@@HabitualCinema you need to watch the other 4 before the new ones, beneath the planet of the apes, escape from the planet of the apes, conquest of the planet of the apes, and battle of the planet of the apes
You get to see the Forbidden zone in the second one "Beneath the Planet of the Apes".
The five original movies are connected and tell the whole story. They aren't all the greatest movies, but as a whole, they were fantastic science fiction. Much of what it spawned as a franchise has been forgotten now, but it was pretty big for its time. It spawned magazines, comics, novels, and even a short-lived TV series. Pretty much the forerunner of what Star Wars would be ten years later. The makeup still holds up pretty well, and imagine the impact this had before there was anything like CGI or green screen. They were separate prosthetic pieces attached to the face so the parts could move independently, molded from each actors' face for the right fit and look. Because it was makeup, the actors could even make guest appearances in interviews and talk shows. In particular, Roddy McDowall (Cornelius) appeared on the Carol Burnett Show as Cornelius in a tuxedo, and sang and danced with her (can be found on KZread).
1) Taylor, the ultimate misanthrope, is forced to defend humanity throughout the movie once the first hunt ends. What irony. 2) Look at Taylor's face while Cornelius reads the 29th scroll. He knows these words could've come from himself only a short time ago. He's stunned. 3) Also, as far as the ending, the quote from Einstein I think applies: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".
The guy not very good at the mouth movement was one of the greatest actors of his day. You have to realize, the prosthetics used then are nearly 60 YEARS behind what is available today. For the time, what he managed to emote was amazing. Movie dialogue wasn't written with 2024 sensitivities.

And that actor was good enough to be the star of all but one of the remaining movies (he was busy on another film for #2) and the planet of the apes TV series. Watch the remaining ones and you will see him really shine in 3-5
Ah! Your edit is missing only one thing : The “shock cut” revealing the ape on horseback. That visual surprise was absolutely shocking to me as a little kid in 1970. The film was overwhelming then - still is.
There are no 'new ones' without this one and they are connected. peopls don't realise that coz they havent done what you've done and watched the original. Kudos to you.
This film is one of those "must see" films, it broke new ground across the film industry. It pretty much established what we now consider film franchises - big stories told through several films. Not that surprising Hollywood kept demanding more and kept reducing budgets throughout the succeeding 4 sequels and Arthur P. Jacobs continued making fairly entertaining entries with varied success. All have their high points and are worthwhile watching with "Escape" and "Conquest" being the best out of the 4 sequels, admittedly I have a soft spot for "Beneath" since I saw it at release and love James Gregory who starred as the war-mongering General Ursus, gotta love a gorilla with a cool hat and submachine gun. POV , I'm 63 so imagine a film that YOU saw that was so different that "it changed your life" and you'll come close to understanding what these original POTA films meant to the sci-fi crowd 50 years ago.

@@AlanCanon2222 You might be able to catch the series online somewhere, or at least some clips. Yes the original film is classic for sure but I enjoyed the series more than the sequels. I had some action figures too. 😊
As a long time fan of the Apes franchise, I'll recommend watching the other 4 movies in this series before going on to the new ones. The Marky Mark movie was more of a "proof of concept/interest" experiment. There's conjecture on whether the new movies are connected to the old ones, and some valid points for both sides of the argument. My "head canon" has the new movies as "an original timeline" beginning, that can lead to the original movies (which branch off into an alternate timeline.... you'll see what I mean if you watch them all). There is also a documentary about the original 5 movies called "Behind the Planet of the Apes", which is a really good watch.
So the newer ones are sort of inspired by the timeline established in the later movies in this series, mainly the fourth and fifth ones (CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES). If you watch the original series of movies and then move on to the new ones starting with RISE the parallels will be pretty obvious. I would recommend watching all five original movies because it is an absolutely bonkers, crazy storyline. Seriously, you could not predict where the movies end up just based on the first movie alone.
Great reaction ❤❤❤ wish you would watch them in order. I always loved them when I was a kid. My mom even bought the planet of the apes lunchbox for me back in the day😀😀😀

You'll definitely want to watch the next four of the series. 2 is a direct sequel to one. Three is a good exposition of one while also furthering the storyline. Number four Conquest for the Planet of the Apes is a good watch. People criticize number five and no it's not a cinematic masterpiece but it's still decent. It's a good commentary on the argument of nature vs nurture

The twist seems obvious now, but it made more sense back then. Planets virtually identical to Earth where everyone somehow speaks English was a common genre convention, nobody questioned it for the same reason most don't how every planet in Star Wars has breathable atmosphere and the same gravity.
Rise? Beneath! Watch Beneath the Planet of the Apes from 1970 next. It's the natural sequel to Planet of the Apes. Kim Hunter, aka Dr. Zira, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Stella Kowalski in the 1951 film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire. And Charlton Heston won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Judah Ben-Hur in the 1959 film Ben Hur.

