"Countermelody" is the word very appropriate here. Actually, Agnetha recorded her vocals in a very advanced pregnancy, lying on a bed. That's why her voice in this song is a little different.

So so stunningly beautiful ♥ Gorgeous record by The Gods of pop. No no no they weren't not more simpler days then, it was much harder then nd Abba had to put up with a backlash against them because the music was so beautiful nd melancholic. They were way ahead of their time nd they set the standards for todays music.

Thanks for the ABBA. This was one of their favorite songs to pull off in a tight pinch. They could fall into this one with just Benny on piano and Bjorn on guitar and song every bit as good as here. It's from Benny/Bjorn first crude experiment at musical theater "The Girl With Golden Hair". They performed it on I think their 77 tour. The other songs are "I Wonder". "I'm A Marionette" and "Get On The Carousel". Like I said it was pretty crude and about a small town girl went for fame and became trapped by it. All the songs were put on albums except for Carousel which you can get a glimpse of in "ABBA the Movie". I guess most of them from pretty early on were feeling trapped by ABBA.

We are quite lucky to have all these Abba films (recorded on 16 mm photographic film, not on video tape). The music video as we know it today wasn't a thing in the 70's. Back then they were regarded as promotional material that might come in handy - more of a curiosity than a necessity. Now we know that it was a stroke of genius.

This amazing song sounded even better live, there are a couple of live versions out there, the singing is absolutely exquisite there. Check out their 1978 Japan special (they ended it with a live rendition of this song with orchestra) and also there is one from Dick Cavett show, fully live.

If you want a more odd Abba song you can try I'm a marrionette. It is part of the same mini musical. This is Abba doing "scary progressive rock". The girl discover her musical talent in thank you for the music. Leaves home in I wonder and get caught up in the music industry and feels like a marrionette that the directors push around.

"Thank you for the music" has many interesting details There is a video report to Björn and Benny at 1976 Christmas time there the reporter asks them if they have a preview of a song and there they play the melody (without lyrics) of the future "Thank you for the music" how several already said "Thank you for the music" is the first song of the mini musical that ABBA performed on their 1977 Tour of Europe and Australia there it has other lyrics, which even mention 'John & Paul' (The Beatles) and Agnetha sings in Doris Day style The song is at the end of "ABBA The Movie" and is part of "ABBA The Album" with the version you did here and also with the Doris Day version. "Thank you for the music" it's a very special song for the blonde singer Agnetha she just came back from Australia shortly after she got pregnant with her second child When it was time to record it, she was in a very advanced stage of pregnancy, and to sing it she had to do it in a more forced position When you see her in each presentation, Agnetha's face seems to transform with joy when interpreting "Thank you for the music": her gestures, her looks and her pouting are unmissable "Thank you for the music" it was used as the last number of a TV presentation It's like an ABBA hymn and classic wasn't a single, but should have been the 3rd single of "ABBA The Album" After the success of "Chiquitita" in Spanish-speaking countries, ABBA also recorded it in Spanish and it was a great success in my country Argentina. And the ABBA album in Spanish language was called just like that "Gracias por la música" In my personal opinion "Thank you for the music" is in my top 10 of all ABBA songs, for good lyrics, beautiful melody and greatest interpretation by a carismatic Agnetha and it is the last live performance of ABBA, in that section sung almost 'a cappella' at the end of the last interview of ABBA in 1982

I recommend "The Visitors". It's from their 80s album "The Visitors"and way different. Sounds a bit mystical . BTW Simplicity, positive vibes, musicality means good melodies and arrangements may be outdated, but upbeat sound can lead to very emotional and uplifting songs. Seems that the autotune generation cannot deal with it anymore, 'cause they are busy with being cool and software generated songs. 🙃

  • @robertwill23

good melodies cannot be outdated. since 1980s sound and groove became a priority over good melody. thats main issue in modern music. one note melody is common now in pop music. and modern music is way more simplistic than music of 60s and 70s if you take away all that fancy digital sound design and autotune gimmicks. even average disco song of 1970s was more melodic and musical than current pop.

Agnetha was pregnant and ordered to rest, but it didn't work out that way. ABBA had a record to finish. A bed was brought into the studio and this studio version was recorded while she was laying down. There are live versions of this song that I think are better than the studio version - and for Chiquitita too. If you consider to react to Hole In Your Soul - choose the live version from Wembley.

Fun facts about ABBA: 1 - The band leader took a few years to release an LP because he thought it was absurd to have a table with eight channels and not be able to achieve the quality that the Beach Boys achieved with only two channels. Abba launched the concept of video clips. They gave so many performances that there came a time when it was impossible to sing live, so they hired a film crew and started recording in studio to distribute to television stations around the world. 3 - They after a while together formed couples, and after a while the couples separated and practically switched partners, the song "The winners takes at all" portrays one of those moments of rupture between them. 4 - After they split, Agnetha isolated herself in her residence, refusing to give interviews, even listen to the radio because she was afraid to listen to ABBA and relive the trauma. Now it looks like they're getting together again for a revival.

Color T.V.s came out in bulk in the latter half of the 1960s, I know, I was there. Also, no pixels, T.V.s were analog not digital but you could get a look at the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in the snow when a T.V. was not tuned into a station. Yes we were spoiled, I was there when Elvis was introduced to the world and the Beatles and hard rock, psychedelic, punk, prog, indi and on and on. There has been some good, even great music since the 90s, but not very much, music seems to have gotten stuck and not progressed since the start of the 21st century. Maybe ABBA,s epic comeback will kick some asses out there and we will start hearing some great music again. Oh, I have been a musician for 60 years and am encouraged and hopeful that great and exciting new music is on the horizon.

You´re reaction is interesting. In fact this song was one of three ones that were part of a so called "mini-musical". And your point of view about black and white and color tv in the 70s might be true as well. I don´t agree totally concerning the music. It seems to be simple but it is not really. They managed just like the Beatles bevore to let their sometimes uncommon at least not vulgar chord progresses appear simple and easy.
