FIRST TIME Trying NEEDLE FELTING! Japanese Craft Kit Challenge

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

First Time Needle Felting a Japanese craft kit I got at the daiso ( Japanese Dollar store). This kind of craft is much more difficult than I thought! I attempt making an adorable squirrel, but it definitely looks very different from the intended final project

Needle felting advice!😄 1. When trying to see how big something will be when felted, scrunch the felt up as much as possible. That's about how big it will be. 2. When making a round shape, always stab from various angle to help round the felt. This means moving the ball around, not poking at funny angles. 3. Don't over poke until you have attached everything! You want your felt to have some give until you attatch your limbs and details. Felt gets harder and less fluffy the more you poke it so keep that in min 4. It helps to make a small pattern like when you sew so you can have a jist of how big everything needs to be. This is only needed when you're felting your own creations. 5. I tend to find that single needles are better for shaping and attatching, but multi needles are good for making arms, clothes and adding fur or textures. Hope this advice helps any wannbe felters 😗

Kesh hunter Also is it just me or did anyone else find it strange that this kit used all roving and no batting? Roving is better used to wrap armature and it's actually quite hard to felt it tight and smooth. You would think this kit would have provided batting since it's asking the maker to form shapes with no underlying structure.

strayiggyTV Actually most of my needlefelt is made with exclusively rovings. It's an extremely niche hobby where I live so scrounging for resources that are made for NF is kind of hard. I mostly use polyfill for batting cause there's few other affordable options.

Kesh hunter Oh man that's rough! Mad props to you for making it work! I'm blessed in that I live within an hour of living felts store front but before I discovered them I was useing mostly roving too. A good quality batting makes such a huge difference in my work I can't imagine going back to having to make it out of roving. Needle felting seems pretty popular in Japan though, so I still think it's a little strange many of their kits are roving only especially when they supply so many nice tools

  • @keshhunter8816

strayiggyTV yeah I'm mostly forced to by the rovings and starter kits from ebay. I like to work without the instructions from a typical kit. I won't claim to be the best at NF as I am 100% self taught, but I think I'm rather good. Honestly for begginers YT is probably your best resource for learning how to felt.

I'm pretty new to felting, and if there's one thing i've learned it's that you have to felt WAY longer than you think. I felted a 2 inch buneary and it took almost three hours. It's a very time consuming process but very worth it!

  • @isabellecook5860
    @isabellecook58605 жыл бұрын

When I started felting, it took a lot of practice to figure it out, so here is some adivce: To make something fluffy, don't poke it as much, or just take a little wool, and poke down only one side so the rest is free and fluffy If you want to put two things together, such as head and body, you should poke them together like how you were, then go back with more felt to go over it and seal it in place. I have found out that single needles are easier to use it you are making details, and double is better for when you are making your item. Hope this helped (Btw your squirrel is adorable)

Nereida Lora just buy a starter kit on eBay then you can check if you actually like it and just mess around making a few balls and simple shapes. You can get kits really cheap on eBay that have needles, some eyes and stuff and loads of small amounts of different coloured felts. Cost me £11. The first thing I ever made using it was a Marill from Pokemon 😂 it was a disaster but I’m still doing it a year later and thankfully I’m a lot better lol

Advice: only poke straight in and out. #twss If you bring the needle out at a different angle than you went in, it will break. You can reduce stabbing injuries by keeping your fingers where you can see them. Turn your piece often when you’re felting. Look for videos by Gretel Parker.

Haha this was very entertaining! You read my mind too; I thought “he doesn’t look so bad,” then you showed the box and I laughed way too hard 😅 I’ve always wanted to try it, but I’ve watched a lot of needle felting videos so I have the gist of the process haha From what I’ve learned, the reason your squirrel was so fluffy is because he needed a little more poking - the more you poke the felt the smoother and sturdier it becomes. I’m sure you could still poke him a bit if you wanted to, I just know it’s best to attach the limbs when it’s still a bit fluffy (or leave spots loose to attach them).

As an avid felter, I think you did well for your very first time. I personally don't follow instructions, but make my own stuff, without measuring the amount of wool I use. Tips/tricks I learned: * Using a rougher type of wool makes felting faster, so I use normal sheep wool as a base (making the ball and cilinder-ish shape) for the head and body and cover those with merino-wool (the one used most in those packages). * For the fluffiness, with the single needle, you can try to tuck plucks away and make the surface look smooth, all the strands that still stand can be cut off with tiny scissors. *Making pointy ears, I fold the strand over on itself a few times, making a triangle and poking each time I lay on the next strand, flipping it over while doing so (don't want to get it stuck on the mat). You have to turn over any smooth surface, poking through makes the fibers come out on the other side of the piece (which is how the different parts tangle together). * Instead of using an awl (it's a poking tool, it looks like a chenille needle with a grip instead of an eye) and those kind of eyes (they are expensive...) I make eyes with felt or use black beads I sew on. the ends of the tread you can easily hide behind some extra wool. In the end, as with anything, practice makes perfect. You'll learn some small tricks and what works best for you as you go along. (And if anyone wants to see the stuff I made, I post pictures of most of my creations here: makingtangles.tumblr.com/)

A larger, more traditional awl is used in woodwork (think tiny screw head) Also I like your squirrel & if you’re ever bored just google “squirrel yawn”. ok, real talk, salty, i found you because i needed someone to binge videos for while working on my needlefelting projects! also love ur squirl, but a bit of advice, the more u stab it the ore compacted and less squishy it becomes those fluffy bits also go away from repeated doing this. but you can do it whatever way you like! some people like to make it more compacted, but thst is time consuming. im usually in the middle range! personally when i do it, i like to make a wire base first so it has possibility, but you need to be extra careful with the needle then since there so fragile! it was a joy watching you try this for the first time!!

I came here from Royalty Soaps and you're amazing! That squirrel looks like a shady character wanting to sell you bogus insurance but he's just trying to make his way in the world.

#NERDEFICATIONSQUAD Needle felting has QUITE a learning curve. I was taught IN PERSON and still struggled with it. I made a pretty cute anime neko girl head though. The more you stab it, the tighter and smoother it will be. This is why yours looks so different from the photo. Also, to avoid those little pockmarks, move the needle around more while you stab. :) Also, I don't know if the instructions told you to cut it but when I was taught we just pulled it apart and folded it. This was pretty good for your first try with no tutorials or anything! I'm impressed. It's so cute!

I was stationed in Japan when I was in the Navy. It's been years ago. They either didn't have those kits back then or I wasn't paying attention. I have now gotten interested in needle felting and want to go back. I LOVED THE 100¥ STORES!!!! (Sorry for shouting, but I loved them that much.)
