It’s only comforting knowing that half the band were Latino…Tom Araya (Chilean) and Dave Lombardo (Cuban). And yes…Tom was raised Catholic. I loved his take on one of their album titles GOD HATES US ALL (“God doesn’t hate…it’s a great f*cking title.). They were always pointing a mirror at humanity, which has been, as is, nasty at its worst. But metal was ALWAYS the catharsis.

Any song of Arise played off of their Under siege concert recording with Max hopping around the stage like Bugs Bunny on a red bull overdose should be enough to see what the band's about in terms of sheer energy.

When someone writes a book or makes a movie about something evil, they rarely get accused of being Satanic, but for some reason, when the same subject matters are put to music, there are those who lose their minds, accusing them of being Satanic, cultists, or glorifying terrible things. The Big 4 thing pretty much just meant the 4 who were selling the most records and concert tickets between 1984-89. I hope you will check out the band Testament soon! "Disciples of the Watch" is a great classic era Testament to hear.

Hi Aileen, I'm a 53 year old metal head from Melbourne Australia. I feel blessed to have been a metal fan from the mid 80s onward. I didn't see Slayer until their later years, but they are truly Kings of metal. I met Kerry King at a meet and greet in Melbourne (off the top of my head I can't remember what year) You are so right when you say people have no idea what the band members are really like. They are too quick to judge a book by its cover. Love your reaction shows. Metal Church is a band you might like from the 80s. Woukd love to see more Orbit Culture. Like 'Behold' or North Star of Nija. Cheers from Downunder 🤘😎🤘

Great reaction. This is the first Slayer song I ever heard and I was hooked instantly. Slayer has always unapologetically done what they wanted to and how they wanted to do it. Don't like it then don't listen to it was their motto. 3 common song topics are war, serial killers and Hell/Satan/Anti Christianity. I saw them live 4 times. In 1988, 1991, 2015 and 2018. The first time was August 31 1988 at the Felt Forum in NYC. Yeah, The "Seat Cushion Riot" show. This concert is known to alot of Slayer fans because it was bootlegged. Recorded on a camcorder.. The entire concert is on KZread now. Search "Slayer NY 1988". You can watch the whole show or individual songs. It shows the utter chaos of a Slayer show and you'll see Tom trying to reason with a totally out of control audience before Angel Of Death. It was the last song they played. The show got cut short because the venue was getting destroyed. Seat cushions were flying everywhere. Venues getting destroyed was very common especially small venues in the 80s.

I remember listening to Reign in Blood… and back then we were all like WTF is this insanity… but it was glourious. Especially how the album broke the norm of basically all metal albums had to have lots of reverb. This is one the main factors is was such a punch in face first time you heard it. You really should check out Epidemic from Reign in Blood. It’s one of the “slower” songs on the album… but it has such as sinister feel. And Hardening of the Arteries from Hell Awaits… a real facepuncher song 😜 And if you really wanna hear Dave Lombardo bring his A-game on drums… then song Seasons in the Abyss is the way to go.

  • @ArchieArpeggio

Big four is the biggest four bands whom started this style at the same time. Also they knew each other and had tours together. Testament is way better but they started later in the scene so they are not the "original" at that scene. Also Dave Mustaine played in Metallica first and Kerry King played in Megadeth at the begining so there are very thight connections on those four bands. Also producer Jon Zazula involves at least with Metallica and Anthrax. Without him there wouldn´t be such a big connection with Anthrax. All other three bands were from bay area thrashers from west cost and Anthrax is from east coast New York. But yes, Testament is way underrated band generaly. They still make kick ass albums.

NICE! Finally you're fully initiated in Slayer. The most awesome thrash-metal song for all times. ) What can I advise? - all songs of this band are shredding. If you want to see them live - check out Raining Blood from Still Reigning (2004) for example. If you want to check out their music videos - check out their tryptich of videos with unite screenplay: Repentless, You Against You, Pride And Prejudice (if you'll do this - you'll be the FIRST youtuber who reacted for all three of them).

Hey! I just saw your KoRn video (I know, a bit late) and I wanted to recommend some more KoRn songs, IF there will be more reactions to KoRn, I personally would appreciate one of the following songs: Twisted Transistor (It's a fun song) Daddy (this one is REALLY heavy, not from a music viewpoint, but because of the TOPIC, it's really sensitive) Black is the soul (a "newer" (2016) song of KoRn but I think it is a good repesentation as to how they evolved)

I'd say their music is about 'the problem of evil' in philosophy, generally. Fundamentally pessimistic and about the darkside, so a lot of songs about serial killers, atrocity, hell, societal corruption. Without any holding back; I don't think they ever did anything merely for shock though. Jeff said he was thinking about Nazis as a kid because of collections his father had from the war. It's not something easily digested so he makes a song about it; I think their* record label dropped them over this. He did not care. R.I.P. Jeff. Frankly the lyrics in Psychopathy Red are even more outrageous. *edit, typo

