Oh my God! What a perfection! Every track is wonderful but the cover of "What Was I Made For?" It is absurdly beautiful, impeccable, sublime! What a spectacular job, Jen. Congratulations. I'm already recommending it and sharing it with everyone. Your voice is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. It's like listening to an angel!

You haven’t even heard them singing high yet. Jimin and Jin can go really high. Jimin naturally has an extremely high voice, but it’s extremely distinct. I think you’d really appreciate his voice.

agreed !! especially the festa live, such a great introduction to their discography and live singing skills

One reason I love BTS is that no one person takes the spotlight. They have been together over 10 years & are like family. They are all very supportive of each other, not jealous. They are all multi-talented, yet remain humble. They absolutely love their fans (called ARMY), who are ALL ages. Ages 5-90 in our family alone. So glad my daughter introduced me to them over 4 years ago. Just wish it would have been sooner. I listen to them every day. Thank you.

There is no backtrack during the performance, except the wayayayayaya and yeahhhhhh part at the end, It is entirely Live with a few backing track adlibs here and there

This was live, that is, it was filmed on Sunday while BTS performed live. The video was shown to the UN General Assembly on Monday morning after BTS's speech. (Somebody worked through the night editing the video.)

This is my favorite performance of Permission to Dance. Their first post-COVID international trip. Flew into New York City around 4:00 PM on Saturday (not sure how many hours of jet lag from Seoul but it's six hours of time zone difference from Hawaii to NYC, so def more than 6 hours). Got to the hotel, got food and maybe a nap, were at the UN building at 1:00 AM Sunday morning for the interior filming. They had to completely re-do the first 90 seconds of choreography to deal with all the furniture -- I will always be impressed by Jimin singing with his back to the stairs, pivoting 180 degrees, leaping down 4 stairs, and pivoting back to face the camera, all within 4 beats of music. Then the traveling steps as they crossed the lobby - more improv dance. When they got to the lawn area, I have no idea how they managed to line up in a straight line with no stage markers for orientation. The outside filming was obvi done in the afternoon of Sunday. They were are the UN again on Monday at 8:00 AM for their presentation to the General Assembly. Professionalism to the nth degree!!!

This was live to tape (do they even call it that now?), so yes singing live. They probably used their backing track for the additional voices you're hearing in the background. In terms of the vocal line, what I love is that each of them have very distinct voices that somehow mesh beautifully. And the three rappers in this really did a great job vocally. They've grown a lot - they were never bad, but there has definitely been growth.

BTW, three of the singers here are primarily rappers (RM, SUGA, and J-Hope); we rarely hear them sing melodies.

One of the writers on this song was Ed Sheeran, he collaborated on a couple songs with them

For the record, while Jung Kook's songs and this song plus BTS song Dynamite were written for JK/BTS, BTS actually writes a lot of their own music - like 99% of lyrics, and they are involved in - are on the production team for - a lot of the song production as well. Just responding to you correcting yourself at the beginning to say "or have songs written for them that are..." Basically, when they're looking for a more western sound and/or English lyrics, they get help, which is normal, of course. RM speaks English pretty fluently, and he does even write English portions of their mainly Korean songs, and he had writing credits on Butter as well.

Yes, they all wrote some songs and produce some songs. Even Suga have an award for producing other artist (Suran). Some lyrics are very deep meaning with reference of Korean culture, western pylosophy or thinkers. They talk about politics, economy, social phenomenon, education system, mental health, etc. If you are interested, their fans made video explanation like DKDKTV youtube channel.

Some of the choreo is sign language!

jimin's voice is killing me

It might be live with a backup track. There was no lip synching in my opinion.

Jin of BTS singing "The Astronaut" is fun. And of course there is "The Truth Untold" with all four vocalists. There's an endless BTS journey of joy ahead of you if you like lovely voices, great melodies, creative choreography and meaningful lyrics.

