you want to go. The only reason strange struggled with it was because he couldn't commit to believing because he was a man of science and needed an explanation. Ned ironically in believing that he already was magic had an easier time using the ring. Not to mention that the ring itself is a magical artifact meant to make conjuring portals easier. It makes sense.

This movie is a pseudo-sequel to Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a live-action Spider-Verse, the branch between the Netflix MCU and the movies, and the follow-up to Far From Home. Doc Ock, Electro, and Green Goblin are given a lot of respect. Lizard and Sandman are cool. And then all three Spider-Men are handled pretty well. This is all at the expense of a pretty dumb plot that doesn't exactly make sense, like at all actually. And if you think about it at really any capacity, oof. It just doesn't make sense. So if kind of a bad plot ruins a movie for you, then it'll be ruined for you. But if you can overlook that sort of thing, you'll have a lot of fun. One thing I will say about the plot is the ending actually made me depressed in a really good way. It was fucking awesome. And the Aunt May scene. Truly amazing. Ever since the trailer I've been disappointed over the CGI Goblin mask and now the Spidey masks, still incredible to see the Raimi suit back on screen. It's going to be interesting to see the behind-the-scenes for this one, seeing a lot of people are convinced that they reused footage of Sandman in his human form from Spider-Man 3. I'm with you in that Peter should've been portrayed better in regards to calling MIT, and I really don't think Doctor Strange got the right treatment here. But it was great to see Peter help out Otto and using math to problem solve. He's been much more of a bumbling idiot in previous films, but this felt like more of a Peter Parker love letter. Good to see him land a solid movie kiss as well, and a beautiful score by Giacchino in that scene especially. It moved me almost as much as his score for Rogue One did.

The stuff with Peter at the beginning, he's a teenager undergoing a hell fna lot of stress and hardships, I can believe him being frantic and itrational, many fuooy grown aduota would do the same. With the ending, it goes into things Peter was being there is earlier in the film, about him having to make a choice between being Spider-Man and his personal life. It's also foreshadowed quite well with the other Spider-Men mentioning their personal losses, Uncle Ben, Harry, Gwen. By the end, MCU Peter has also lost his equivalent to those things, albiet not by death. What does he do? He follows the other Peters' advice, he carries on best he can. I also feel his situation is one thag a lot of the kids who have followwd him all these years can now relate to. School is over, you're entering adult life with many of your safety nets gone. Even friends you knew can end up drifting away. It can he scary and lonely. That's just the feeling those melancholy shots in his dingy flat at the end reminded me of. Can't really cover everything I feel here but one last point. Why do the Venom scene? Becsuee Kevin Feige has earned the right to troll. Yeah, I would have been curious about them meeting, but I'm more excited by the prospect of well done Black Suit and Venom arc on the big screen, something I'd given up hope for.

Like you said, this film really confused me about Uncle Ben in the MCU, because in CW he says "when you can do the things that I can, but you don't. And then the bad things happen, they happen because of you" which is just power and responsibility, then HC and FFH reference him and his presence is felt multiple times and What if name drops him. Even Watts and Feige themselves have said Ben does exist. So why does Peter not seem too familiar with the power and responsibility. What makes it even weirder is that, when Tobey and Andrew mentied their Uncle Ben's Tom's Peter doesn't even relate saying he lost his or anything. So if he wasn't familiar with power and responsibility (which he was) why was he using his power to help people in the first place? I don't mind if they have May give him the official power and responsibility speech instead of Ben because in the original comics no one taught Peter anything, he figured it out on his own so I don't really care if they switch it to May, but it's just confusing on the implications on Ben, hopefully Freshman year will explain it. Also one of my biggest worries came true which was they wouldn't explore Peter trying to live a normal life that much and just get straight to the multiverse. Don't get me wrong what they showed was exceptional but I feel it was too quick. I also feel we didn't really need Sandman and the Lizard in this film at all they felt really pointless they were cool don't get me wrong, but they should have removed them and used those minutes to further explore Goblin and electro imo. Aside from those imo it was absolutely a dream come true, the whole story of Tom's Spidey slowly becoming THE Spider-Man through out the trilogy was finished so perfectly setting up a trilogy in college with Tom being a far more traditional Spider-Man. I'm so glad I loved this version from the start and was able to love this entire journey he goes on because its been amazing to watch a Spider-Man actually grow into the hero he's supposed to be rather than just be that hero from the get go. Also I loved the mid credit scene leaving the opportunity to do Spider-Man v Venom properly instead of forcing 2 series together just to fight for a quick buck.

