VoicePlay don't block videos, they have no copyright issues, not signed to any label. In fact they encourage reactors to get more publicity. The same is true of Geoff Castellucci's low bass covers. He's the bass in VoicePlay. The money they use for these is all from their patrons of which I am one. There are some old live performances around but they haven't done touring since Covid and now this is how they make a living, and in the music industry today their videos have to be as professional as they can make them, so I guess that's why they do it.

The look is specific to the song. Voiceplay creates art and we think of them as the theater music group. For a complete contrast in visuals, consider their latest which is in my room by beach boys. It is produced but has a more intimate feel. For no production/one take stuff, check out their ACA top 10 Disney villains or ACA top 10 Disney side kicks. My favorite, which is produced but lovely and simple, is Tennessee whiskey. You can almost forget you aren't in the room with them. The one you just watched is highly produced to feel like the game/tv show, so definitely not one for an intimate feel. Don't give up on them after the one. They have a wide variety.

speaking of Tennessee Whiskey - first watch the produced one. It's awesome and lets you enjoy the music. But there is a full live cover (all recorded on someone's phone) as well, and it is impressively similar to the produced one (done at valley forge casino 12/20/2019). Maybe not reaction-worthy, because it is a bad recording, but it demonstrates how how close their live performances can be to the recordings. (And I echo what someone else said about Grim Grinning Ghosts. There is a live one taken in their hotel room and then a produced one that sounds just the same.)

They see these videos as art pieces .. and they do it all themselves, from arrangement through video edits... it's all them. On this one, Alexa reached out to them and asked for a collab - she filmed in Korea and they integrated it in Layne's studio, Pattycake Productions. (Layne is the beatbox) Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci, the bass, also has a personal channel with a lot more than vocal training videos. If you want to hear more of his work, maybe check his cover of Ain't no Sunshine, Country Roads, or Blackbird.

If I may, comparing live performances with KZread video is rather apples to oranges. There are live videos available for all of the top a cappella groups, but your choice was apparently for both a produced Pentatonix and VoicePlay video (and this VoicePlay video is probably their pinnacle of production, given that their feature, Alexa, was in South Korea when the video was made). If you wanted more of a live feel, at least initially, I'd respectfully suggest that you find some of their live performances- many of which are available on the aritsts' own channels. VoicePlay definitely does- all of their ACA Top 10 videos were shot live, without any production tricks beyond standard sound engineering. They also have a live performance of Grim Grinning Ghosts, and that's notable because you can compare it with the produced video of the same song, and see for yourself just how similar the performances are. Besides that, I'd suggest their cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", as well as their most recent cover of the Beach Boys' "In My Room." Geoff, the bass vocalist, also has 'solo' covers (noted thusly, because Geoff multitracks his voice, and with his 5 octave range is able to cover all the vocal parts in the arrangements) that are also well worth checking out.

@@TheMusicJunkieChannel You may claim to like produced videos but then you seem to spend a lot of time talking about how produced videos are so "produced" and it comes across as negative . That's why you are getting so many comments telling you to check out the live or less produced videos. In your description of the video you state that you were left "awestruck by VoicePlay" - now awestruck might mean something totally different across the pond, but keep in mind that with approximately 5x the number of KZread users coming from the USA vs. the UK, the bulk of your comments on a video by a US-based group are going to be US based. I think that perhaps you're accustomed to speaking to a different demographic that is less effusive than the commenters on these videos, and in general is less complimentary. That's fine, but then you come across as very defensive and condescending when talking about the use of "an article to describe something". Yes, we Americans tend not to use a generic article to talk about something that has a proper name, we use the name. I wouldn't use the Adam when talking about my friend named Adam, thus we don't use the Pentatonix to talk about the group named Pentatonix. I'm curious - Do you say The Led Zepplin, The Queen, The Pink Floyd to describe those bands?

@@TheMusicJunkieChannel Also, this particular video was done to emulate a particular, animated, TV show (Arcane), where this song is used as a theme. The show is, in turn, an adaptation of a particular very popular video game (League of Legends). The singers in this video are all dressed as characters in the TV show (the blue-haired girl in the story has periods of madness where she is lost inside her own mind, thus the parts of the video where she is dancing alone in darkness). Without that context, I can totally see how the look of this video would be distracting. But for fans of the show/game, the effort and detail they put into their production adds to the experience.

