for 18 yrs i lived in Saigon i never had broken rice. back in those days, broken rice, which is the broken rice kernel going through the rice dehusking process , was mostly eaten by the less fortunate as it is cheaper than whole rice. however the garnish, grilled meat and whatnot, you see accompanying broken rice plates nowadays, we just eat them with white rice noodles for example. i am actually very happy to see that the current diet of the poor people has much improved. for all my wistfulness for the bygone past, because that is what i experienced, i am very happy for their current standard of living

I read a bit about the history of broken rice. And according to what I read, the dish did begin as you described. It was simply the rice that poor people ate because all the good rice was sold to the market. And then the local farmers would eat the broken rice kernels that were left behind. I remember coming across similar patterns around the world for crops like coffee. All the best beans were gathered up and sold to international markets. And then the local people would make their coffee from the malformed beans or bits of broken coffee beans that were left over. But then, I guess, this broken rice became a popular dish for everyone.

I often forget how useful my smartphone can be just to record video at any time. I'm not a fan of smartphone ergonomics for recording video as a rule, but it does the job and it's always in your pocket. 😃 I'm glad you enjoyed the spontaneous tone of this type of video. 👍

This simple approach is just a rewarding for the viewer as your more complex and involved productions.I like it. So laid back and spontaneous. I always like spontaneous. So fun knowing this was shot the day before your Mekong trip, though we know you've already come and gone from there. You make the most of every moment of your travels to capture and share more details than you could possibly post in real time. 👍

Thanks, Terry. I keep struggling with that balance between fresh, spontaneous experiences and more informative perhaps heavily edited videos. One big advantage to the spontaneous and simple approach is that it takes a lot less time to edit and upload.

When I was editing this little video, I didn't actually like the audio very much. It bothers me that the levels change dramatically when you turn the phone around. It goes louder and softer. But I'm probably overthinking it. 🙂 The one thing I often forget is that both audio and video quality change dramatically depending on the device you use when playing the video. I always edit the video these days on my laptop and I have the audio playing over the laptop speakers. And then I make my editing decisions based on what I see and hear. But someone else playing the video on their smartphone or on a big TV or using earphones might see and hear something completely different. The other day, I plugged some earphones into my MacBook while editing. And suddenly the tone of the audio was completely different. The audio from the Rode Wireless Go sounded almost too loud and vibrant. It was too much in my ears. And then I wondered if that's what everyone else hears. It's so hard to make these decisions. 🤯😁

I don't find that hard to believe. I guess a true gourmet would consider it a somewhat simple dish. But it has a lot of elements, and I find it has very good flavor. I gravitate towards meals that are simple and filling at a good price, and com tam fits the bill. I found a big, popular restaurant in my neighborhood here in Dalat that specializes in com tam, and I have it for lunch almost every single day. When my friend Daryl was here shooting video for his WanderEats KZread channel, he tracked down a local neighborhood restaurant that had a very good reputation for its com tam. We had dinner there one night, and he will be posting a video about it. So I guess I'm saying that it's not so unusual to have this as a favorite meal. I really like it. 😎

Hey Doug, have you tried any contemporary (modern) Vietnamese dishes yet? I just had a nice dinner for 3 at Mùa Craft Sake for only about 40$, including 5 dishes, 6 sake cups & 2 cocktails. Still pretty a steal comparing to the West.

No, I don't think I've had any meals quite like that. When my friend Darryl was here, we went out to a couple of much nicer restaurants. One was a quite fancy vegetarian a la carte buffet place. I assume that anyone who knows about good food would be quite impressed with the dishes I had that night. And most of it was traditional Vietnamese food. I enjoyed it, but I'm sure I didn't really appreciate what I was eating. 😁

Planet Doug, nice to watch you. Glad you’re enjoying yourself in beautiful Vietnam. But I don’t get something, your saying you don’t know what some of these food items are? They don’t have Vietnamese restaurants where you live in America? You never researched or tried anything before you come to Vietnam? You were here 30 some years ago, but some delicious Vietnamese food don’t ring a bell? I don’t get it? But hey, you’re finding out now I guess. Enjoy. Can’t believe some of your friends don’t share some great tips or secrets on what to order in Vietnam?? 😮 but it’s nice to watch you, you explain so well on everything! Great job

@67dumptruck1 I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Thank you! I guess I'm just not a foodie. I don't really pay much attention to the food that I eat. In most countries, I usually find one or two simple and inexpensive meals that I enjoy. And then I'll eat those meals the entire time that I'm there. I'm also terrible with languages in Asia and remembering the names of anything. I often have to resort to simply pointing at pictures and using body language to order food. So, I usually eat something, and I have no idea afterwards what it was called. For example, I'll go into a restaurant and see the food that other people have at their tables. And then I'll just point at what they're eating, and the server will bring me that same meal. I have no idea what I ordered, what it's made out of, or even what it's called. Since I started shooting KZread videos, I've tried to pay a bit more attention to food because I know that most people in the world are very interested in food. But it doesn't come naturally to me. And I have to work very hard to figure out even what meals are called. I even routinely go for long periods of time withouut eating anything at all. And that happens much more now that I make KZread videos. Editing videos takes so long that I just stay in my hotel room for an entire day or even two days drinking coffee and eating nothing at all. So, food is not a big part of my daily routine. I haven't actually lived back in Canada for a long time. I've spent most of the last two or three decades in Asia, living in places like South Korea and Taiwan. And when I was there, I would generally eat South Korean or Taiwanese food. I wouldn't go out looking for Vietnamese restaurants or anything like that. As I said, I just find a couple of local dishes that I enjoy and that are filling and not expensive, and I'll eat those all the time. So I never really learn about the food in whatever country I'm visiting. I'm trying to learn more and pay attention to food details because I'm shooting KZread videos. But none of the names ever stick in my brain even when I put them into a video. 😃

I think the standard price for my room was around 300,000 dong. That's about $12 US per night. I usually got it cheaper than that by looking for special deals on Agoda and timing my reservation just right. I often managed to book the room for 250,000 dong. Right now I'm in the city of Dalat. My room here is similar to what I had in Saigon, and it costs 200,000 dong per night. That's about $8 US.

Nothing like that has happened to me during my time in Vietnam. In fact, that hasn't been an issue in any country I've visited over the last few years. When I don't know the exact price of something as simple as a lunch, I often hand over a larger bill and then simply wait for the change. I've never been overcharged that I'm aware of. And in this case, it certainly wasn't a mistake. As I said in the video, I gave the woman 100,000 dong and she gave me 50,000 in change. And now that I've been in Vietnam a bit longer, I know that 50,000 dong is a perfectly reasonable price for the meal I had. I've paid roughly the same amount for this dish many times since then. In fact, I'm going to have the same meal for lunch today here in Dalat. 😁 There's a wonderful cơm tấm restaurant right beside my hotel and I often have lunch there. The meal costs roughly the same at 55,000 dong. Of course, I can't speak for everyone's experience in Vietnam. But I've had an extremely pleasant time here, and every vendor or seller I've dealt with has been 100% honest.