They really are masters of the handoff, and balancing each song with each member. nobody ever outshines another, even the rappers

Sometimes, depending on the event and purpose of the shoot, they will perform live several times. Then one of those live vocals gets used all the way through. So, they may have different shots from different takes incorporated into the final video.

BTS always sings live, but sometimes they support themselves with a backing vocals track, especially during difficult choreographies. Their songs usually have a lot of voice "layers" (I don't know the technical term). When in the recording the layers are by the same singer at the same time (or the same rapper, they play with that when it's pure rap too), for live performances they sometimes use backing tracks behind the main voice, sometimes they get another member of the group to do it, and sometimes a backup singer or even a musician when they have live music too. I think they change it up depending on the song or type of performance

I admire them singing their song live, since only one of them is fluent in English. So they are singing not in their native language.

Loved this reaction, particularly the stunned look on your face when V sang with his deeper, unique tone. I giggled when you said, "That was high" for Jin whilst thinking of their song Crystal Snow. That was nowhere near high for the 4 vocalists. Could you tell which 3 are actually rappers? Love this performance, great reaction. I love your analysis and personality haha This song brought so much happiness to people who were going through a hard time during the pandemic. A fun fact is that if you change the order of the letters of "Permission to dance", it forms "Stories on pandemic" oh and part of the choreo has sign language too. I will never forget when this performance was broadcasted in the UN live stream after some speeches and the man who was doing the sign language of the lyrics of the song stopped when he realized BTS was doing it and then smiled 😭 It was so wholesome When it comes to performances and singing live BTS always give us the best! they are incredible. There 4 vocalists (Jungkook, Jimin, Jin and V) and 3 rappers (RM, J-hope and Suga/Agust D). Before debuting all the members in the vocal line didn't have experience singing, especially Jimin an Jin that learnt from zero. Some never danced before and J-hope never rapped before. It's amazing how much they practiced to be where they are now. These last couple of years we have seen how the rap line progressively are improving their singing and this makes so so proud. The constant growth as artists and as people inspire me a lot. Singing is my dream (as a hobby lol) and thanks to them I try to sing constantly, I cant take classes but I watch some videos an analysis like this to notice more things and honestly I think I've improved a little bit! Hehe… it’s a song which aimed to include everyone enduring the pandemic. They deliberately simplified the choreography for Permission To Dance so that pretty much anyone could do it. It also includes International Sign Language for the chorus. They are renowned for their complex, layered storytelling, which includes the dance. The three all-English songs they released during the pandemic were intended to be light and uplifting and were almost entirely written by westerners. These songs are perfectly fine but aren’t really representative of their discography, or their typical sound(s). They have always crossed and mixed genres in order to deliver their messages.

Recommend you listen to Fri(end) by V which is charting now in the UK and listen to V live on Tiny Desk NPR . I dont thinkni need to say anything else about his vocals and him as an artist just that he's and anamoly in the industry and BTS in terms of music and style. Do listen to all the members.

Kind of a strange first pick for BTS. Can I suggest BTS Festa Room Live from 2021. The do small parts of several songs so you can get an idea of each of their strengths.

Also another very good singer named Baekhyun has 3 songs that I love called: Bambi, Cry for love & Candy

It's not a Music video, its a live performance at UN general Assembly. They were invited to give a speech there about their LOVE MYSELF Campaign. Permission to danace on one of three songs which is completely in english, and all three of them are upbeat and poppy because they were released during the pendemic to chear the fans (ARMY). They are masters of singing live with absolute stable vocals. There are 3 rappers in the group and 4 vocalists, but you won't be able to pinpoint them because even their vocals are impressive, even though they are rappers. Side note: sorry for any grammatical mistake as english is noty first language.

If you want to check out vocally interesting KPOP groups I HIGHLY recommend (G)I-DLE. They are a self-produced five member group where each member has different and unique vocal timbres. Also Red Velvet and aespa are just vocally impressive KPOP groups.