Love this movie! I remember seeing this on the WB Network back in 1998, and it was impressive. Originally based on the novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle, it was going to be very different than the final cut of the movie, as the apes were going to drive jeeps, tanks, buses, trucks, trains, as well as flying helicopters and planes. The apes would even have a heirachy very similar to the United Nations, but this would have been too expensive. The budget was cut down to $5 million dollars. The film was a box office and critical success, making $32 million dollars. It won an Honorary Oscar for Best Makeup.

Great reaction! Yes, stick with this early series, you will like it. Have fun with it and enjoy!
Watch the next ones (BENEATH, ESCAPE, CONQUEST, and BATTLE) as they tell a complete story. The second is not great but it is a jumping off point to the rest. ESCAPE and CONQUEST are fantastic. Great science fiction and allegory. ESCAPE is essentially a reverse of the first film and CONQUEST explains how the planet got taken over by the apes.
You'd miss several parts of the story, but having seen this first one ... if you saw just the third movie - "Escape From the Planet of the Apes" - it would give you most of the stuff that's very memorable about the original series. The second film and two final films are fairly straightforward, IIRC. The twists are in the first and third movies.
Whether it’s ether one of y’all or Both I’m tuned in and I’m pretty sure everyone else is. love the reactions though including this one
A little background about the original Planet of the Apes series: Back in this time period a sequel was almost unheard of. They kept making movies thinking it was the last one. Halloween in Friday the 13th they're good examples of the same thing. The Dollar's degenerated on each sequel. Money was made by toys and games. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't watch the sequels, people did enjoy them anyway. There is even a standout sequel, but I won't give it away..
Ashly I love you enough to enjoy the reaction with just you! Jenna will be in the next video but you are just great alone! Love your reactions regardless ❤❤🎬
Please continue with the originals! They don’t get enough attention, even this one. Granted they’re not as good as the first, but they don’t deserve to be disregarded.
The screenwriter-producer of the first of the new trilogy described it as more of a reboot than a prequel, and director Rupert Wyatt compared it to Batman Begins. Wyatt did also say it was primarily a prequel to the original, but even then there’s a little inconsistency. So the new ones may not lead into to the classic films, but the same basic idea of them. The sequels would have to add some of the original lore. So far they’re still mostly separate. It’s not uncommon in old sci fi for aliens and their planets to have impossible similarities to Earth like language, environment, species, etc with maybe small differences. Hence why so many indicators that this actually is Earth aren’t taken as such. Plus the fact that their mission involved flying very very far away from Earth. How/Why would they be back? “They’re eyes look really good” Because those are the actor’s real eyes. We actually do see Landon get knocked out from a hit on the head with a rifle during the hunt, as Zaius claims, so the skull fracture part could be true. Whether he was still able to talk before he was lobotomized is unclear, though kind of implied he could. There’s a novel where he couldn’t because of spoilery reasons I won’t share; and a comic where he could and gets beaten until his skull is fractured, requiring surgery to save his life as Zaius said. Apes didn’t wipe out humans. Humans wiped themselves out. Apes evolved, and there’s really no indication radiation played a part.
I wanna see someone react to Escape from the Planet of the Apes. I have yet to see anyone get past Beneath.
Wassup my friend I always enjoy your videos keep up the amazing work 😊😊
first saw this film when it came out and I was about twelve yrs old it blew my mind and I never get tired of seeing other people's reactions to watching it for the first time⚛😀
Scifi and fantasy both can be done so much better today with all the advances in special effects. But it's kinda cool in a way to see them do it like this, all old school, and how audiences can overlook a lot of the faults and still find the story gripping, provocative, and entertaining.
Great reaction I would definitely say don't sleep on that Mark Wahlberg one it's actually not that bad of a movie I don't understand why a lot of people don't like it.