They way I see it is that MCU Spider-Man's origin is more like the comics where Uncle Ben never said the line, he learned it himself. I'm going to guess Tom Holland's Uncle Ben did used to say that a lot, and it was something his Aunt May took to heart before passing it onto Peter at the end. The bit when Peter and Happy at May's grave and him talking about as long as people carry what she stood for on then it will continue to live on. I think May was doing that for Ben in her work at F.E.A.S.T.., and now it's passed on to Peter as Spider-Man. And I think it's less redeeming and more if they don't have powers and are back to normal they can't fight Spider-Man, and if they can't fight Spider-Man they can't die fighting Spider-Man. And if it helps them out in other ways that's a big bonus too. Still leaves Doc Ock to be screwed over tho. Maybe Norman surviving can effect things enough to save Ock later on. Who knows.

Funny thing about Uncle Ben is that in the original run of the comics Uncle Ben never said with great power comes great responsibility, a narration textbox does. Meaning that spiderman never had that lesson spelled out to him he just felt the weight of that responsibility. It's very possible that same thing happened with Tom Holland's Spiderman. He does say something very similar to Tony Stark in Civil War and clearly understands that responsibility but he's never heard the words before until now. We'll just have to see.

Peter's shown a decent bit of responsiblity on a small scale but you could interpret since he started so young as Spider-Man, he did heroics not fully understanding and parts of homecoming and far from home fit that. Peter's obsession with the avengers, wanting to avoid his responsiblity in far from home, add No Way Home and the trilogy as a whole works best as a origin trilogy.

So a few things: Ned figuring out magic fast - I don't have a problem with this. Strange took a long time to figure it out because he didn't really believe in magic OR himself. Ned believes in both, he's much more open minded. It would take him years to get good at it, so I'm fine with natural talent allowing him to be able to open, but not close, portals, and not with a lot of accuracy. The final battle stops for chit chat - really only once. All the jokes and catching up on villains and web shooters happens BEFORE all the villains show up. There's only one break in the action after that, which is when they talk about needing to work as a team. Which, sure, is unrealistic. But it's just kinda how giant third acts work with lots of characters. Everyone goes back to their deaths - Otto probably does. Which is sad, but no one else does. Why bother with stabbing Tobey? To startle you. It's a jump scare, it's fine. tbh we really should've expected the Venom thing, it fits the entire vibe of the venom movies perfectly. The villains get sent home and but survive because they’ve been cured in the MCU. They’re no longer the same versions that were originally taken from the original timelines, so them being sent back creates parallel timelines to that of the Tobey and Andrew films. Tobey and Andrew get sent back to their exact points, because they never changed. Tobey still lives in his original timeline where Norman, Otto, Harry are all dead, but the cured Norman gets sent to a now parallel timeline where he doesn’t become the Goblin anymore. Otto is a tricky one because when he was taken, his machine was already on the flux, so it’s almost safe to say that even though he’s sent to a new timeline, he still experienced the same fate as his original ending. This goes for all the villains. Hope that helps anyone confused!

When they stopped the fight was for a few seconds to talk strategy or when they cure someone. I don't remember stoping just to crack jokes. 2)The idea is that they die "fighting spider-man". So if they get cured they don't fight and so they don't die. If doc Oc returns before his death and he is good he has a few extra seconds or minutes to stop the machine.

About the Aunt May and the responsibility speech: In the comics, it's never actually said by Uncle Ben, or anyone really. It's said by the narrator (Stan Lee). Raimi movies changed that and gave the speech to Uncle Ben, so I'm fine with this. Hell! The saying in the Raimi isn't even the right one. The actual saying is, "With great power, there must also come great responsibility." Not, "With great power comes great responsibility." Edit: Him almost killing Norman is completely in character. In the comics, when Aunt May got by Kingpin's order and was lying at her death bed. Peter hunted down Fisk, humiliated him infront of an entire prison. Beat the shit out of him and almost made him choke on Web Fluid. He then tore down image of invincibility and promised him that if Aunt May dies, then Peter will kill him. And I honestly believe he would have, if May died. And in an alternate universe, where MJ got shot and killed instead of May. Peter killed the shooter and punched a hole through Fisk.

