BOWFINGER MOVIE REACTION | 0:00 - 30:01
BOWFINGER MOVIE REVIEW | 30:02 - 32:41
Bowfinger Movie Description:
On the verge of bankruptcy and desperate for his big break, aspiring filmmaker Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) concocts a crazy plan to make his ultimate dream movie. Rallying a ragtag team that includes a starry-eyed ingenue (Heather Graham), a has-been diva (Christine Baranski) and a film studio gofer (Jamie Kennedy), he sets out to shoot a blockbuster featuring the biggest star in Hollywood, Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) -- only without letting Ramsey know he's in the picture.
Bowfinger is a 1999 American comedy satirical film directed by Frank Oz. It depicts a down-and-out filmmaker in Hollywood attempting to make a film on a small budget with a star who does not know that he is in the film. It was written by Steve Martin, who also stars alongside Eddie Murphy in two roles, and Heather Graham as an ambitious would-be starlet. The film was released on August 13, 1999, to largely positive reviews, and grossed $98 million.

Eddie Murphy has given a lot of award-worthy performances but this is the one where I think he really got robbed. Kit and Jiff are some of his funniest performances and they couldn't be more opposite of each other. Not only that, but he gives them depth, and you actually feel for them even with his ridiculous things get it.

So yes, Steve Martin wrote this movie. I imagine he and Eddie has some great moments together figuring this stuff out. The highway run is one of the funniest scenes in movie history. It's a bit frustrating when reaction videos leave out some of the best parts of the scene (like when Steve Martin reassures him that all the cars are driven by stunt drivers. "Oh, so that's how you do it." (or something like that).

This is my moms favorite movie and so few people have seen it. In the highway scene they lied to Eddie Murphy and told him the cars would stop for him when he ran across but it was a real highway so they didn’t stop. His panic and tears when he got across were not acting.

  • @karlmortoniv2951

I haven't seen this one in far too long! I remember it came and went without anyone noticing back in the day, it's nice to see that people have caught up with it. :) Apparently Frank Oz gave Eddie Murphy a lot of room to improvise and Steve Martin was smart enough to be okay with it. A lot of the best stuff came out of Eddie's or Steve's brain on the spot. Everything about how Jiff looks and acts is all Murphy. Seems to me I read somewhere that Murphy's part was originally written for Keanu Reeves but either he didn't want to do it or the studio didn't think he was big enough - this came out the same summer that "The Matrix" did but I can't imagine anyone would rather see Keanu than Eddie Murphy in this. Years ago I read an interview with Steve Martin and he said he had a very different and much darker ending in mind when he originally wrote this. The story was going to be more bitter in tone and would climax with Martin's character throwing a big party at a mansion in Beverly Hills for all the big stars in town, who would be played by themselves in loads of cameos. But Bowfinger was gonna be so bitter and twisted (he might have had inoperable cancer as well, or something - can't remember for sure) that his cunning plan was to blow up the house with all of Hollywood in it, killing everyone. The end credits would be the next year's Oscar ceremony and there are like twelve people there. LMAO!!! I'm glad he was talked around to where the movie ends now, but the thought of his original ending always makes me laugh.

The whole thing is a spoof. It's supposed to all be totally absurd and Eddie Murphy is a comedic genius.

Love your reactions man! I gotta recommend the movie Hamlet 2. A totally ridiculous movie, but I really think you would dig it.

The only movie with a similar premise that I can think of off the top of my head is John Waters's 'Cecil B Demented' where they basically kidnap Melanie Griffith and force her to make a movie.
