Yeah. I was obsessed with him. I was 16 and actually listening to him on my headphones in the backseat of the family car when it was announced over the radio he had died in a helicopter crash. The crazy thing was we were on a family trip going to the area in Wisconsin where he played the night before.

Prince was great. There are many who are great. Then, there was Stevie Ray Vaughan. That's my opinion He's my number 1. Everyone has their favorite, and he's mine.

The worst "celebrity" death of all. Had waited 6 years to see him live. Finally that day came. I was right in front of him. His sweat dripped all over me from the stage! He died two weeks later. Still not over it. Stevie is the pride of Texas. Thanks for reacting to my favorites, BP: Madchild and SRV. Dope musicians.

I feel this. When Cliff Burton from Metallica died, I had just seen him live 7 months or so before. I was shook. SRV also stung just like most of Skynard passing and Bon Scott. 😢😢😢

He makes you forget how really great the bassist and drummer are

I'm a huge Hendrix and SRV fan. Stevie wore his influences on his sleeve. He was a huge fan of Hendrix along with the 3 kings (BB, Albert and Freddie) as well as Lighting Hopkins, his brother Jimmy, and others. Stevie may be the only person to have ever walked the earth that could out-Hendrix Hendrix. The aforementioned players were the innovators. Stevie took their ideas to the next level.

The only artist who consistently makes my jaw drop. He was other worldly. And that guitar was WELL traveled. ❤

I saw Stevie Ray on the soul to soul tour, i was totally clean and sober, i came out of there walking about 4 feet above the ground... Ive been to a lot of concerts and played a lot of gigs over the years, but Stevie Ray was something else. It was impossible to separate the man from the guitar, they were one.

I saw him twice, and I think he could play anything. He was one with the guitar. My top choice.

The thing that sets SRV apart (for me) can be summed up in 3 words: Watch the Knobs. Most guitarists set their tone and volume knobs before a given song, then play all the way through the song with those same settings. SRV tends to adjust those settings several times WITHIN a given song to get his guitar to produce the EXACT sound he wants for that particular portion of the song. Between the knobs, pedals, string bending, and pick placement over the pickups, SRV gets EVERYTHING he possibly can out of his guitar.

Was around for Jimmy Hendrix. Stevie Ray. Was just beyond words. I got goosebumps when I heard Stevie Ray play this. ❤

I talked a friend into going to see Stevie Ray just before he hit it big. Almost 40 years later when I see him, the 1st thing he does is thank me.

He’s the perfect combination of very technically gifted and someone who loves and feels every note.

Stevie is absolutely amazing. I always wonder why he doesn't get more praise. I don't hear anyone talk much about him. I'm no musician but I know I was in shock when I saw him on the guitar. Then he started to sing and my mouth fell open!!! Super special talent.

No debate. He is the greatest. Straight up easily greatest.

Stevie was the greatest musician I have ever seen and I am a drummer! He wen’t to another place he didn’t just have great chops it was his soul it was like he was floating on stage. It is impossible to describe but I know I have not or never will see that again in my lifetime and doubt anyone will long after I am gone.

He never read music. He never played the songs exactly the same. He was from another world!

He could do it all on guitar, and in my opinion, was a very underrated singer. He's in my top five, for sure. I've always wondered how his music would have evolved if he'd lived.

He's hands down my favorite! The main difference for me, is I can listen to him all day.

Stevie loved and respected and was inspired by Jimi but he is an artist with his own body of work, his own compositions that showcase his abilities both as a vocalist as well as guitarist. Everything from this same venue is 🔥. My absolute favorite creation of his Riveria Paradise from this set. It was created after Stevie's own rehab and recovery and dedicates it to all those still suffering in any way. It is soothing balm for your soul and feels like a warm and golden hug from this man's soul✨🌟⭐️✨. It is an instrumental but his message hits you on all levels. He spent the last 4 years of his life helping show others how and why to get sober. He always took time to help, encourage and inspire sobriety. Thanks for bringing this today✌️👋💯

My top 5 changes but SRV is always there! Prince was an amazing guitarist! You should check out the performance of “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” tribute for George Harrison’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! It was epic! Prince?The solo of "While my guitar gently weeps" is the only time you'll see Prince go crazy on guitar.Prince top 100,maybe top 75,but few put him higher than 50 or so.Prince could play virtually every instrument known to man,but guys like SRV put 5-plus hours a day into THE GUITAR!