I agree that live usually is better than a produced video. In a music video, artists want to get it to sound as perfect as possible, to get the most impact. It's the sound people nowadays are used to hear, the produced sound. But that's also why people love going to live shows, to get the live sound! It's 2 completely different experiences, and I love both for separate reasons. Video for the best possible quality sound and visuals, and live for the raw sound and connection. ♥️

Every day I look for reactors who are experiencing Voiceplay for the very first time. You did not disappoint! The lineup has changed in the last three years. One founding member (1997) left in 2020 for undisclosed personal reasons. Another member was recruited by the US Navy to sing with them for five years. When he is on leave and able to return to Orlando, he is featured with them. The one with all the hair is the newest member, he came in in 2021. Still one member short, they use featured artists to fill the gap. They freuently used featured artists before the lineup change, but it is standard for them now. They used to tour extensively, but when the pandemic struck, they concentrated on their studio work. Suggestions for them: Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - amazing I Can't Make You Love Me - heartbreaking Then, anything else in the catalogue that strikes your fance. You've seen Pentatonix. You've seen VoicePlay. Now you have to stay in that circle of friends and check out the third of the greatest of a cappella groups, Home Free. Home Free also has a fantastic bass singer, as well as the greatest beatboxer you will ever hear. Just search their name, and choose from a couple hundred videos. Just one thing that I say for both VoicePlay (including Geoff's solos) and Home Free (including Tim's and Austin's solos) videos: do NOT assume the video is over because the song has ended. Many times there is an important message or an outtake at the end that just adds to the wonderfulness of the piece. Whoops. I almost forgot. You might want to start with Zombies vs Hillbillies - Survivor. Home Free and VoicePlay were both on season four of the Sing-Off. This is a number that was prepared for the show but never aired. They performed this later for the Sing-Off tour. The woman (I think her name is Honey) was with them only for the Sing-Off, and both groups have gone through a couple line-up changes since 2013-14. Home Free won season 4 of the Sing-Off. Pentatonix won season 3. Street Corner Symphony came in 2nd in season 2. Their bass singer, Adam Chance, is now the baritone/bass for Home Free.

Thanks for your reaction! I totally respect your stance on overproduced a cappella music. I happen to enjoy this one because I know the game and TV series, and I do like the theatrical video editing. I’m looking forward to seeing you react to more VoicePlay! Their version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” is my absolute favorite so far, followed closely by their cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On”. But choose any of their songs, you’ll find something wonderful in all of them! Home Free is also my other favorite a cappella group. I got to see them live twice in 2022, and will see them again every time they’re within driving distance! They also occasionally feature an instrument in one of their songs, but you’ll see it in the video when they do. Their beatboxer, Adam Rupp, is incredible and creates realistic instrument sounds - his ‘No-monica’ (vocal version of a harmonica) will blow you away! There are many live performance videos available, Austin Brown, their high tenor, joins Adam in a no-monica duet in their live performance of “Man of Constant Sorrow”. Some other suggestions would be “Ain’t Going Down til the Sun Comes Up” (you might need to grab the music video off their Facebook page, but you can post the reaction on KZread), “So Long Dixie”, “When a Man Loves a Woman”, “Elvira” featuring the Oak Ridge Boys, and the one that makes me laugh every time I see it - “The Butts Remix”. They've started doing more pro style videos in the days since covid happened and they had to stop touring. Some of my favorites with those are the Disney villains, Disney sidekicks and Disney heros but I think the one I like the most is top 10 Broadway. It's really old but it's hilarious and just fantastic! There's also a tiny little blooper reel at the very end of the vid after the credits that features Earl, a founding member that left in 2021 for personal reasons. One of the issues with Voiceplay live videos (except for those "ACA top 10 whatever" and some shorts, which ARE recorded live "by them") is that as far as I know there ain't no GOOD video/audio recording of those performances. Usually it's someone from the audience recording the song with a smartphone or something of the like, and you can easily "feel" that the real sound was oh so much better that "that" 🙂. There should be some live videos from the "Sing Off" show, but first it was many years ago and they improved a lot since, and second, in my VERY humble opinion, they weren't "at their best" there, as they were kinda "forced" to sing what they were requested to or at least "in the way" they were requested to by the format of the show. Again, my personal opinion, I don't actually know how these things work, but I've seen enough "contests" in various fields to think I'm not that far from reality. 🙂 Anyway... You can find videos of them live performing "Elvira", "Oogie Boogie song" (albeit incomplete, whoever recorded it started well into the song), Grim Grinning Ghosts, and a couple quite funny performances, like "Road trip" and "The Chicken Song". 🙂 I second the suggestion someone else already made, to watch their cover of "Nothing else matters" a cappella (or, as someone said in the comments, "a cappellica" 😁), but also some of their most iconic videos like "Hoist the colours", "My mother told me", "Halo theme" (including the spoken outro, with the reasons behind that specific video... Totally worthwhile IMHO), "The Dragonborn comes", "Warriors", Dream on (yes, Aerosmith cover...), "I can't make you love me"... And pretty much whatever else you find in their channel 😁. Ah, and don't forget "Wicked medley" and "The Greatest Show medley"... 🙂 As others already pointed out, Geoff ("Jeff") Castellucci has a solo channel as well, and his own performances there are quite interesting, as he "clones" himself in 4 or 5 characters (sometimes with different outfits and makeups), and sings all the parts, showing his beautiful 5 octave range. Well worth a look! 🙂 See you next time. 🙂

