First Time Watching Brewster's Millions (1985) *WHAT would you do??*

I watched the 1985 film Brewster's Millions from 1985, starring John Candy and Richard Pryor, as well as Jerry Orbach, Joe Grifasi, and many others. It's a unique idea and both Candy and Pryor, both being comedy powerhouses, deliver a great performance.

    I think there was a part where his uncle explicitly stated that he could only give a certain percentage to charity. So, I don't think he could have just chosen 30 charities around the world.

    The political part of this film reminds me of Eddie Murphey in "The Distinguished Gentleman." I found that one alarmingly educational about the U.S. Senate.

    Jean-Paul Audette ...You're welcome. I think that The Distinguished Gentleman is underrated. The tight plot and editing enhances Eddie Murphy's unique comedic timing. The "con man becomes avenging hero" trope, while not unique itself, is handled with enough style to keep an audience engaged. You might be thinking Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, which does take place in the Senate.

    I really love this movie. Fun and enjoyable. Fun Fact: In a few scenes, a train passes through the outfield of the stadium where the Bulls play. In the 1930s and 1940s, that was a common occurrence at ball parks used by teams in the Texas leagues.

    I wonder why they built train tracks so they would go through stadiums? Or more likely, why they built stadiums on top of train tracks.

    Kat Reacts ...Good question. To be honest, I didn't dig too deep into what happen. Looking at the timeline, I can only assume that the train tracks came first and the locals built them over the tracks because there was no other space. The state of Texas likely put an end to the stadiums when people got hurt. This is just speculation on my part.

    It was another condition of the deal that Monty could only give no more than 10% (I think) of the principal $30 million to charity. Same with only being allowed to gamble with 5% (I think) of it. I've always loved this movie, it is such a fun ride and I wish Pryor and Candy made more movies together, they just make me smile every time they are on screen. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the abrupt ending. I would have liked a little more of an epilogue with Monty and his friends, him finally being able to tell them the real deal. Also, as I've grown older, I've come to suspect it still would be extremely easy to spend $30 million in a month even with all the conditions of the deal Monty had to abide by. But I don't let that ruin the fun of the movie for me. It's still easy to buy in (heh) to the premise and just have a good time! Best Regards!

    I'll second "The Toy"... It's definitely a movie that would never get made today.. For Richard Pryor.. the underrated pairing with Gene Wilder "See No Evil, Hear No Evil".. also I really enjoyed the Pryor film "Moving" (a criminally forgotten 80s comedy).

    She takes it so seriously because she thinks he is spending his money without a care and she knows he will end up broke, when he could save his money and live a comfortable life if he just takes care of it. She doesn't have a clue that he has a purpose in spending 30 million like a madman.

  • @DV80s
    @DV80s10 ай бұрын

    Oh yeah, last point, the reason the uncle wanted Brewster to spend 30 million and not have assets was to make Brewster sick of spending money so he would actually learn to take care of his fortune and not just waste it. After all, it's easy to spend a fortune someone else built up, unless you make that person adverse to spending like a wild man.

    You could only give a certain amount to charity. That was part of the rules. His uncle and Brewster were related. It says during the will how they are related.

    15:13 I wonder if reactors actually watch and listen to the parts they cut-out to show on KZread.--Condition-only 10% could be spent on charity or giving away, is my understanding..-Ernie Moore Jr

  • @twooharmony2000

    15:13 Do people who do the reactions skip the movie like the reaction viewers and only get parts??? You said at the beginning what you would do--100% to charities. And not that that's not reasonable. But to say that again after supposedly having paid attention to the whole movie, if they said in the beginning he could spend only some of it on charaties... As I recall, it was a stipulation that only 10% (ten percent) can be given to charities. Also, you could not just give it away-was my understanding.-Ernie Moore Jr. The point and challenge was to spend! 30 Million dollars in 30 days with nothing to show for it at the end the challenge in that is in a business an item bought by a company is called an asset and counts as positive something because Even with zero money in your pockets and the bank the items, even chairs--equipment can be sold and that money goes to the company, which is why leasing so much even his clothes was smart.-Ernie Moore Jr. Thank you for your practical and character supportive responses.-Ernie Moore Jr.