It can’t be over stated how much of a fan Stevie was to Jimmy Hendrix. SRV actually went to Jimmy’s father and asked permission to do this song. Not only was it granted but he’s actually using Jimmy’s wawa pedal.

to see him all fresh and healthy in this performance was everything - he'd been thru his battles w addiction and had rediscovered he could play w/o all that stuff and to lose him after that awakening still breaks my heart - the man and the music we all didn't get to experience breaks me. I'll never forget that day, a buddy came out from the shop office telling us he was gone, all I could do to stay standing was lean on my beam I was welding, put my head in my welding mask and ball 😭😭😭😭 such an amazing soul ❤❤❤❤

Saw Stevie Ray in 1986, one of the best concerts ever!! My sister and I had to get up dance!! Awesome, I’m so happy and blessed to have seen him and Double Trouble! The best! RIP Stevie Ray!💜

I lived in Dallas in the 70s and 80s and saw hime several times. one of the greatest if not the best guitarist ever. unfortunately he was killed in a helicopter crash in august of 1990. he was leaving and event where he played and perished in the crash. so sad to see such an amazing musician die so young

SRV speaks for himself on this incredible performance. Props to Chris Layton on drums and Tommy Shannon on bass - - Double Trouble. How those guys knew how to keep SRV grounded and on time during his solos is way beyond me. As I much as the rock and blues world was devastated by the sudden loss of SRV, I always felt so bad for Chris and Tommy. They lost their best friend and their future in the blink of an eye. I''ll be traveling thru Dallas in a few months. I'm carving out some to time to stop and visit SRV's grave. May he rest in peace.

Prince was an extremely gifted musician. A lot of instruments he mastered. But I'm from 20 miles from where SRV was from so Stevie will always be the best guitarist ever

if you notice Stevie's whammy bar is on top at the low E position instead of it being on the bottom . He also plays 13 gauge strings , they look like piano wire . Still he manages to break them with some of the bends he does . He has large and powerful hands . I heard that he had actually super glued his pads on his fingers back on for a concert !!

There's a video of him at the Cotton Club and he held his hand up with fingers towards his face as if to say "shhhh". You can see the pads of his fingers if you look closely, they're all steel gray and gnarly from the strings. Chris Layton said Stevie would use a tiny dab of super glue on his fingertips and then touch his palm to tear off skin to make a patch. After it dried he'd smooth it with a nail file, then try to collect a bit of oil on his fingertips from touching his face, or Chris's, to soften the patch a bit. Stevie was one of a kind!

Greatest to ever do it imo

IMO, Stevie is one of the most gifted guitarists of all time, especially in the blues genre. You should endeavor to listen to all of the past and current greats who describe what they thought of Stevie. One living guitar legend, Eric Clapton was in awe of Stevie. Eric said that he had never seen a guitar player more at one with his ax than Stevie was. He said Stevie had the incredible ability to channel music from his mind and directly to his hands. Eric also said that Stevie was the only guitarist he knew that could play for very long periods of time without stopping to take a break. There is a story where Eric was invited to play in a concert that also included Stevie. Eric was the marquee player. Stevie played before Eric and when it came time for Eric to play he couldn’t bring himself to go on stage. When he was asked why he said, “How am I supposed to follow that?” There are many of the past greatest blues players such as Albert King and B.B. King that knew and played with Stevie and who praised his awesome talent. There are youtube videos of these men telling their stories about how much they respected and admired Stevie’s other worldly talent. Albert King was one of Stevie’s most influential mentors. There is a current blues guitarist and singer that doesn’t get enough recognition as being one of the very best blues players ever to play. That man is, Joe Bonamassa. Joe was a childhood phenom. He happened to have had the honor of sitting in with blues legend, B.B. King when he twelve years old. Stevie Ray Vaughn is one of Joe’s idles. The late great, Gary Moore was also one of Joe’s idles.

Its always subjective when asking people who's the gretest guitarist, but for me it's Stevie Ray because he can shred or make you cry, his heart & soul is in every note and he plays what he feels so every performance is unique. Prince was top tier; so is David Gilmore, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, and Hendrix of course. But dont forget Glen Campbell and Roy Clark, who were mostly known as country artists but were amazing on acoustic (Campbell was part of the famous group of studio artists known as the Wrecking Crew before becoming a star in his own right, and he had a gorgeous voice too). But hands down, Stevie is my #1.

SRV will always be #1 in my heart. Please realize his is also playing rhythm 😮

SRV ..Jimi Hendrix.. joe Satriani.. Steve Vai.. Jimmy Page.. Yngwie Malmsteen... BB King.. Eric Clapton.. Chuck Berry.. Eddie Van Halen.. Jeff Beck.. Carlos Santana.. Tony Iommi.. Prince.. Tom Morello.. Buddy Guy.. David Gilmour.. Angus Young and Malcolm Young.. Ritchie Blackmore... John Lee Hooker... just to name a few.. iv'e been playing for over 30 years and in my view these people are up there but Music is so diverse that there are guitarist out there for everyone... they should all be respected in their own field and what they bring to your ears. It's not about playing fast or slow or complicated or loud or smooth... it;s how it sounds to you that matters.