I 100% agree with your opinion of the sing-off. Geoff alludes to this in some interview sessions, too. They didn't feel like they could be themselves because the format did not lend itself to drama and comedy. Instead, it was about pop and dance. And they were forced to have a female lead, which relegated them to backup singers (and I think Honey did not have a good voice). They had to sing all popular pop that they didn't connect with the way they do the stuff they sing themselves. Singoff was just a terrible demonstration of their ability - and they still made it to the finals (losing to homefree) which shows how good they actually are. They are quirky and theatrical and just plain fun - plus they do some of the best arrangements, in my opinion. In fact, Homefree's arrangement of Elivra was done by Geoff! They are original, not derivative, despite doing covers, and it is that which makes them less popular than some other cover artists. I agree with you - the Greatest Showmen and Wicked medley's are excellent. Well, very little they do isn't. :)

Voice Play sounds JUST this good live. I was at WDW Christmas Party in 2016 and it's JUST this good. There are several "live' videos on KZread that show just how close to their video performances they are since there isn't a whole lot of tweaking of the vocals. (Honestly in the last couple of months they HAVE done more "production' on the sounds for the videos than they used to, but seriously Voice Play really IS the real deal). Watch Ogie Boogie's song and then find the Live version and you will see what I mean, have lots of fun enjoying the magnificent obsession.

Welcome to the rabbit hole! Some other VoicePlay classics are Nothing Else Matters, Hoist the Colours, We Don't Talk About Bruno, Carry On Wayword Son, Dream On, and Remember Me. Also, in addition to vocal instructionals, Geoff Castellucci (the bass) produces his own music videos. I can particularly recommend his covers of Ghost Riders In the Sky and Sixteen Tons.

Just come across this, and though i see it's already been mentioned...... Voiceplay are completely independent... Px and Home Free are backed by record labels, and money is no object, especially for a group like Ptx. So if a Ptx mv is simple, it's not for the lack of funds... However,. Voiceplay do almost everything.. The storyboard, lighting, production, editing, and everything in between... final mixing and makeup is outsourced..... so if their mv is well produced and professional, it's down to their own talent...... even though you said you didn't mean it was a bad thing being so well produced.... It sort of came out that way.... They don't actually have a permanent female in the group but often feature them. In this instance, AleXa is an award winning american/ Kpop star and filmed her part in Korea..... Also, being English myself (and having taught it many years ago).. Pentatonix wouldn't have 'the' in front.... The refers to an item or a specific... Pentatonix, Voiceplay, Home Free are names. It would be like calling me 'the Allison'... please don't take this as being too much or a personal attack. I'm just clarifying.... Maybe you should listen to a couple more Voiceplay mvs. They've recently covered , Nothing else matters, Valhalla Calling and Seven nation army. All independently produced to a professional standard. ❤ 🇬🇧

Sure all of voiceplay's music videos are produced and the audio we hear are the pre recorded and mixed versions of their vocals but they do have a lot of covers in which the video aspect of them are a lot more simple and probably more appealing to more people. You should definitely check one of their recent cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. It is a masterpiece of arrangement and isn't as produced as this one.

I think try some of thier other pieces because this one is a song associated with a computer game and tv show that sporned from it so of course it has been done in a very graphic, produced way. Yes they do have very high levels of production on everything but the way they come across varies from song to song to suit the style of that song. Currently they have four members of the group and add someone extra in for each track though one of their regular "guests" is an ex member who is currently off doing military service and it does rather feel like they are happy not to fill that spot perminatly. Having guest singers gives them a wide range of options too.