I was lucky enough to see Slayer many, many times. I could say a lot about those experiences, but the feeling that best sums it up is this: Right before a Slayer show started, I always felt pretty nervous. Even though I'd seen them before, even though I'd been to a ton of other metal shows, I got just a little bit anxious. I have a generalized anxiety disorder, and the feeling I had right before a Slayer show was very similar to what happens before I have a panic attack. That sounds like a bad thing, right? And I mean, yeah. It was kind of scary. But once they started playing, and the decibel level was through the roof and the bass was vibrating my rib cage, a huge wave of relief and - believe it or not - a massive sense of community with all of the other people there, washed over me. I've had similar feelings at other metal shows, but it was always most intense with Slayer. I also owe them a huge debt because, being the most extreme of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, they both played huge North American tours on a regular basis (so I'd have an opportunity to see them once, sometimes even twice a year), and they also brought extreme metal bands like Behemoth, etc., on tour with them - giving me a chance to see some pretty gnarly (in a good way) bands that might not have toured my city very often otherwise.

In their time, Slayer was outsider music. Teens were institutionalized and medicated for listening to such. I loved their music because it is original and raw. Their talents are legendary. The guitar riffs and drummers speed is perfect and unparalleled. The fact that they can seamlessly blend all these chaotic forces makes their skill all the greater. They have empathy for the suffering of humanity.

As an oldster, I was only 15 in 1986 but by god it was a golden time for thrash metal being released: Metallica "Master of Puppets" (although I still have a soft spot for "Kill 'em all") , Megadeth's "Peace sells..." although again, just a year before they'd released "Killing is my Business..." , and the magisterial "Reign in Blood" by Slayer - followed up by "South of Heaven" a few years later. Anyway, this and a lot more all blew my tiny little mind. It warms my heart that your enjoying so much that was an integral part of my own musical journey!

Dave was fantastic in Slayer, a legend. We used to blast this on my best friends crazy stereo back in the day...it was so loud in the bottom of the split level bungalow that the neighbours started to complain that they could here it clearly in their house. Guess it pissed them off...MUHAHAhahahahah! So you like aggressive drums and chaotic sound? I got something for you then... Here is another legend in metal drumming...he goes by the stage name of Frost. They say he sounds like a machinegun...and this is probably a great example of it. There are so many little nuanced things he's doing in this at high speed that it's almost lost on most on the first listen. This is him in a side project 1349. He's been with them for years. Apparently the band used to share the same rehearsal building as his main project...the legendary "Satyricon". He heard them playing and asked if he could join. The singer was drumming at the time so it freed him up to concentrate on being the front man. 1349 - Celestial Deconstruction kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXmM17R6fprdfco.html Hope you're ready for it. Cheers!

You got a bunch of information correct that a lot of non metal fans get wrong. The lead singer, Tom Araya (Tomás Enrique Araya Diaz) was born in Chile. He is Catholic. Other members have spoken about their Christian beliefs as well. To the uninitiated, metal sounds like a bunch of disorganized noise but the musical complexity, speed, and tightness of the members through time change ups and tempo are truly amazing. A lot of these artists function at a level of intelligence that is underestimated by most. I’m glad you enjoyed the experience

I was at this concert at Oakland civic arena if you know the place you know what I’m talking about the most insane concert I’ve ever attended! Yes they were very vocal about what they thought was wrong with society at the time Spirits in black is my all time favorite but a few others crooked cross, silent screams, expendable youth! Have to admit the second I saw you I was like fuck she’s just riding the trend but I could see it in your reaction they got you! I’m 50 and I still feel my skin start to crawl and the emotional release coming as soon as I hear slayer! Feel like I will jump out of my skin! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

You said if we ever saw them live, what was our experience. I saw them live in 2015 and that was like the scariest shit I ever saw. I mean that shit was wild. I had a balcony seat, and looking down at the floor general admission floor was just madness. Once Slayer hit the stage I was seeing bodies getting tossed left and right. I’m not even exaggerating, it was like bodies were going into the air above head level and landing in different places than they were thrown. I mean obviously they were being launched into the air or something like that, but they would go up and land somewhere a few feet away. Like if you could imagine people briefly crowd surfing, that’s kinda what it was like. People were getting passed around and the security guards would grab any of them in their reach and pull them out. Not like they were in trouble and being kicked out, but more like they were pulling the people into safety. And as soon as the people would be successfully pulled out, they would run back around and just jump right back into it. And the mosh pit got so damn huge it consumed like 1/3 of the whole crowd I would say. It was intense, but was one of the funnest concerts I’ve been to. The most memorable moment for me was when they performed the song South of Heaven (a good one to react to by the way, it’s another one of their top songs). The opening riff is just kinda slow and thick and hellish sounding. And I remember standing there in the dark and were all hot and sweaty and filled with energy, and the way that riff rang out through the hot, sweaty darkness was just electric. The atmosphere was so thick, I can’t even really describe it. It was awesome.
