At birth and in early childhood this structure is not fully grown, and so memory of birth is unlikely. What's interesting is that the brain structure for emotional memory, the amygdala, is mature in infancy - the outcome of these two facts being that an emotionally significant event during infancy may affect the way a child behaves later in life despite them not being able to remember the actual event.

We intentionally bought a few "analogue" musical toys for our two so that they could feel the vibrations, i.e. it's a mechanical thing but it's alive in a different way to other toys. Important for musicians!

My uncle was in a symphony orchestra and my Mom attended concerts and rehearsals quite frequently when she was pregnant with me. She had little interest in music herself and was their just to support my aunt who was frequently ill and needed assistance getting around. After I was born my aunt got better and she and my uncle were my primary baby sitters and their idea of baby sitting was putting me on the floor under a Steinway while world class musicians played. When I cried violinists in the middle of a piece would saunter over playing within inches until I calmed down then go back and sit down with the rest of the orchestra. In grade school I could hum entire symphonies but couldn't tell you the name of a single Beatles song. (This was in the 1960's). Sadly I never learned to play any instruments, only to appreciate with wonder.

This is not by Bach. The composer is Christian Petzold. It’s a common misconception. Bach put it in his Notenbüchlein (little music book), a collection he put together for his wife Anna Magdalena.

When my son was born I was a church musician, multiple services a week. He was very peaceful after he was born. The first Friday evening I was home I turned on Diane Bish’s television program. She talked about the organ and the town she was featuring that week. My son was in my lap. She jumped on the bench, cranked it up and cut loose. My boy whipped his head around to try to see the television, starring at it, trying to see. I laughed and said, “Well, I guess he wondered where all the music went.” We figured out immediately that he really enjoyed organ and choral music, and he became a skilled violinist in school. Blessings to you and your family.

Pretty soon Vinheteiro's son is going to need his very own BABY Grand Piano.

My great auntie's house had a small piano for children. I loved playing it every time we would visit. You're right. There's a big difference between hearing analog verses digital music.

Baby is clearly enjoying this. I think it is truly the best idea to introduce babies to music, very very softly, safely, low volume and gently at an early stage.

When I was 6 months pregnant I was at a party where a bagpiper started to play. Everyone started to dance. I stayed still to concentrate on the powerful movements made by my little one in utero. It was an amazing experience.

My daughter was barely seven months old at most when she discovered the joy of touching the piano keys (and other instruments at hand). She's turning two this week and still loves it to no end.
