    Well, the Oracle didn't actually predict that Morpheus would die. She told Neo that one of them was going to die (Morpheus and Neo). So, towards the end Neo did die (shot to death by agent smith), and was revived as The One. Great reaction, will definitely make sure to see the future ones by you two.

    One of them did die, Neo. He had to die, to become the one. The Oracle actually says it. She says it’s like you’re waiting for something, Neo says, what, and she replied with your next life maybe, who knows. Neo is an anagram for one by the way.

    It does have a little Sleeping Beauty similarities at the end, but in reality, Neo could still hear Trinity talk (and even feel her kiss), and because of that, he realized that he was in the matrix and nothing is real (even bullets) and woke himself up.

  • @michaelccozens

    @michaelccozens

    That's certainly part of it, but I think it goes a little deeper, too. Notice, for example, that when Neo asks the Oracle if he's "the One", she never actually answers him. Instead, she uses an old mentalist/cold-reading trick of getting him to answer his own question and then presenting his answer as her own ("psychics" do this all the time, which is part of how it can function as therapy for those who "don't do therapy". The South Park episode about John Edwards explains the concept well, as do many episodes of "The Mentalist", which is a very fun crime procedural). If Neo is the One, and can more-or-less create reality within the Matrix as he sees fit, then his belief that he is not the One makes him not the One (this is part of the layer of this movie that's all about identity, and is, in part, explicitly a story about trans identity and discovering your true self despite a society programming you never to do so. Switch was originally specifically a trans character, being a biological male outside the Matrix but her true identity within it, when her mind could digitally express her true sense of self (also why she's the only character dressed in white, instead of black). The studio, however, felt audiences weren't ready for that, and made the Wachowskis leave her as more of an undefined androgynous character. Both Wachowskis, incidentally, transitioned some time after this movie, being trans women, so you can see how this would also be a very personal story for them. One more note on the subject of identity; notice how Agent Smith insists on calling Neo "Mr. Anderson", the identity the Matrix foisted upon him, and how Neo's success against the Agents really began when he insisted on asserting his own identity as his true self ("My name is Neo").) Getting back to Trinity, her faith in Neo's identity as himself and the One supported his own, allowing his resurrection (insert your choice of any number of "messiah" parallels here) and the beginning of the realization of his human potential, which surpassed even that of AI. That was quite a block of text! TL;DR: you can see how many universities created philosophy courses utilizing the Matrix to explore issues like self-awareness ("I think, therefore I am") and identity.

    @@michaelccozens That's interesting about the trans parable... hadn't thought of those details before. Only thing I disagree on is the Oracle, she was definitely a real oracle and not just a "mentalist". She knew the vase would fall before it did, and even suggests that she made it happen by saying it. That's a metaphor for what she says to Neo. The Oracle didn't tell him he was the One... instead her words led to him showing himself to be the One. She got Neo to "break the vase".

    There are multiple layers to the scene where Neo is revived. While the power of love and Trinity's kiss may play a role, there are also deeper thematic and narrative elements at play, including destiny from the prophecy, Neo's self-awareness and mind power, and religious allegory.

    This is very similar to the structure of the Back to the Future series in that the first was a stand alone film which was very successful and was followed up with 2 cleverly crafted films which didn't hurt the first but added to the experience. Sometimes studio greed pays off if the effort is put in. Most of the time we're lucky to get 1 good sequel but 2 is rare.

    I was just thinking the end of this movie is exactly like Back to the Future. They both end on a huge high note, perfect "sequel bait" even if BTTF wasn't intentional. They both end with the main characters flying into the sky -- straight toward the camera. Something that didn't happen until that very moment. Its amazing how similar they are actually.

    All of the other movies are worth watching. The first three movies are one, long story. It's clear that it was all written at once, and then just filmed in three parts because it was so big. The fourth movie is kind of a reboot, kind of a follow-up. It's kinda obviously not part of the original story, it's clear it wasn't planned from the beginning, but it also benefits from 20 years worth of improvements in writing, graphics and acting talent so it's also really good.

    The movie is intentional confusing in the beginning. It's almost in medias res. When I saw it, I thought hovercraft meant hover on water like hydrofoils. It means hover in air, flying. The Machines are said to get their power from human metabolism. Where they get the food is a paradox. If you get serious of instead of just accept the rules of the movie fantasy, it violates thermodynamics. There's also The Animatrix which tells how the war between humans and Machines started, and the origins of the Matrix. Also a few comic books. I like Hugo Weaving as Tick in Priscilla. It's a wonderfully different role for Terence Stamp. Matrix 2 and 3 are a duology. They are overall similar to this movie; they continue what happens after Neo flies off the screen; it also talks more about the themes of the movie. Matrix 4 came out years later. It is controversial. I like it but I'm strange. Remember most of the time the characters have duality: their physical body in jelly pod or the interface chair and their avatars in the machine generated Matrix fed fake perceptions through their neck jack. And sometimes their bodies in the Real World getting perceptions through their hunan senses.

    An idea packed, often brilliant, often inexplicable trilogy (YT channel 'Cracked' has a breakdown). But do not waste time with the fourth Resurrections. Channel 'Lextorias' has a very sound hypothesis; Lana W. agreed to direct, but mainly to scuttle Warner Bros. plot to exploit the trilogy for more films - possibly a bomb; on purpose. - Andrew Mackenna, Christchurch, NZ

    To answer ur questions: When the A.I. machines went to war w/ the humans, they relied on solar energy... So, the humans scorched the sky to rob them of their source of energy. However, the machines realized that humans could be harvested for the energy they generated through their bodies. As a result, the machines started harvesting humans for their power plants to generate power to survive... Human beings are kept alive in their pods by liquifying the dead bodies w/ biological nutrients and feeding them intravenously to the living. The Matrix was a virtual reality designed to keep the enslaved humans in check by trapping their minds in that reality, living virtual lives while their bodies were trapped in a power plant generating electricity for the A.I. machines... As Agent Smith revealed, human minds rejected the original 'perfect world' Matrix... so, it was redesigned to be acceptable to the human minds that were enslaved within it. The question is... how many times was the Matrix 'redesigned'? Morpheus told Neo that someone born in the Matrix had the power to change anything within it and he freed the willing humans from enslavement and led them to an underground sanctuary city that they named Zion... He was called 'The One' (O-N-E... also spells N-E-O) but he was mortal in the real world and passed away. The Oracle, who was an ally to the humans who escaped the Matrix, prophesied that 'The One' would return... reborn within the Matrix once again. He would bring an end to the war against the A.I. machines and free the human race. Morpheus (and the Oracle) spent years looking for 'The One' and that was revealed to be Neo, born Thomas Anderson in the Matrix. We now know that Neo is 'The One' ... but as the sequels unfold, more revelations about 'The One' and the A.I. machines are coming... Agent Smith and his like are sentient A.I. programs that can move in and out of any person hardwired to the Matrix, which is how they morph into agents when they sense distress or register anything unusual... The machines are not just the 'Squiddies' (or other mechanical contraptions) that hunt humans who are free from the Matrix... they are software programs as well that are produced and operate within and outside the Matrix. There are also A.I. programs that exist within the Matrix that oversee its operations, maintenance and other functions - and they are not agents, who act as the 'gatekeepers' and 'enforcers' within the Matrix. That will be seen in the sequels...
