The Battery is the reciprocal energy between the band and the fans, or the music. It has a double meaning as being the name of the street, Battery, where they played early shows.

You really can't pick a bad song from this album
This album is considered one of the five best metal albums of all time. I was 15 in 1986. I am not exaggerating when I say this album was everywhere. It helped Metallica land the opening gig for Ozzy that year. And remember, this was still at a time when radio stations would not play them, and they had made no videos for MTV. And yet still people knew about this album. That's how good it was.

Quite something from kids in their 20's and their 3rd album . But the music will speak for itself . Love ur reactions.

To be honest. 1) MOP is not a thrash album. 2) James Hetfield himself said that Metallica never was a thrash metal band.
I love the digital music age when you can listen to any song from any style any time but Master Of Puppets is an example of the value of listening to an album from front to back.

In past interviews James has mentioned the energy created between band and fans creates the battery. Also, the underground metal bands in San Francisco played at a club on Battery Street. They were all a tight bunch and were considered "family" and they couldn't be killed!

I bought it at age 11 on cassette. The album cover looked cool and I had never heard the 80's Metallica albums at that point. It blew my mind and definitely changed my life.
My favorite song on Master Of Puppet is Orion. It's an instrumental wrote by Cliff Burton and arranged by Lars Ulrich. This song is mostly like a metal version of a symphony. It passes trough the ears and go straight to the soul. Plus the level of technicity on the bass guitar is simply awsome. I recomend this one to you. Orion.
You absolutely must check out the live version from Seattle 89. Out of all the live Metallica songs the 89 version of this is mandatory to appreciate metal atmosphere back in that year.

My 3rd concert ever, 1986 in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena. Metallica opening up for Ozzy and I believe this was the first song they played that night. This album is pretty much playing on a loop in my car. I was 6yrs old when this album came out, can still remember my buddy and I chanting "Battery" . Cant wait for you to get to Orion, my absolute favorite.
Disposable Heroes is the best song on Master of Puppets in my opinion. The lyrics, the guitar, the drums, it all comes together for a deep and beautiful song.
I got into this album soon after it came out, so a long history with it. I can't put a finger on a favorite song because it works so well as an album a collection of songs. It's so well focussed, executed and delivered. Over 35 years old now and still sounding fresh as hell.

This is my favorite Metallica song. This is also my favorite Metallica album. Perfect from start to finish. They end the album on another super aggressive song " Damage Inc". The lyrics..."Pounding out aggression, turns into obsession" sums up Metallica perfectly. They play this even faster and more angry in their live in Seattle 1989 show. That concert is the epitome of the power of a Metallica concert. And yes the Battery is the energy created between the band and the crowd.Cannot kill the battery.. BATTERY! Fuckin BAT-TERY! While my favorite song is One, and fav album is Justice, this is the most "complete" album and while overall thrashy, gives so much variety and different aspects of metal.
Sometime in the mid 80’s I went to my a show and Metallica was the first of four bands to play. I knew of them but didn’t know much about them. They came on stage and I wasn’t really paying attention. My friends and I were doing what you do while waiting for the band you want to see come on. ( puff puff pass 😉) then they played this song and I immediately was paying attention and was blown away. I’ve been a fan ever since.
And NOW, Kiddo...now you see why us old grey haired grizzled Gen X Bastards wax so reminiscent about growing up in the 80s. This album was my first concert ever. Cliff Burton was friends with my best buddy's dad in Castro Valley, CA. I lived a town south in Hayward, CA. EPICENTER for this Thrash shizz. Little did I know at the time that the buddy of my Bro's dad that hooked us uo with free tickets to the show across the Bay was, in fact, the Bass Player himself. This would be the only concert I'd see him play. He was dead a few months later in a tour bus wreck in Europe. But THIS energy is what being a teenager in the 80s was ALL about. My son just turned 27 (born in 1996) so that should properly place me in the hierarchy of old-ness...but this was the Summer after the one where Marty McFly went Back To The Future, and it was THIS summer that (under the leadership of President Ronnie Ray-Gun) Maverick and Goose felt the NEED...the NEED...fer SPEED!!! Kenny Loggins' music fit well into that movie, but make NO mistake youngster...THIS shit RIGHT HERE...THIS was THE SOUNDTRACK to my Summer Vacation ... before heading to Junior High (where we got a lot more than "Junior" High....we got RIPPED ass HiiiiiighAsAMufukka. I bought a cassette tape out of the back of a Cadillac that summer in the parking lot of Tennyson High School. Some local rap dude. Homie wasn't all that tall, tho. (He was Too $hort, actually.) ;-O You can't replicate times like those if you had a thousand lifetimes to try. It was what it was, and what it was was BAD ASS! (Except for the Space Shuttle blowing up that year. THAT kinda sucked)
Always fun watching a reactor doing head bobbing to thrash metal song. This and Orion my favorite songs. This for all out thrash. Orion for the great change ups and guitar interlude.
Still waiting for" leper Messiah" (from this album) One of Cliff's best bass lines. And (arguably) the top song on the album

