Je connais quelques phrases, mais par force de l'avoir entendu. Je ne suis pas un fan de Sardou. :-) I found his position too conservatives, sometimes nationalist, for me. But true, he's a famous singer in France. One cannot be liked by every ones.

This song is used to close any party, wedding fest, student party... Everybody holding each other by the shoulder, jumping and turning, shouting the chorus as hard as you can. And the verses we sing only lalala as nobody really knows the lyrics. I can tell you that after a Connemara you have no energy and no voice left.

This song is about the Irish spirit of independence. And as you can tell, it has a very big Celtic inspiration. It is a French song traditionally played at the end of a party by the DJ to announce that the party is soon over or at least that the DJ is leaving. The song is borrowed from resistance and invites the last revelers to dance like a last stand.

As a French girl with Irish roots I have my own interpretation of that particular song. It is all about Irish independence and the scars from the civil war. Michel Sardou used to write very political songs. He has been involved in many polemics because of his political opinions and many songs are to listen ( read) « second degree » as they are mostly sarcastic like « the old time of colonies » that is a denunciation of what happened there. About « les lacs du Connemara » it is a painting of life in Ireland at the early 80’s, a romantic place with a dark past and the physical wound in the north ( black clouds coming from the north) if you need an explained translation just ask me ! I am very emotional with this song as it is a bridge between the two parts in me the French singer, the Irish history and music. And you can believe me it was not simple to find a song with my very Irish name in France (and also someone saying my name correctly 🤪)

Michel Sardou was touring in Ireland with his musicians and producers when after a long hard's work day, they jokingly decided to write a song about Ireland. But, none of them knew the country that much. They went to bed. Early on the next morning, the producer went downtown looking for information in tourism offices and came back with loads of flyers about Ireland. The band laughed a lot and decided to write the song just for fun. It turned out to be a B side on a record but the lyrics were kind of part of irish history/civilization and it became a great hit, one of the top ten here in France.

He was so much praised for the wonder of his voice he decided eventually to make a name for himself in music industry. My favorite songs from is long list of material are Musulmes and Le bac G. Michel Sardou is perfect for reaction channel, because...he's a reactor himself (just jocking, but when he speaks on tv, most of the time he speaks like he thinks and sometimes it's bordeline because he's got some ideas not really common comparing lots of artists, lot of his songs are also pointed because of the lyrices not very politically correct). But he's one of the big old french singer. Fun fact: This song is like an hymn, every french people knows at least the "riff" and a lot of parties end with everyone singing it as "la lala lala lalalalala" ...even more when everyone is drunk and happy :-)