@The Content Junkie - Despite being a Pentaholic, I hadn't heard of VoicePlay until they did this collab with AleXa, because I was an AleXa fan first. Seems like most commenters are from the VP side, time to redress the balance: AleXa could be considered a TV Tropes "ascended fan", she started out making dance covers of Kpop songs, then won a couple KZread contest shows. When none of the contest organizers picked her up, the video production company (Zany Bros) said, "are you nuts? WE want her!" and CREATED a music label specifically to sign her! That should indicate how talented she is. As the first and so far only artist, they lavish its budget on her, but they are spending their money smartly!

I totally get where you are coming from preferring live productions. There definitely is a different feel. But I also love the artistry that goes into a more highly prodrvideo, especially with a group lie Voiceplay that has such attention to detail. As others have sais, there are so many videos to choose from. Their two latest, In My Room and Nothing Else Matters (which is seriously Grammy level arranging), both have produced videos but simpler and more intimate than this one. Both are great.

What makes the bass, Geoff, so special is his ability to sing both high and LOW. His overall range is A0-A5 (F#1-B4 in chest voice). Also, he has the ability to jump around his range and never miss a beat; many times, he is hanging with the tenors or slightly above them.

Nothing wrong with the song or how they covered it, it just didn't resonate with me personally. If you want to see the stuff with very little production, for VoicePlay look up Road Trip or The Chicken Song or, for some middle ground on that, check out Oogie Boogie's Song; for PTX, there's an amazing back-stage video somebody recorded on a cellphone, of them doing a private small-room performance of Daft Punk with no microphones or anything, and you can hear differences from the official MV because of the lack of mixing and such, but it's not nearly as different as you'd *expect* it to be.

I really don't understand people's issues surrounding production. Either the people that say "Oh, that is so produced" and the people who then say "Yeh, but they are just as good live." Both are true, neither is bad. It is a mater of style and choices and the sound they are trying to produce, no pun intended. Some songs are suited for a raw, low production sound. While other songs would not hit the mark with out more mixing, layering and production. Fact is, IMHO, they are just different styles and both are equally impressive. No amount of production will make a bad performance good, and stripping everything down on a song like this would still be impressive, but it would hit differently. Ive seen/heard interviews with both Layne and Geoff about how they use production techniques, compression, layering, etc, to get the sound they want. Everyone has different moods and tastes, I happen to LOVE the more produced stuff they do, I'm an EDM fan and am always impressed by what can be achieved in music production with today's technology.

But it's like jumping in the 70 minute of a football match, watch it for 5 minutes and use these 5 minutes as a conclusion for the entire match. Voiceplay is a journey. From low base to beatboxer. It would have been better if you could have started with songs like: Tennessee Whiskey, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Nothing Else Matters or In My Room. Proper acapella with a minimum production behind it. After them you would have a more open mind about this song, or productions like: We Don't Talk About Bruno, The Greatest Showman, If I Were A Rich Man, and many other absolutely extraordinary productions. 😉 Just like a football match. Yeah, I understand your reaction... 👍🏻👏🏻

“Oh good!” she says, rubbing her hands together with glee, “Someone who hasn’t heard Voiceplay before!” Voiceplay is not super picky about copyright so any nonsense you get will only come from KZread. You’re lucky your kitty just gets cuddly when you come home after “neglecting” her. My first cat would pee on my bed! If you like low notes and don’t like much production, you might enjoy The Bass Gang. It’s FOUR basses-all with extensive range so you’ll hear the upper harmonies as well. They’re all quite young-the youngest is still a teen and incredible already, both at singing and his arrangements are nuts! Anyway, they’re just getting going-only about a dozen songs out so far. And all of them have solo channels with really excellent music, plus one of them does reactions as well. Great reaction, and I appreciate your comment about production. I don’t like it so well mixed that it doesn’t sound “real.” I personally think this is one of the more produced pieces they’ve done because I think they were going for a certain sound, so you might like some of their other music better.

@@marshayoung9387 Depends what you call “studio.” They’re recording in their homes. It’s true they do not literally get together and sing (one lives in the Czech Republic, one in Egypt, and the other two are in different US states), but you’re still not talking about the layers of mixing, modulation, etc. that go on when a piece is professionally produced (Marwan is aces with post-production sound work, but he’s not trying to smooth it out to the point there’s no personality). With the exception of Hide and Seek, where they hired Ed Boyer to mix the sound (which he did brilliantly), their work is totally homemade.