Live version in Seattle '89 is nuts!
Reference to Battery street in San Francisco where clubs were where they used to play. Family refers to the metal crowd that used to go to the clubs.
Battery was a club in LA in the early 80s, simple as that.
You have to do a reaction to the live version of this from Seattle 89. It will blow you away!
Had to see you do Battery. THIS song, right here, is the very definition of thrash metal. If you've heard THIS SONG, you KNOW what thrash metal is all about. It's that simple.
It’s about Battery Street in San Francisco where the rules the thrash scene at the conception of the band.
Battery is actually a reference to a heavy metal club that they would play at, the old waldorf, on battery street
Yes its about the metallica family.
This song was on rockband on it made me cry trying to play it lol
Never ending potency! - I wish I had such a battery. ;-)
I scrolled down some but didn't see anyone menui9n it. BATTERY was a street they lived on in San Francisco l, and IIRC. There was also a club there that they played and it is about the band and their fans at the time.
When METALLICA.....was the METAL GODS....l love this song is incredible.
So glad your reacting to Master Of Puppets always been my favourite album!
Voted best metal album of all time in the polls. Legendary song, album and band. Kicks ass live.
Yesterday ( November 18th) was Kirk Hammett’s Birthday turning 60 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. “Disposable Heroes” and “Damage Inc.” will throw you into another stratosphere ( do Disposable Heroes lyric version bc the lyrics are so important and heavy). Battery is a homage to the fans but also a homage to Battery Street in San Fran. where Metallica started playing in a club
I remember having this song on my old PS3 like around the time the PS3 first came out. My older brother had a lot of music on there.
"The Thing That Should Not be" and "Orion" are my favorites off this album.

The WHOLE ALBUM IS PERFECT
Disposable Hero's is another bad ass song by METALLICA!!!
Battery is a street in the San Francisco Bay area. The song is an ode to that and the energy of those early Metallica club shows.
One of the best intros to a metal song IMO
For us that grew up in the 80’s, this album is really just one big song………
this song is an homage/tribute to old waldorf located at 444 battery street in downtown san francsico which was a big player for the thrash metal scene in the early days of thrash. hence the name of the song "battery". "cannot kill the family, battery is found in me" is a statement that while society at large doesn't/didn't understand the scene, those within it (i.e. "the family") will fiercely defend it as a show of solidarity against the glam scene that was popular in the Los Angeles area.
Metallica lived on Battery Street during the making of this album, so technically this song is about how everything culminated while they were there.
Battery Seattle 89, what an energy !
It's a mix dude. Battery street is where metallers hung out in the 80s, but also a 'battery' of metal headbanging from the shows. Basically an anthem for those who felt alone in the 80s and to show we are all together and banging to metal
Ya 🤘Puppets Album was Just PURE RIFF AMMUNITION!!!
Should react to the LIVE Seattle concert version of Battery too...
If you watch this song live in Seattle in 89 it will change your life
Battery was the street name of a local hangout for them to play there music;) Just in case no one has mentioned it. I think you are awesome BTW
Best start of an album ever......and it is only the start! Whats following is even better!!!!
I can see the energizer battery rabbit head banging to this in a commercial!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Battery is in reference to Assault and Battery. The way the lyrics are is that it is pure energy and power. They also added Can't kill the family 👪 because they don't want to encourage domestic abuse, obviously, that's not the intent of the song. You'd want to protect your family. Me personally, I find it a get workout and training exercise song that will boost your energy more so than any energy drink or chocolate/coffee.
Can't wait until you get to Disposable Heroes.
My favourite one from this album is Battery; and Master of Puppets; and The thing That Should Not Be; and Welcome Home - Sanitarium; and Leper Messiah; and Disposable Heroes; and Orion; and Damage Inc. And Orion once more 🙂
🤘hammer come a crushin, power house of energy🤘.
This was their peak album
Battery is also a military term, a cluster of artillery units. That's how I interpret some of the lyrics. Which is why this is great art, as different folks can interpret it different ways. Thanks!
Metallicas best album for sure! 🤘🤘
That song is about the relationship between the fans and the band. The battery is the energy derived from the maniacal crowd, the mosh pit swirling, the fans singing along, it all provides the steam for the bands engine to roar
Your battery joke is AWESOME😆
You should seriously consider going to one of their live shows. You won‘t regret it!
Great choice! Every song on this album is good. Personally, Disposable Heroes, Master Of Puppets, and Sanitarium. Sooner or later, I will talk someone into reacting to Anthrax.
Disposable Heroes ( because it’s hardly mentioned but should be)
Idk why but when anyone ask me for a battery this song triggers lol
You were pretty spot on with it being the fans. In a way that’s true. It’s in homage to Battery street in San Francisco (where they’re from and where they started out) which is a street that was FULL of bars and clubs where bands would play gigs at and where Metallica started out at too. It’s them essentially saying even with them gaining more fame and playing some slightly bigger shows now, the fame can never take away where they came from and their beginnings and they’ll never forget those early days where their fans supported them when they were nobodies, back on Battery Street. But it’s also as you said earlier it’s the energy between the band and the fans as well. So you pretty much nailed the meanings right away. Awesome
