Allergy is a commentary on comparing yourself to other people. Soyeon has said she has had a mirror allergy herself - early in her career she received a lot of hate for her looks and was told she was too ugly to be an idol, and even considered herself ugly (she expressed it on Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar 3). Yes, i know it seems totally crazy but kpop.....

when soyeon was a trainee, people bullied her really really hard, and she was told that she was too ugly to become an idol. she said in the show unpretty rapstar, “it’s not like being ugly is something i can deny.” “i was ugly. i am ugly. i know it already.” she isn’t ‘pretty’ by korean standards so she’s always been a target for hate by k-netizans. so this song was very important to her!

There were also moments in her time in 'Produce 101' where she just wanted to leave. She felt like she didn't belong there due to the way she looks. She felt confident in her voice and words, yes, but she didn't feel confident in her looks which resulted in her self depracating raps in 'Unpretty Rapstars' using that against whoever she went up against.

I always tear up at the end of Queencard. The first time I read the “I Feel You” at the end I actually sobbed. Every girl can relate to the message of Allergy & Queencard. I love Gidle so much 😭

"I feel you" i cry every single time!!

Soyeon has a couple of tattoos, but the butterfly isn't one of them. That was drawn onto her for the video. She has a heartbeat --------/\_____ (bad text picture) on her inner arm to denote that she is an organ donor, and a flower (I think it's a dahlia) on her left shoulder blade. Yuqi has a tattoo of the rear end of a yorkie on her right shoulder blade.

The song is about learning to be happy and comfortable in your own skin. Tattoos tend to be personal commentary on something significant in someone's life, that you want to remember forever. Soyeon had the butterfly tattoo put in the same place as Soojin's Cherry tattoo. She also sports the tell-tale mole under her eye. I like to think it's an homage to Soojin.

Hi! Yeah, wow. There's a lot going on here.... First of all, it's Soyeon. Soyeon has a comprehensive vision and an exhaustive eye for detail, for videos especially, and a willingness to tell her own story. Where to begin? There are a lot of movie/video references in these MVs: White Chicks, Mean Girls and many more. Search youtube; there are compilations showing visual parallels that only take a few minutes to watch and it's really impressive. Second, as others have pointed out, these MVs are broadly autobiographical for Soyeon. Kpop is great, but it is a magnifying mirror for many of the evils of Korean society: lookism, sexism, crushing pressure to succeed, and a toxic internet fandom to point to a few, and Soyeon has had to battle all of it. Not only her looks were attacked early, but also her assertive personality (note the comment she makes when her character goes in for a plastic surgery consult), and her diminutive size (note how her character literally gets put with children in the boutique). So much detail! In the MVs, Miyeon's character is a social media star, but Minnie's character is a bigger social media star--check their earrings. Also, if you look at what's on the phones in Allergy, that 'cute boy' breaks up with Miyeon and starts dating Minnie, which is the trigger for Miyeon's insecurity. Sooo, the 'petty hug' (lol), actually shows Miyeon's character fighting back her jealousy to at least be respectful of Minnie. Then, in the next scene, Miyeon is shown watching Minnie come into the big party (alone!) only to be confronted with the 'local queencards' (White Chicks!), whereupon Miyeon comes to ally with Minnie so that Minnie is not left alone in the dance off. It's important because, I think, Queencard is not just about finding confidence, it's about women coming to identify with and celebrate other women instead of being jealous and competitive, which I suspect is a transition that happened to Soyeon when she became the leader of the disparate group of women who became (G)i-dle. Whew. I must stop. Except...Mamamoo. Mamamoo!! (Hip.) It seems (G)i-dle has impacted you; just wait until you get to know Hwasa. Cheers

There's also a trailer that came out before the mv's that introduces the members' characters. Basically the whole aesthetic of this comeback was 'Netflix Series', Soyeon's way of making her message of not judging everyone by their physique more palatable to the general audience

Awesome! I am so glad you reacted to both in order! GREAT story. The story in these two videos is loosely based on things that have happened to Soyeon on a personal level; she was called ugly when she was a kid. When she was 17 years old, she was giving people vocal beat-downs in underground rapping competitions because the underground stuff happens to ugly people. Her very real skills got somebody else's attention and she wound up on a show called Unpretty Rap Star, where she continued to beat people down on the mic. The thing is, she was the youngest person competing on the show that year (17 years old and still in High School) while most others were above 20. Soyeon just kept giving her opponents brain damage with her raps. She's ABSOLUTELY a BRILLIANT GENIUS and she's QUICK! She freestyles off the top of her head in no time flat. She had all of her OLDER opponents calling HER 'the Scary Unnie', meaning they looked up to her as if she was older than they were because of her sheer skill and her absolute savagery. According to the (REALLY GODDAMNED STUPID) 'Korean Beauty Standard', Soyeon was ugly as a kid. I would like to point out just how toxic that 'Standard' is, if most of the Korean population does not fit into that 'standard, and people have in fact committed suicide because they didn't fit that 'standard' but EVERYBODY over there has been BRAINWASHED to think this is how things should be. Soyeon had actually considered surgery before, simply for being bullied as being ugly (obviously she opted out). But look how she turned out; she's GORGEOUS as-is. And I would also like to point out that people called both Mariah Carey and Julia Roberts 'ugly' when they were each kids. Look how they both turned out. :) Don't let anybody dictate what you are 'supposed' to feel. Especially not the two-faced hypocrites; the absolute ANIMALS who came up with the Korean Beauty Standard also don't fit that standard these days! They are a bunch of wealthy, wrinkly, fat OLD bastards and the KBS is their shared FETISH. Decades ago, they managed to market that fetish and brainwashed everybody into thinking 'this is fine, this is normal, this is how things should be', simply because of their money and reach and power within the Entertainment and broadcast businesses.

The side-to-side arrows will move things five seconds one way or the other. If you want to go frame-by-frame, use the Period key for forward by one frame or use the Comma key for backward by one frame. :)

How come no one has said you look like the character in this? 😅 I always get distracted but then I'm like wait, you both have the long hair and the glasses? But I was so happy when you said she's so cute! ☺An amazing pair of MVs that go together to tell a great story and I most definitely love that you had to pause at the pool scene, it's a great one... and yeah, many of us get a little teary eyed at the end, I think it's part of the whole experience, more so when you have had those thoughts of not being quite enough like some of your peers. But it would be amazing if you could react to my all-time favorite group as well, which is BLACKPINK. They have a special place in my heart and I feel like you would love them too. Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa are just an extraordinary group and also such good soloists. They don't have a single bad song in their discography. It is so painful to me that Soyeon was called "too ugly to be a K-pop idol" when she was a trainee and participated in idol competitions pre-debut. This song and Queencard are Soyeon's rebuttals to those painful experiences.

I’d suggest either turning off the captions if you are the type to only thirst and care about the visuals which is valid but if you’re trying to actually understand the video and show that you’re listening to the song but can’t take in all at the same time, watch the video first without captions then repeat with captions on and focus on the lyrics on the second watch through. That will also probably help with getting views and subscribers. There are times where you’re paused and asking questions but the answer is literally in the lyrics right in front of you in this and all your other reactions. Hope to see you grow as a channel who doesn’t give off “superficially interested” vibes as so many do. *the gay moment is how people are pressured to do gay things for the likes and attention.
