Chronological is the way to go with Clone Wars. Back then, the episodes aired as they were being finished or something like that. And Your decision to watch the animated stuff in rel3ase order is the best you can do, imo. This way you'll experience it the way we did and will be able to get the most of the cameos!

Anakin is no longer a Padawan in this show, he has already been knighted. Out of respect, he still calls Obi-Wan Master.

The 2D Clone Wars cartoon, made by Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), aired between Episodes II and III, and fill a lot of gaps. No longer canon, but it's short and definitely worth the view. It's there we see Anakin being knighted, 3PO getting his gold plating and why Grievous coughs.
