This track is literally 5 straight minutes of Nas snapping. You just don't get that in modern rap anymore.

Illmatic for me, is the best hip hop album of all time. Raw, gritty, lyrical, with great production. There is no album other than wu tang 36 chambers that even comes close.

“Sleep is the cousin of death” is actually a proverb basically when someone is asleep it’s like a dead person anything can be done to you whilst you are asleep and not necessarily not getting sleep brothers!

Acc to him, he wants to work hard and make all that money he can while he is alive. During sleep he can't work and therefore he can't earn, just like when he is dead. So therefore sleep is the cousin of death. It's basically inspired from a P B SHELLY quote. I can't remember it rn This is my opinion, there can be other perspectives too.

What I like about nas is that when he raps about about situations in the hood it's not just about he and his crew carrying guns or running up of fools or laying bros down. He also raps about how it's so crazy in the ghetto he and his crew isn't either. "In broad daylight stick up kids they run up on us" "When we use to say that out of town N*ggas chased us" it adds authenticity

Sleep in this context is not literal so don't low brow it, Nas refers to sleep as slipping that can lead to your demise, like pride comes before a fall.