All of that wear on his guitar HE put on it. That was his number one for a long time. A LOT of miles and gigs on that ax. He used HEAVY strings and he played that guitar HARD.

And like others have said he probably played this a little bit different each time....depending on his mood? He is simply amazing.

Prince is a hugely underappreciated and underrecognized guitarist. Watch the movie Purple Rain. It's a great movie with an amazing soundtrack that represents some of the best of Prince. I'm a 66 year old white guy who became musically aware in the early 60's with the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and Motown.

SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Prince, Duane Allman (The Allman Brothers)... all are amazing and worth checking out

I don't think I could ever say any guitarist is the best of all time... but I can tell you that he has been in my top 3, despite the numerous changes I've made in tastes and appreciation. I've played for 18 years now, so my understanding has evolved a bit over the time... and still... it doesn't matter what criteria I have for "the best", SRV just remains in the top

I'm 72 yrs old I a so blessed to have experienced JIMI twice in Houston Tx. AWESOME.

I was a child of the late 60s and 70s. Coming of age then. So many good bands and singers. Fleetwood Mack, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin. I could go on and on. The music was so good then. I am 71 now and have such good memories of the music. Some music is good now but not like then. It was a music revolution.

That was an awesome tour. I caught 3 shows on it.

I was hooked after hearing Cold Shot. The day of his passing was the day my first daughter was born. Very bittersweet. Took ages before I could listen to his music again without sadness. Now I listen and love it !

Stevie Ray Vaughn burst on the scene and immediately was named Best Guirarist by Guitar Magazine. And again the next year. And again the next year. Then Stevie died. He is a legend.

It’s not hard to argue that SRV was the best guitarist to ever wield and electric guitar. He made that damn thing sing. I could watch this a million times.

Top guitarists are like climbing Everest, if you are there you are there, SRV did it solo with no oxygen! Twice in one day.

BB King said said in an interview that most guitarists played words he said himself playing sentences but Stevie played paragraphs, Eric Clapton said the first time he heard Stevie on the radio he said I have to know who that is by the end of the day and he never felt like that, Albert King said he did not like to play with other guitarists but he loved playing with Stevie, Jeff Healey said he loved playing with Stevie because it never felt like a competition, in the guitarist community the on going debate is Jimmi or Stevie the GOAT Stevie picked up where Jimmi left off and made it better.

you need to watch the one where his guitar strings breaks and he keeps playing the song with out missing a beat and then swaps guitars without a pause in the song. Stevie the GOAT. songs "look at little sister"

I’ve seen grown guitarists cry trying to learn some of his songs like Scuttle Buttin, Rude Mood, and Couldn’t Stand the Weather.

I was fortunate to have seen SRV, 3 times in the 80s, and enjoyed his music and videos on MTV. So it was the most heartbroken I've ever been over the death of a rock star before and after. If he could have gotten better with his liver, etc. he would have been beyond killer and the greatest guitar player of all time. So to me, SRV is my personal fave. Jimi Hendrix led the pack for all those who came after him and they just kept getting better from his influence. So, personally, Jimi is above the 5 simply from his innovative and genius guitar work that set the stage. After that the 5 to me are; SRV, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, Prince. IMO

There are and have been so many incredible guitarists and only a very few have become huge legends in their own lifetimes legends, SRV is one of the top ranking giants of their art.

There's a good Prince - Epic Guitar Solo Compilation in 7 minutes. Prince has so much badass guitar work in the background of his songs.

The prior owner of SRV'S guitar was Christopher Cross ("Sailing", 1981). SRV bought it at a shop where Cross had used it as a trade-in.

I've read that in SRV's biographies. Stevie was always going into a shop he liked and would play the guitars. When he tried this one, he wanted it. The owner of the place asked him why he wanted that old ugly beat up thing and Stevie told him it just feels right. It was his favorite from then on. It had😅 been traded in by Christopher Cross. It sure had a beautiful tone.

Speaking of Prince, he was playing at a Tribute for George Harrison. Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Dhani Harrison and Prince did the song My Guitar Gently Weeps. Prince’s solo was amazing.

I was lucky enough to actually see SRV live in 1987. Amazing show !!

SRV was a pinnacle guitarist back then. His music and guitar skill still inspires so many. I used to ski at Alpine Valley back in the late 80's on one side and go to concerts on the other side of the mountain at the Alpine Valley Ampitheater. That is the same place he died. Helicopter caught in ski lift lines on takeoff where the pad was situated that day. Eric Clapton gave up his ride to Stevie so he could meet his next tour leg.

Greatest all time. People have no idea how technical he really was. He used so many genres.

FYI that is a 2nd hand guitar he's playing and belonged to recording artist Christopher Cross prior to it be given to SRV by the owner of a guitar shop in Austin TX. But SRV called it his "Number One" and his "first wife". And as intimately as he played it, you can see why he called it his wife.