1. Ratings weren't all that back then. This was rated G. 2. NICE present man. 😍 3. See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil = Clueless apes (Except Dr. Zaius) 4. I was just a child when this came out and I was amazed at how well the main apes looked. 5. There was a very short lived (budget) tv series in the early 70s. 6. The next movie isn't as good. IMVHO "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" was the best. Cornelius and Zira go back to the early 70s. Ricardo Montauban is featured. 7. Dr. Zaius/Maurice Evans played Samantha Steven's warlock father in "Bewitched" 8. The scene with the deep canyon must have been for visual because only half of the party on one side doesn't make sense.🤩 9. Charlton Hesston played in "The Omega Man" (early I am Legend) and "Soylent Green." Both of which are good first time/shares. 10. At the time, this was one of the best twist endings. NOTE: The difference between monkeys and apes is apes don't have tails.
"Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius!"
Concerning many of your questions.... make sure to watch the end credit scenes at the end of RISE.
They went on a deep space mission where time is relative. They were gone for thousands of years. There was a nuclear war where humanity was decimated. Enough time went by and the primates evolved to be the dominate species. The new films are based on the older ones with some better writing and obvious all CGI.

I don't know who told you these movies and the newer ones aren't connected, if you watch them all in release order, (skipping the Tim Burton film), they actually do connect with the newer CGI films being like prequels. It's a bit of a stretch, but it does work out. The third and fourth films of this first series of 5 films are important to the canon.
The older series and the new series of movies are very similar, but not identical. Both are worth watching, if you don't mind spending the time.

