I saw Madonna in December & she performed this ballad BEAUTIFULLY!!! It was one of the many highlights of the 2 hour show 👏🏾🍿💯

My favorite Madonna song. I've always taken the lyrics to tell the story from the POV of Sean Penn's character in At Close Range, the movie the scenes are from. He *does* have a secret, and he's not sure he'll live to tell it.

There's a huge story behind how this song got to where it was and I know I've commented about elsewhere, but I can't find it. Pat Leonard wrote the track as part of a score for a film ("Fire with Fire") and Madonna was gonna write the lyrics to the theme song. Leonard got fired from scoring that film, but Madonna had Leonard play her the track anyway because Sean Penn (her husband at the time) was doing a film ("At Close Range") so she wrote the lyrics and the bridge, and they did the arrangement and recorded the vocal that day. It's true that the song was never intended to be sung by her-it was in a much lower key and it was only when Leonard, Madonna, Foley, and Penn reconvened at Foley's house later that evening did they the decide that not only would Leonard score "At Close Range" but also that Madonna should perform the song, which she was reluctant to. She did try to sing the vocal again, but Leonard went back to the original demo and that's the version that was used. As to what the lyrics are about, it's about AIDS, which was a death sentence back in the mid-80s when this was written. You wouldn't "grow old" and it was terrible, shameful "secret" that people had to "hide" and "lie" about, and even if you "ran away", "how would they learn" about your illness and death? She kinda admitted that on the Celebration tour when projecting pictures of people who've died of AIDS, while playing "Live to Tell".

Happy you’re back. This song I related to back then. During my dark years. It gave me hope that someone knew where I was coming from. It was just amazing how listening to this song got me through it. Awesome reaction.

So glad you are back to making reactions. This song has always stuck with me, something slower paced and different for young Madonna. I think maybe this is why it has remained in my memory.

Luv this track. I’ve always figured she is singing about some kind of inescapable childhood trauma. Knowing Madonnas life I presume it’s somewhat autobiographical perhaps her feelings about her mothers death and her fathers second marriage to their housekeeper not long after.

The movie is with Madonnas husband Sean Penn his character finds out the Christopher Walken is his dad in the movie and that his dad is a thief who later murders Sean character girlfriend played by Mary Stuart Masterson then Sean testified against his dad in court for the stealing and multiple murders done by Christopher Walken character

The young male actor in the film is named Sean Penn and that was her husband at the time so this song and video had extra meaning to her

Patrick Leonard asked her to provide the lyrics to the song and she recorded the demo on the first take, thinking it would be sung by someone else. But leonard and Sean Penn (her husband at the time) insisted on using her demo as the final product. It's a beautiful ballad.

I always thought she sounded out of tune with this one. I think this was before her singing lessons for Evita.
