ZooTopia Movie Description:
From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox who makes her job even harder.
Zootopia (titled Zootropolis in various regions) is a 2016 American computer-animated buddy cop action-comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 55th Disney animated feature film, it was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-directed by Jared Bush (in his feature directorial debut), and produced by Clark Spencer, from a screenplay written by Bush and Phil Johnston, and a story by Howard, Moore, Bush, Johnston, Jim Reardon, Josie Trinidad, and Jennifer Lee.
The film stars the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and Shakira. Taking place in the titular city where anthropomorphic mammals coexist, it tells a story of an unlikely partnership between a rabbit police officer and a red fox con artist as they uncover a criminal conspiracy involving the disappearance of predators.
Zootopia premiered at the Brussels Animation Film Festival in Belgium on February 13, 2016, and went into general theatrical release in Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, and 4DX formats in the United States on March 4. Zootopia received positive reviews from critics, who praised its screenplay, animation, voice acting, subject matter, and Michael Giacchino's musical score. The film opened to record-breaking box offices in several countries, and earned a worldwide gross of over $1 billion, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2016. The film earned numerous accolades; it was named one of the top ten best films of 2016 by the American Film Institute, and received Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, among numerous other accolades. A television spin-off series, Zootopia+, premiered on Disney+ on November 9, 2022.

    @@kateiannacone2698 I think it's rather unfair to characterize what she said about predators as stereotyping though. People going "savage" was not an isolated case, it happened to what, like 15 or so individuals? And in every single instance, it only affected predators. That shows a very clear pattern. The reason was because the sheep were targeting them specifically to lead the public to the wrong conclusion, but there WAS a definitive pattern and being a predator was entirely a requirement to be affected as far as they knew in that moment.

Yes, the fact that they were all predators is a "fact of the case," but her saying "I think it might have something to do with their biology" and "they're reverting to their primitive savage ways" was speculation. She didn't know that for certain, and therefore, it was not a "fact of the case."

    Bellweather was essentially trying to force public support for making predators less than equal. The original script, reportedly, was a lot darker, with predators wearing shock collars that trigger if the predator gets too excited. This could be a possible consequence of "predators going savage and mauling prey civilians", all predators having to be controlled via the collars.

  • @jay0787

    @jay0787

    The original script also developed into a different plot surrounding Nick Wilde, when a doctor's appointment made him motivated to create an amusement park where predators could freely have fun without getting shocked. Still really weird that of all Disney movies in the past 100 years, Zootopia's plot changed the most.

    I don't remember if this was in the movie, or if I just made it up, but I thought that Bellwether's plan wasn't *just* to make some predators go nuts for no reason, but to (1) make them go nuts (2) convince people it's a natural part of the predator biology (3) use this "fact" to push for discriminatory laws/segregation. The original concept of the movie was a lot darker, and it included mandatory shock collars for predators. NGL, I'm kind of glad that they changed that.

I think the most powerful message,(especially for Americans) is that Judy had good intentions but because of childhood trauma and prejudice comments from her parents, she ended up damaging a community she’s not from and didn’t fully understand. Plot wise Judy was a pawn for Bellweather, but the Message behind it all was so strong.

    I love this movie's message that unity and equality doesn't mean that everything will be perfect. "Real life is a little bit more complicated than a message on a bumper sticker. Real life is ... messy. But the important thing is that we try. We all try to make the world a better place." I think that's a great message for everyone, but especially for kids. We're all mortal. We aren't going to get everything right all the time. But if we all keep an open mind and try to do our best for those around us, we'll be OK in the end.

    See what's bad about what Judy said at the conference is more than just hurting Nick's feelings, it's the fact that she told the press/the world a biased answer. She should've just left it at the truth, which was that they still don't know what's going on, but then she saw the reporters' faces and thought about what her parents said in the beginning about "it's in their biology" crap. There's literally not a shred of evidence that it has something to do with "biology".

The funny part is his character name in this movie was Duke Weaselton, which is a reference to another character that Alan Tudyk voiced in Frozen, the Duke of Weselton. Since Zootoptia was released 3 years after Frozen, one wonders how much the script of Zootopia was designed to make this little reference work out, or was it just a lucky coincidence.

    My favorite animal is a wolf. My spirit animal is a bear. I’m heavy set, furry, like to eat almost anything, but can get pissed off and fight when I need to. Bellweather’s plan made sense though. She said prey out numbered predators 10-1. If prey votes against predators like the lion mayor and vote in other prey they essentially take over and given their numbers all it would take is a little public outrage to make it happen.

    I disagree with saying she was simply stating the facts of the case. The whole problem is they didnt have any facts. Sure, all the ones affected by the plant were predators, but that isn't really anything to go off of. Judy very well could have chosen her words more carefully, because obviously what she said was going to plant a huge target on Predators' backs. Not her intention, but it should be pretty clear how the media takes things. Nick had every right to be upset. Imagine you go your whole life without hurting a fly, only for someone to say that your kind is slowly going insane, and just based on some random shit someone said, you're now being alienated.

    I love this movie so much! The effort that went into the animation is inspiring and the message was so good. Fun fact: the original story was cut for being to dark. Originally all predators had to wear shock collars that shocked them whenever they felt too much emotion. But obviously that was scrapped. Also you asked for favorite animals: mine is Arctic Foxes.