Good job Ash. Love the reaction 😎
Human's ability to speak is related to a very, very specific part of the brain. It is amazing how little it takes to remove one's ability to speak. I have worked with the mentally handicapped and lack of speech is very common among them. The aging process can sometimes effect one's ability to speak. This can be seen in our two candidates for president. One candidate has a voice that has become weak and faltering, the other shows signs of vocabulary shrinking and occasionally unable to form words or recall the proper word. Actor Bruce Willis has recently lost the ability to speak. At first he could still communicate via writing but that has left him as well and is now completely devoid of language ability, while still fully cognizant.
No way in the world would anyone smoke a cigar on such a spacecraft. No rational astronaut would do it. No rational space agency would permit it. Despite Heston's character being narcissistic and patronizing, probably like Heston himself, this was a great, pioneering film.
Hello, check out a movie called, The Bad News Bears. (1976) Family/Comedy. It stars Walter Matthau, Jackie Earle Haley, Tatum O’Neal. A former minor-league pitcher and alcoholic who finds himself coaching a youth team of misfit baseball players.
Well done!
As the series progresses the budget got less and less for each successive film. I found the second one to be pretty good, the third one was okay, but there was a bit too much comic relief. The 4th and 5th did a good job of continuing the story, but again the budget and production values were quite low. As far as the makeup on this goes, I believe that it got an Academy Award for makeup.
Maybe it's because I'm in my 50s already, but I'll take the practical effects in a movie like this over the cgi of today. Even the 1st remake of this movie with Wahlberg was a good movie (I like this one better though) where all the makeup was practical and not a computer. I only watched the 1st one of this current series and i thought it was crap so haven't bothered with the others.
Yo, Ashley and Jenna! How’s it going, ladies. Your movie reaction videos have been top notch. A movie I recommend you watch is Black Dynamite.
Speaking as a biased old fart, this was the best apes movie to date. Oh sure, it has flaws and nothing compared to todays technology but it was the first one made and everything else followed it. All of the older movies are worth watching IMO, and because the newer ones don't really follow the original plot line, neither are they worth watching either. Personally didn't care for much of the rest of this series, but the new ones are fantastic.
I saw all the original sequels, and they’re good films.. But I don’t really do sequels anymore, or any series that doesn’t tell a complete story in one season.. For slightly different reasons, though.. Films I see as singular pieces of art that get corrupted with sequels.. And I don’t wanna get dragged for 10 seasons because the writers are flying by the seat of their pants.. That’s the extent of my beef, though.. I have no issue with capitalism.. lol..
The apes being able to speak English means nothing. It's just a conceit of the Sci-Fi genre. 99% of all American and British Science Fiction films shows aliens on other planets speaking English. It's just something the audience ignores. It's because it's extremely hard to tell a story where the different characters spend two hours not understanding what the other characters are saying. It makes for a remarkably dull story and brings the story to a screeching halt.
I'm gonna spoil the next 3 movies from the 60's ,70's version in hopes you watch them even though they weren't that great, No one ever watches them. Also in 1969 it wasn't very cool to be a flag waver. It was a much less openly fascist country then, at least the public anyway. The government always has been. Lol
The choice is yours. You have two options. If you only watch the first original 1968 & the new 4 - yes, you could speculate a link to the stories - it works but it is a false link. The new 4 are popular for reactors. NON-SPOILER DISCUSSION Below to help you decide.. *Thoughts on the 2001 stand alone movie* - Great make up jobs is the only pro. Very disappointing movie. Garbage script. A sad attempt at capturing certain sci fi elements of the original 5 and flipping them to make its own unique story. Honestly, this should only be watched as a curiosity and for the great prosthetics make up work. Certain script elements are forced in a sad attempt to be smart or wow the crowd with nostalgia. They fail on both counts and look stupid for even trying. *I'm a fan of both the original 5 and the new 4 for different reasons.* *THE ORIGINAL 5:* When it comes to pioneering science fiction concepts, levels of social commentary, and extremely DEEP speculation to fill the gaps - the original 5 cannot be matched. They were groundbreaking and thought provoking to this very day. Modern movie goers are not used to this level of thinking. The original 5 had both a TV live action series and an animated series spin off due to its popularity. They were the biggest science fiction movie franchise until Star Wars came around. PROS: - Plays to the mind more than the heart. - Does NOT hold the audience's hand. Even a single sentence will infer some very deep sci fi speculation. - This is the first movie franchise I know of that deals with the "Bootstrap Paradox" (a science fiction term with great meaning). - Make up prosthetics were cutting edge for the day. - Huge social commentary. Huge Sci Fi elements. Huge speculative concepts. Questions formed might take several movies before getting answered. - Huge epilogues to every movie - leaves one of the biggest, most incredible sci fi pay offs at the epilogue of the 5th movie. CONS: - Low budget got lower as the series progressed. Outdated special effects. - Movie 2 ("Beneath") is cash grab garbage as a stand alone movie. It would almost be better to have someone simply tell you the important lore key points rather than sit through this turkey. - Movie 5 ("Battle") relies heavy on reference lore connections from all the previous movies. If one isn't able to connect the lore to the movie, they lose out on much speculation & won't enjoy it as much. It wouldn't be very good as a stand alone movie, but still better than "Beneath" despite having the lowest budget of the series. - Some concepts that are common knowledge today were not really known in the 60's. These concepts can become noticeable plot holes for modern audiences. - Some complex concepts expect audience speculation and are not thoroughly explained. This means some important "connection aspects" could be missed out because they are not examined in a blunt, drawn out manner. *THE NEW 4:* I can only speak of the first 3. I have yet to see 4. PROS: - Great CGI special effects - Great action and movie pacing with a simple, thoroughly explained story line. As such, you can turn off your brain and enjoy 3 great popcorn flicks. - Pays homage to the original 5 with respect - for the most part. The bad is discussed in the CONS section. - Heavy on the nostalgia & Easter eggs for fans of the original 5 but tells a different story. - Plays well on the emotions - again making the new series better as popcorn flicks. - Most of the CONS are really only evident if you are familiar with the original 5 - Some derivatized sci fi concepts are reexamined better than how the original 5 explained them. The new series have the advantage of a modern approach rather than a 60's approach. CONS: - The sci fi is not deep or pioneering in any way. Anything interesting is a derivatized plot point straight from the original 5. The good of this is the concepts are blunt with a modern explanation and cannot be missed. - Some nostalgia feels a bit forced and clumsy. Even if you are not aware of the original 5 source material, the forced & clumsy execution of certain scenes are felt. - Some plot points are just a direct steal from the original 5 source material. - The social commentary is not very deep.
All the sequels are really bad. They were only made to capitalize on the originals success. But if you do see them please skip the second one. I watched it in the theater when I was a kid. To this day I think it was the worst movie ever made. Most of the actors in the second one agreed.
You are so beautiful

Watch the last two of the new ones and, having seen this 1968 one, you'll have watched the best. A self contained trilogy. The ones released in the 1970s are forgettable. 👍👌
whatever you do DO NOT watch the others in this series which were made in the sixties and early seventies cause they're AWFUL⚛😀

@@jamesalexander5623 I know. She asked which one she should do next. I picked "Rise". She can choose" Beneath" next but that was my Personal Vote.

Thanks for picking a classic! This is just my personal opinion but I loved the original five movies when I was a kid. I have no influence over you of course but if you liked the first one they are all (more or less) as good and fit together well like pieces of a puzzle. Are they connected with the newer ones? To me they are sort of like prequels. At least they kind of started out that way. There is also a remake of the original story directed by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg, with even better makeup effects
The PoA movies that followed this were terrible. Possibly the worst trilogy in cinematic history.