One thing on my mind after the leaving the cinema. So ok, MJ now doesn’t remember Peter is spider-man, but what about things like photos on her phone of them together? Clothes he potentially left at her house, all the little things that she could see that she’d have no idea about. I get that the point is that there’s no going back from this, but given the insanity it would cause that there’s all these pictures and memories of a boyfriend you don’t remember, it’d be nice to just have it acknowledged. I was there wondering why Peter wouldn’t at least show her a picture of the two of them. As I said, I get that it would undo some of the emotional weight and I don’t wanna be those people that drills deep into the tiniest of things (not even gonna call it a plot hole) it’s just something that came to mind.

I love how Marvel duped us by not showing the origin story of Tom Holland'd Spider-Man(making us think that they skipped the Uncle Ben ark), only for us to find out that this iteration of Spidey doesnt have an uncle Ben, and that Holland Trilogy IS the origin story! They really playing 5D chess. ( also its pretty clear that uncle Ben was never involved with Tom's spidey. Because May was supposed to be his Ben.)

I’ve never understood why people think uncle Ben matters SO much. It’s not the character that matters. Like in any way at all. Uncle Ben as a character does not matter, but what does is the lesson he teaches. All Peter needs to learn to be Spider-Man is the whole with great power thing. That’s it.

I mean all respectfully disagree it's fan service and it's fan service and done right and I thought it was a triumphant return of Sam Raimis Spider Man. I think they blended the 3 live action movie version of spider man together in a beautiful cohesive pod that's really about loss and responsibility. Is Peter Parker loses so much in this and has to sacrifice so much in order to protect his friends and family and and it feels like a classic spider man film it's everything that I've ever wanted in the spider man film it ties up all of the loose ends from the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Mcguire error film franchises that ended so abruptly many years ago and I think it's one of the greatest superhero movies of all time and I think it's going to be remembered for many years to come. I wouldn't rate this movie any lower than an 8

21:48 I noticed that in the movie the spider-man were focusing on fixing the villains powers and their personalities. No one ever mentioned in the movie that the time have stopped in the other universes, which means that if they spent a day in the MCU universe, it's also been a day in their universes as well, they were worried that if they return to their universes again with their powers and their evil personalities they were gonna fight spiderman again and die even if time was still moving in the other universes, but if they return after a day with no powers or evil personalities they can still live because they won't fight spiderman. This doesn't really fix all the issues with the movie, but I believe this is the explanation. But because they didn't make it clear where or when the villains gonna be when they go back it became confusing.

I kinda understand why Peter didn't talk or contact MIT bc personally, I'd assume there'd be nothing I could do - that a letter of rejection would be final, especially in Peter's case where he's accused of murder and other international crimes. People don't get hired just based on accusations by a couple people on the Internet, imagine your face being plastered internationally and a dead, seemingly-trustworthy magic man accusing you of being a psychopath.

Then either is that movie or a future movie, he will go and try to track down the original universe it came from and end up meeting countless versions of Venom from throughout the multiverse including the version from Spiderman 3 until he eventually finds Tom Hardy's Venom and they finally meet

I feel like with the cards that the MCU were dealt, this was the best possible outcome. In terms of when the villains were brought in, Doc Ock can be explained relatively easy. He makes it clear that he was choking SpiderMan, which was right after Peter, in SpiderMan 2, suggested that they could shut down the fusion reactor. So my hopes are that, if everything worked, that they were able to shut down the machine in the Raimi-verse and create an alternate timeline there whenever Doc Ock returned. I’ll have to do my research in terms of when the other villains were brought in from their movies. But multiverse stuff is always a mess no matter the circumstances. I enjoyed the hell out of this tho. It was incredible imo

  • 2 жыл бұрын

I think that Doc Ock (the one most at stake) gets to survive because he gets granted the arc reactor as a result of saving Electro. So he gets to override the device via the arc reactor or something.

I feel like uncle ben died probably trying to stop someone like in tasm1 but it wasnt a direct consequence of Peter in any way, so uncle ben could have been more of an inspiration to continue doing the right thing with the powers he has. I feel this also makes what peter says in civil war make more sense that its not just straight up the great responsibility line
