She makes weeping sound beautiful. Much of her singing here is created similarly how the muscles work in the throat when crying. I mean I feel like it many times, like the "oo-aaah"s, looking up letting her voice out that way, squeezing the thin high notes etc. And oh her tunes of 'hesitation' in the little runs between two lines of "no way she can take you away" 🥺 (I think you would enjoy and analize as well the artist Eivor, her performance especially" Falling Free "/ live in Tórshavn)

Thanks for a great reaction! Her name is Abigail Smith from West Memphis, Arkansas. Abbey spelled backwards (Yeh-bba, her mothers nickname for her when she was growing up). She is a phenomenon. You are in for a treat as you continue to discover this singer/songwriter, the kind that comes along once in a generation. I have listened to every youtube clip I could find during the lockdown. I listen to her Tiny Desk Concert that just came out almost every day. Her songs, her lyrics, choice of musicians and singers (the best back-up vocalists I have ever heard) and her vocal agility (off the charts). Give it a listen!

@wolfrock she wrote on her website a couple years ago, that sadly a week after recording this song, her mom committed suicide. i think her mom's memory has a lot to do with her album that just dropped a few weeks ago. She has a music video out for a song she wrote for her mom called "Evergreen". You should check it out. Beautiful song. Also, she just did a NPR Tiny Desk concert with a few songs from the new album. Really awesome performance.

The head back wailing reminds me of a middle eastern keening at funeral. Complete and total despair.

I remember stumbling across this video before. She does have a great voice, doesn't she? She sure brings the emotion too...big time! Actually, one of the most emotional performances I have ever heard. Her "raspity" sound is great too (I like the way her performance has caused you to make words up to describe her haha!
