The idea of "46 and 2" chromosomes is really more symbolic than scientific, representing the desire to evolve. The song heavily incorporates Carl Jung's ideas about the "shadow self" and how denial and repression of these "shadow parts" of ourselves inhibits from growing spiritually and emotionally. Karl Jung expounded on the idea that we needed to have awareness of our darker impulses, incorporate that shadow into our conscious selves and transmute the impulses of the shadow into positive action. And thank you for listening to an incredible song! I love your reactions, and I love the incredible attitude you bring to this corner of the internet. I've suggested this before, but you should really listen to this cover of the song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n41_rtiSd9THc5M.html It's done by a bunch of kids at the O'Keefe Music Foundation. It will allow you to see the intricacies of the song as it is performed, and it will allow you to experience the work of some very incredible kids. It's well worth watching, even if you don't do a reaction video! Shine on!

Google says: 46 and 2 is a theory of evolution and the premise is that humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes to 46. It's part of their "spirituality". Someone who has 46 & 2 reaches the Christ Consciousness. Essentially it is a sort of enlighten state. It allows a human to evolve to the next leveling being.

I don't care what background someone's from what color they are what music they like what genre they do it doesn't matter you can't argue, Tool makes badass music hands down some of the tightest s*** there is. Ogt down from '92 here. In short, this song is about being a better person pushing forward leaving the the old person "picking scabs again" feeling sorry for themselves in their own chaotic insecure delusions behind "evolving" to the next stage of you. Sure you'll get your more elaborate in-depth analysis of evolving to a higher "consciousness" yada yada from the gallery. Ultimately their songs is about what it means to you. To me, it means stop feeling sorry for yourself, get off your ass, and push through to be the better person. One of my favorite songs to work out to. This and Pushit it are IMO the two greatest rock songs of all time.

This song was about how Carl Jung and Floyd pointed out the underlining structure of our subconscious leading to a higher understanding of psychology. The transformation of the darkness in ones self into a deeper awareness what you do with it is up to the individual. This song is about healing. -INFJ.

To evolve to a higher level or higher consciousness of self and spirit and we must have our "shadow" our darkness and or fears to evolve. But tools songs always have dual if not tripple meanings and a huge part of how they are written allow space for the listeners interpretation and to connect with the listener on a deaper level

Okay, there's a lot that comes up in the comments about the meaning of 46 & 2 but that don't quite get or are reading things into the lyrics that aren't being said. I think what we can take from the lyrics and what they're referring to in Karl Jung's theory is that 42 & 2 chromosomes (that's 44 chromosomes (some can use a more exact definition of "chromosomes" here and two sex chromosomes) is what some very limited number of people have in the world today. To make a long story short, they see everything as one, including all people knowing what you're thinking by merely thinking. Like were all cells that make up the one body. At some point in human evolution another two genes were added that most of the rest of humanity now share--that's a 44 & 2 chromosome expression. in defining it, I'll let everybody insert their own definition of how we differ from the 42 & 2s. What Carl Jung suggested was that eventually we would add another two chromosomes whereby we would be able to see into our subconscious and wouldn't need to repress the usually unhealthy emotions that reside in "The Shadow Man," or subconscious. In facing our negative emotions, they won't then express themselves against others or in working against our own attempts to arrive at the truth. These people will have two additional chromosomes added resulting in 46 & 2 chromosomes. Now this is what I see in the lyrics. A complete Jungian explanation can be had by reading what he actually wrote.

I love....LOVE....watching people react to this masterpiece. People cannot help but marvel at the perfection that is this song. It gets inside of you and lifts you to a higher plane of existence. 46 & 2 is a Carl Jung theorem. Currently, humankind exist at 23 pairs of chromosomes. 44 & 2. The two is our sex determinant. Male or female. The rest make up our DNA. In jungian theory, Carl Jung surmises that we will reach a higher plane of existence. Essentially, we will grow two more chromosomes. This will put us at one with nature. Constructs like money, politics Etc, will seem petty, small and pointless. We will rise above the banality of these soulless, heartless, empty desires. We will evolve into...more. Most simplistic way I can put it, without writing a 20 Page thesis.
